Gli Octave One sono di nuovo in Italia, ennesimo show in pochi mesi. Sabato saranno al Tunnel di Milano e per questo abbiamo voluto scambiarci due chiacchiere prima del loro show. Dalle origini in Detroit alla loro rinascita in giro per il mondo, dalla loro strutturazione per il Live, alle sensazioni che hanno sul palco di fronte a una folla totalmente impazzita. Un concentrato di energia e di anni di esperienza.
Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti su Soundwall! Dopo pochi mesi di nuovo in Italia. Come è stata l’ultima volta? Parlo del mood, della gente, dei club… Come avete trovato la scena techno italiana?
Già! Abbiamo suonato in Italia parecchie volte ultimamente. L’ultima volta a Bari è stato totalmente incredibile. Il club era strapieno, da muro a muro, era talmente pieno che han dovuto assoldare dei body guards che ci portassero sullo stage, altrimenti non ce l’avremmo mai fatta. La cosa comunque è stata ricompensata perchè il pubblico era intensissimo e totalmente impazzito! Dal momento in cui abbiamo emesso la prima nota le uniche cose che si vedevano erano mani al cielo e gente urlante. Veramente, veramente intenso.
Siete nella scena da vent’anni, ma solo da poco più di 10 andate in giro per il mondo, come mai?
Allora, all’inizio della nostra carriera non volevamo far altro che creare musica. Poi abbiamo avviato la nostre label (430 West e Direct Beat) pensando che fosse nell’interesse degli artisti che lavoravano per noi poter lavorare in una label alla quale potevamo dedicare molto tempo, concentrandoci sul loro sviluppo e sulle loro carriere. Così tra produrre per noi e per altri, concentrarci sulle carriere dei nostri artisti… non c’era assolutamente tempo per nessuna esibizione.
Quando avete lasciato Detroit come avete trovato il mondo della techno? Ispirevole? Pronto per la vostra musica?
Per noi è stata come una nuova “fonte di luce” o qualcosa di simile introdurre le nostre radici detroitiane in un nuovo ambiente. Onestamente è stato ed è ancora molto ispirante, ora vediamo le cose con una visuale molto più globale. La cosa ridicola è che questo passo avremmo dovuto farlo molti anni fa! Ma la musica che facciamo è in noi stessi, così pensiamo che ci piacciamo lo stesso come Octave One, siamo solo più felici di quello che adesso ci circonda.
Da “I Believe”, passando per “Black Water” e “Revisited: Here, There, and Beyond “, fino ad oggi. Come è cambiato il vostro suono negli anni?
Se guardiamo indietro, a partire da “I Believe” fino ad arrivare a oggi possiamo dire che il nostro sound è maturato molto. Abbiamo ancora un certo tipo di livello su cui ci piace esprimerci, ma ci siamo raffinati, definendo meglio il prodotto finale.
Il vostro live set può essere definito come “una visione moderna del suono di Detroit”. Cosa ne pensate?
Wow, sentirci dire che siamo una “visione moderna del vero suono di Detroit” è ancora abbastanza travolgente, anche se abbiamo avuto molto a che fare con questo statement in passato. E’ abbastanza divertente sentircelo dire perchè pensando a quando abbiamo cominciato a produrre il nostro suono non era considerato proprio detroitiano, rispetto per esempio a quello dei nostri coetanei. Non fraintendeteci, non è che non piacesse, solo che non si aveva la sensazione che fosse vero suono techno di Detroit. Ad ogni modo pensiamo che negli anni contribuendo alla scena abbiamo lentamente cominciato ad influenzarla, diventando parte delle basi del suo suono. Così come detto, ad un certo punto siamo diventati una “visione moderna del vero suono di Detroit”.
Se siete una visione moderna della techno di Detroit sicuramente potete dirci quale sarà il futuro della techno, non è vero? Che posto occuperà la techno in futuro? Sto palrando di tendenze, stili, come tutta quella new disco, deep house che sta influenzando l’elettronica in questi tempi. Tornerà la vera techno?
