Aspettando Dissonanze 10, abbiamo intervistato Marco Passarani, probabilmente il dj e producer italiano più rispettato all’estero per i suoi lavori e la sua dedizione più totale nei confronti della musica elettronica in generale. Artista sempre pronto a sfidare se stesso, scopritore di nuovi talenti, ma soprattutto innamorato follemente del proprio lavoro.
Ciao Marco come stai? Emozionato per il grande festival?
Tutto bene, grazie.
Essendo il mio 3° Dissonanze, se non sbaglio, dire emozionato forse è esagerato, più che altro sono contento di partecipare al decimo compleanno! Penso sia un bellissimo rendez-vous prima dell’estate, una finestra importante per cercare di capire e di far conoscere cosa accade nel panorama elettronico europeo. Dissonanze è stato ed è probabilmente uno degli appuntamenti più importanti tra quelli ai quali ho partecipato in Italia.
Pur essendo molto apprezzato qui in Italia, all’estero risulti quasi venerato per i tuoi lavori. Sai dirci il perché?
Non mi sento venerato fuori dal mio paese, ma semplicemente rispettato. Ho iniziato contribuendo seppur marginalmente, all’età di 17 anni, allo storico programma radiofonico condotto da Luca Cucchetti dal nome Centro Suono Rave. Da li mi sono sempre concentrato esclusivamente sulla musica e nel ‘93 ho aperto la prima label con Andrea Benedetti, occupandomi quindi sempre di produzione e parallelamente di importazione e distribuzione di altre piattaforme affini. Organizzare eventi per poi parteciparvi non è stato mai mia intenzione, sarebbero stati troppi gli aspetti non musicali che avrei dovuto curare per promuovere eventi. Diciamo che l’ho fatto, ma troppo poco per creare una forte base di supporto locale. Basarsi esclusivamente sulla creazione di musica era un argomento fantascientifico in Italia dove c’era molto meno mercato. Ed è proprio per questo che il mio lavoro è stato riconosciuto fuori ancor prima che nel mio paese.
Per quale motivo allora non hai deciso di trasferirti all’estero, non so magari Londra o Berlino, come hanno fatto tanti altri tuoi “colleghi”?
Sono tanti i motivi, ma su tutto metterei alcuni problemi personali che ho dovuto affrontare intorno ai 22 anni e poi un infinito orgoglio che mi ha sempre suggerito di fare quello che era nei miei pensieri proprio qui, a casa mia. Il mio senso di appartenenza a questo luogo è molto forte, anche se ultimamente vivo un po’ da straniero in patria.
Hai suonato in 5 continenti diversi, nei locali più importanti del mondo… WOW!
Ebbene si. Questo non vuol dire però che sia ormai “arrivato”. Non ho fatto nient’altro che portare in giro il mio discorso musicale ovunque ci siano persone che trovano il mio lavoro interessante. Fortunatamente queste persone mi supportano chiamandomi a suonare, e io ricambio continuando il mio percorso produttivo.
Se ti dico… Redbull?
Sono stato coinvolto dalla Redbull Music Academy nel 2004 quando si svolse proprio qui a Roma. Lo scopo dell’accademia è quello di affiancare ad artisti di livello mondiale a nuovi nomi e personaggi interessanti provenienti da ogni angolo del pianeta. L’accademia si sposta ogni anno in una diversa città ed è proprio per questo che io e il mio collega amico Mario Pierro (Raiders of the lost ARP e metà dei Jolly Music / Mat101) siamo stati coinvolti come team locale proprio in quell’anno. Andò tutto molto bene e continuai così ad essere parte della squadra. E’ forse la cosa più bella e refreshing che mi sia capitata. E’ una cosa diversa dalla carriera di produttore, è una sfida di confronto e un’occasione di scambio con ragazzi provenienti da tutto il mondo. Un’esperienza a distanza di 6 anni ancora eccezionale ed emozionante come la prima volta. Inoltre contribuisco alla RedbullMusicAcademy Radio prima con il programma Dimensione Jack insieme a Francisco e Mario Pierro, ora con dei set mixati di tanto in tanto. Partecipo a diversi workshop in giro per l’Italia e per il mondo. Insomma un’esperienza totalizzante che mi ha aiutato a crescere e ad espandere il mio knowledge musicale e tecnico, senza trascurare l’aspetto della crescita umana grazie proprio a quel confronto con tantissimi caratteri e culture diverse. Insomma esperienza indimenticabile che continuerò a vivere intensamente fino a quando me ne sarà data la possibilità.