Allora, quando la gente ci chiede quale sarà il futuro di questa musica solitamente noi facciamo notare quello che noi come artisti pensiamo che possa accadere per noi stessi. Nel prossimo futuro abbiamo in programma di lavorare molto più sui vocals e di sviluppare un suono che sia più “musicale” e non proprio solo delle tracce. Questo per noi è come tornare alle nostre radici, tornare al suono che ci piaceva creare. In questo senso possiamo dire con una certa certezza che anche altri artisti la pensano come noi. La musica comunque ha sempre compiuto dei cicli riproponendosi in modi diversi, così i vecchi suoni della dance music indubbiamente ritorneranno sui dancefloor di tutto il mondo. La gente vuole veramente tornare alla vera atmosfera dance e per questo devi lasciare che la musica ti porti a una sorta di euforia dance.
Sul ritorno della vera techno, bè, non ci ha mai lasciato. E’ diventata underground per un po’ di tempo, ma come tutte le cose tornerà al top.
Parliamo della vostra performance. Il vostro Live set è strutturato solo su strumentazione analogica, niente laptop o altre apparecchiature digitali. Come mai questa scelta?
Per noi una struttura hardware era l’unica strada, è così che ci piace lavorare in studio e abbiamo voluto portare la nostra esperienza da studio sul palco. Per qualche tempo abbiamo lavorato con i laptop, ma le nostre performance erano troppo legate ad esso e non c’era abbastanza spazio per essere spontanei, sentimento che dovrebbe essere alla base per tutti quelli che si esibiscono Live. Devi esser bravo ad adattare quello che fai ai vari pubblici, non riprodurre sempre la stessa cosa in ogni posto in cui ti esibisci. Oltre a questo essere incatenati a qualcosa ci fa addormentare.
Un live set è un tipo di performance che conferisce all’artista l’opportunità di esprimere se stesso senza barriere o limiti, preparate qualcosa per il vostro show o lasciate semplicemente che sia l’ipsirazione a fare da se?
Il nostro Live è composto da alcune cose pre-strutturate che possiamo riarrangiare, modificare e mixare al volo. Questo ci permette di fatto di fare quello che vogliamo, dipendentemente dal mood, dalle sensazioni che vogliamo trasmettere alla folla. E’ come se fosse un continuo miglioramento durante le performance, come detto ci annoiamo velocemente e quindi dobbiamo mantenere le cose interessanti, i nostri fan la pensano allo stesso modo, così ci sforziamo di mantenere le cose in movimento anche per loro!
E per i vostri fan italiani? State preparando qualcosa di speciale? Qualcosa di nuovo da mostrare?
Sicuro! Abbiamo appena aggiunto del nuovo materiale dall’inizio dell’anno e quindi abbiamo ancora una maggiore selezione da riarrangiare, modificare e mixare durante il Live. Sarà uno show ancora più energetico quindi…portatevi un’asciugamano!
Palrando di qualcosa di nuovo, avete delle news, progetti imminenti o qualcosa di simile di cui ci potete parlare?
Siamo molto eccitati al fatto che il nostro nuovo progetto “Here, There and Beyond” verrà pubblicato tra poche settimane, poi abbiamo dei singoli di questo progetto con remix di Ken Ishii e Luke Slater. Penso che i fan saranno entusiasti di quello che han fatto. Ho la pelle d’oca solo a pensarci!!! Oltre a questo abbiamo appena messo il tocco ad una vocal release per il futuro che è veramente incredibile! E ultimo, ma non per importanza per tutti quelli che non lo sapessero c’è una free Octave One app per IPhone e Android, e si abbiamo detto gratis… Poi non dite che non vi diamo mai niente. Straordinario.

Octave One are back in Italy, another show in a few month. Saturday they will be at Tunnel, in Milan, and for this reason we wanted to make a chat with them before the show. Form their Detroit roots to their global renaissance, from their Live set up to the sensations they feel on the stage in front of an insane crowd. Energy and experience concentrated in One.
Hi guys, welcome on Soundwall! After a few month you’re back in Italy. How was it last time? I’m talking about the mood, the audience, the clubs… How did you find the Italian techno scene?
Yea, we have been playing in Italy quite a bit lately. We were just recently in Bari which was totally unbelievable. The club was so incredibly packed from wall-to-wall so much so that they had to grab a few body guards to escort us to the stage or we might have never made it on. But it was well worth it because the crowd was intense and truly bananas! From the time we hit the first notes, that’s all you saw was hands in the air and screaming. Truly, truly intense.
You’ve been in the scene from 20 years, but only from 10 or little more you’re performing around the globe. Why this?