Artisti che ti hanno impressionato quest’anno all’accademia?
Mi sono letteralmente innamorato di 00Genesis e anche se già lo conoscevo mi ha nuovamente impressionato Ad Bourke che oltretutto è italiano.
Nuove produzioni in arrivo?
E’ in uscita un ep sulla tedesca “Running Back”. E’ un lavoro diviso in due parti. La prima uscirà prima dell’estate e la seconda parte subito dopo l’estate. Ho un altro ep pronto, realizzato insieme ad un ragazzo venezuelano di nome Montez, per un’altra importante etichetta tedesca di cui però ancora non posso proprio rivelarvi il nome… Spero fili tutto liscio!
Inoltre continuo a lavorare ad un progetto “segreto” insieme ad un’altro ragazzo. Sono usciti i primi due ep e sono andati veramente una bomba. E’ in arrivo il terzo e a Novembre uscirà finalmente l’album, già tutto pronto!
Troppi segreti Marco, troppi segreti!
Il fatto non è di tenere i segreti, è che oggi tutti dicono tutto, tutti sanno tutto… insomma parlano in troppi. Quindi preferisco fare annunci a cose fatte. Diciamo che con te ho fatto il massimo dell’anteprima che la mia filosofia consente.
Approposito delle tue produzioni. Tu che rappresenti diciamo la “Old School”, come ti comporti vedendo il mondo del digitale che fa da padrone? Utilizzi ancora apparecchiature analogiche per le tue produzioni?
Penso sia un inevitabile progresso della tecnologia. Siamo ormai nell’era del digitale. Il computer è ormai in grado di lavorare in maniera impressionante. Esistono plug-in in grado di generare effetti / suoni virtualmente molto vicini a quelli analogici. Però alla fine è una questione di gusti. Continuo a ritenere che il risultato migliore sia quello di prendere il meglio da entrambe le cose.
In che direzione secondo te sta viaggiando il nuovo sound? Quali saranno le sonorità del prossimo futuro?
In realtà io penso che un vero e proprio nuovo sound non ci sarà. Non c’è molto da inventarsi, esiste più o meno già tutto. Si parla semmai di stili, e “mischioni” di cose già fatte. Il mercato poi la fa da padrone. Ci sono dei generi musicali che ogni tanto prendono il sopravvento e poi vanno in calo. E sinceramente non so quale sarà il prossimo che prenderà il sopravvento.
Si avverte però che la gente è stufa di ascoltare sempre le stesse cose. C’è una grandissima scelta grazie ad internet (download legali e illegali, blog, social network) ed è per questo la gente comincia a diversificare i propri ascolti. Ho notato questa cosa ancora di più all’ascolto dei brani di presentazione dei ragazzi che hanno partecipato all’Academy di RedBull quest’anno: erano tutti diversi l’uno dall’altro, e questo è affascinante.
Per concludere è tutto super sfaccettato e di conseguenza non ci sarà una novità vera e propria. Il futuro lo identifico in un miscuglio…

Waiting for Dissonanze 10, I interviewed Marco Passarani, probably abroad the most respected Italian DJ and producer for his work and his utter devotion to electronic music in general. Artist always ready to challenge himself, new talent scout, especially madly in love with his job.
Hi Marco, How are you? Are you enthusiast for the big Festival?
I’m well, thanks. Being my 3rd Dissonanze, if I’m not wrong, probably being enthusiast it’s a bit of an exaggeration, although I’m happy to perform at it’s 10th Anivversary! I think it’s a great rendezvous before summer, a good way to expose yourself and to know what’s going on in the european electronic music scene. Dissonanze it was, and probably still is, one of the most important festivals in which I performed in Italy.
Although you’re well appreciated here in Italy, outside Italy you seem to be almost worshipped for your works. Can you tell us how?
I don’t really feel worshipped outside my country, I just simply feel respected. I’ve started my musical career by contributing, even though in a marginal way when I was 17, with Luca Cucchetti in his radio program called Centro Suono Rave. From there on I’ve always concentrated myself exclusively on music, so in ’93 I’ve opened my first label with Andrea Benedetti, where I worked always on producing and aside that on distribution and importation of others similar platforms. I never wanted to organize events to participate, there would have been too many non-musical aspects that I should have thought about to promote them. I still did it, but not enough to create a base for the local support. I think basing your own career only in composing music was a sci-fi concept in Italy for the very low market demand of music and that’s probably why my work has been recognized much earlier outside my country.
So why haven’t you decided yet to move yourself out of italy, maybe in London or Berlin, as many of your “collegues” did?
There are lot of reasons why, but over all I would say for some personal problems that I had to go through when i was 22. On the other hand I’ve an infinite sense of proudness tha made me push to do what I had in mind here in Italy, where I live. My sense of belonging here is extremely strong, even though in these last period I live almost as a foreigner in its own home-land.
You’ve played in 5 different continents, but also in the most important stages of the world….WOW!
That’s right. Although that doesn’t mean that my job is done. I’ve just brought around my musical ideas wherever people appreciated it. Fortunately everybody supports me by calling me to play and i thank’em back by continuing my production process.
If i say…Red Bull?
I’ve been involved with the Red Bull Music Academy in 2004 when it happened here in Rome. The aim of the academy is to welcome international artists with new and interesting recruits coming from all over the world. The academy is moved every year in a different city and this is why me and my friend Mario Pierro (Raiders of the lost ARP and half of the Jolly music / Mat101) have been involved as a local team exactly on that year in Rome. That was probably the most refreshing and beautiful thing that I ever did. It’s something different from been a producer, it’s a new challenge and an opportunity for comparison with boys from around the world.
Experience at 6 years still outstanding and exciting as the first time. Also contributes to Radio RedbullMusicAcademy first with the program size Francisco with Jack and Mario Pierro, now mixed with the set from time to time. Participate in various workshops in Italy and around the world. So all-encompassing experience that helped me to grow and expand my musical knowledge and technology, without neglecting the human growth thanks to its comparison with that many characters and cultures. So unforgettable experience that I will continue to live intensely up when I will be given the opportunity.
Some artist that you liked this year to the academy?
I literally fell in love with 00Genesis and although I already knew him again impressed Ad Bourke which moreover is Italian.
New productions coming?
It is coming out an EP on the German “Running Back”. It ‘s a work divided into two parts. The first will be out before summer and the second part after the summer. I have another ep ready made with a boy named Venezuelan Montez, for another major label in German but still I just can not reveal the name wire smoothly …I hope! Also continue to work on a project “secret” with another boy. Came the first two eps and have been really a bomb. It ‘coming third in November and finally released the album, everything ready!
Mark too many secrets, too many secrets!
The fact is not to keep secrets, is that now everyone is saying everything, everyone knows everything… speak too many words. So I prefer to do things without ads. Let’s say I did my best with you my philosophy that allows the preview.
By the way of your productions. You say that it represents the “Old School”, you act like seeing the world of digital is king? Still using analog equipment for your productions?
I think it’s inevitable progress of technology. We are now in the digital age. The computer is now capable of working in an impressive manner. There are plug-in can generate effects / sounds virtually very close to analog. But the end is a matter of taste. I still believe that the best result is to take the best from both.
In what direction do you think the new sound is traveling? What will be the sound of the future?
Actually I think a real new sound will not be. Not much to invent, there is more or less everything. We speak rather of styles, and “mischioni” of things already done. The market then is the master. There are musical genres that sometimes take over and then they go down. And frankly I do not know what will be the next to take over. It warns that people are tired of hearing the same things. There is a great choice thanks to the internet (legal and illegal downloads, blogs, social networks) and this is why people start to diversify their plays. I noticed this thing even more songs to listen to the presentation of young people who attended the Academy of RedBull this year were all different from each other, and this is fascinating.
Finally everything is super-faceted and therefore there will be a real novelty. The future will identify a mixture…