Well, in the beginning of our career we really just wanted to do nothing but create music. Then once we started our labels (430 West and Direct Beat) we really thought that it was in the best interest for our artist that we signed to the label that we spent as much time as we could focusing on there development and careers. So between producing for ourselves and others, and focus on the careers of our artist there was absolutely no time for any touring at all.
When you left Detroit how did you find the techno world? Inspirational? Ready for the Octave One Music?
For us there was a new ‘source of light’ sort of speak, because of planting our Detroit roots into a brand new environment. Honestly, it was and has been quite inspirational and we see things a lot more global and rounded. Our biggest joke among ourselves is that we should have made the change years ago! But the music we create is in us as beings so we think we still like Octave One but we’re just happier in our surroundings.
From “I Believe”, passing through “Black Water” and arriving to “Revisited: Here, There, and Beyond”, since nowadays. How did your sound changed in these years?
From the beginning with “I Believe” till today our sound looking back in retrospect has really matured. We still have an edge to how we like to produce but our approach to the finish production makes us lean a lot more into polishing the final product.
Your live set can be defined like a modern view of the real Detroit sound. What do you think about?
Wow, to hear us defined as the “modern view of the real Detroit sound” is still quite overwhelming but we have been hearing that statement a lot lately. It’s a bit funny for us to hear it because we think back on when we first started out producing that our sound among our peers was not really categorized as sounding like the Detroit sound. Don’t get us wrong, they liked it but they didn’t really feel that it was the Detroit techno sound. But we guess over the years that you do so much contributing to the sound of the scene that slowly you start to help influence it as well and it becomes part of the groundwork of the sound. So that being said, we guess to some point we are a “modern view of the real Detroit sound”.
If you are a moder view of the Detroit techno for sure you can tell us what is the future of the techno, isn’t it? What spot will be taken by techno in the future in your opinion? I’m talking about trends and style, like all this new disco, deep house that is influencing all the electronic music in these days. Will the real techno come back?
Well when people ask us about the future of this music we kind of point them pretty much on what we as artist see happening for ourselves. We plan on working a lot more with vocals in the near future as well as working in developing from a track-i-er sound to one that’s a lot more musical. Which is really for us going back to our roots in the sound we like to create. So we’re sure on some level a few artist are thinking along the same lines as well. But music is and always has had a habit of recycling itself in different ways, so the earlier sounds of dance music will undoubtedly make a comeback to the dancefloors around the world. People are really wanting to get back into dancing intensely again and you just need that music to take you to the euphoric state of dance. And on real techno coming back, well it never left it just went underground for a while but like everything it too is rising back to the top.
Let’s talk about your performance. Your live set is made up only by hardware gears, no laptops or other digital stuffs like that. Why this choice?
For us hardware was absolutely the only way to go because that’s what we enjoy working with in the studio and we wanted to just bring our studio experience to the stage. We tried for a brief moment to work with the laptop performance equipment and it seemed to really leave us too tied down to it and didn’t leave us enough room to be spontaneous, which is one of the things we really feel a person performing live should be able to do. You need to be able to adopt what you do to many audiences and it not being the exact same everyplace you perform your show and besides we bore easily and being chained down puts us to sleep.
A live set is something that give to the artists the opportunity to express themselves without any boundaries or limit, do you prepare something for your performance or just let your inspiration doing by itself?
Our live shows primarily have a small bit of programming to them that we can rearrange, edit and mix on the fly which enables us to do just about anything we want to do to it depending on our mood and the feeling that we want to convey to our audience. So there is quite a bit of improv going on when we perform and again, we get bored quickly so we have to keep things interesting for us and we assume our fans are the same way so we strive to keep things moving for them as well!
And for your Italian fan? Are you preparing something special? Something new to show?
Yes, of course! We actually added some new material at the first of the year so we would have even a bigger selection of our material to rearrange, edit and mix live. So it will be an even more energetic show, so bring a towel.
Talking about something new, have you got some news, some incoming project or similar that you can tell us about?
We’re really excited that our “Here, There and Beyond” project will be releasing in a few weeks and we have the following single from project with remixed works for Ken Ishii and Luke Slater. We think the fans are gonna be thrilled by what they’ve done! Getting goosebumps just thinking of it !!! And we’ve just put the finishing touches on a vocal release that we have for the future which is truly amazing! And last but not least for those who don’t know there is the new free Octave One app for iPhones and Androids, and yes we did say free so don’t say we never gave ya nothing!!! Mad Respect!
