Il nome di un duo, il nome di un’etichetta discografica, la fiducia rivolta ad un’intera generazione. Gli Hold Youth, all’anagrafe Seuil e Le Loup, francesi di Parigi, si potrebbero presentare così. Nulla di nuovo si potrebbe pensare, visto che di duo in commercio ce ne sono sempre di più (ed il trend è pure in crescita), e nemmeno per quanto riguarda l’argomento “etichetta discografica”, già. Ma oltre al fatto che gli Hold Youth fanno davvero dell’ottima musica, un mix di house e deep old-school splendidamente condite (mica come quall’house commerciale che oggi si ascolta e domani chissà), c’è da dire che per loro la musica rappresenta ben di più di quello che molti musicisti e pubblico intendono. La musica è la quint’essenza del loro gruppo, trasformandosi nel mezzo per trascendere le barriere delle ovvietà commerciali del presente. Insomma, il mezzo perfetto per coniugare passato e futuro, il futurismo all’old-school, vecchi e giovani. In questo ponte ideale usato per connettere epoche così diverse e distorte, il loro fine sono i giovani. E proprio ai giovani si rivolgono: non come insegnanti o severi maestri, ma come compagni, amici, consci perfettamente che il loro produrre musica non si limita allo sballo nella serata nei club, no… rappresenta le gioie e le emozioni di un’intera generazione. Rappresenta le preoccupazioni di quelle persone che incarnano ancora quei vecchi stereotipi che credono che la musica elettronica sia sempre accompagnata alla droga ed all’alcool, e non sia fenomeno culturale, gli Hold Youth se ne fanno carico, consci che quello stesso pubblico è indirettamente affidato a loro. Musica e passione si fondono, e quello che ne esce non può che essere di altissimo livello. Il formato usato? Non poteva che essere il vinile, rispolverato come unico formato nella loro etichetta nonchè nei loro live! Il passato che ritorna.
Le sonorità che proponete sono strettamente old-school. Cosa vi piace di più di quei suoni rispetto all’house classic?
Per noi, l’old school non è tanto uno stile ma più un modo di fare house! La maggior parte dei classici sono stati prodotti solo con una rhythm box ed un campionatore, in genere sono brani semplici che trascendono il tempo. Oggi, con le nuove tecnologie e lo sviluppo digitale, è più facile produrre, ognuno ha il proprio computer. Ovviamente, questo ha portato ad una perdita di qualità così la musica è diventata usa e getta. Noi cerchiamo di mantenere il vecchio modo di fare musica, ma con l’aggiunta di alcuni nuovi suoni moderni. E’ il mix di vecchio e nuovo che vogliamo sviluppare!
Come nasce il progetto Hold Youth? Vi conoscevate anche da prima di iniziare a suonare assieme?
Ci siamo incontrati a Parigi, durante una festa quando suonavamo insieme. Ci siamo subito resi conto che avevano molto in comune e che stavamo condividendo la stessa visione della musica. Così è stato naturale iniziare questo progetto.
Trovo molto interessante il nome che vi siete scelti: come mai questo nome e da cosa nasce?
E’ stata un’idea di Seuil, ha avuto questo nome nella sua mente per molto tempo: si adattava perfettamente con il nostro progetto. La combinazione di vecchi e giovani, vecchia scuola e futurismo, lui e me, la nostra musica… tutto corrispondeva perfettamente! Non c’è niente di più importante che l’energia e l’ingenuità giovanile nella nostra musica, e questo noi lo stiamo solo evolvendo. Allora, che cosa sarebbe stato di più naturale che scegliere “hold youth” come nome?
Diteci di più su Hold Youth come duo…
Beh, come duo non ci prepariamo i nostri set in anticipo, ma cerchiamo sempre di decidere un orientamento di volta in volta, a seconda della festa e del luogo. Forse suoniamo più house o più techno o dub o weird, ma sempre molto deep. Non si sa mai esattamente cosa si suonerà alla fine, ci limitiamo solo a parlare un pò prima della festa ed a fare la selezione dei vinili. Al momento siamo ospiti come resident al Rex Club di Parigi: è un ottimo modo per mostrare le nostre sonorità. Invitiamo solo un ospite ad unirsi a noi in ogni serata in modo da poter davvero apprezzare l’artista e la sua musica. Finora abbiamo avuto artisti del calibro di Kyle Hall, Marc Schneider, Cezar e il prossimo 17 gennaio siamo molto entusiasti di presentare il nuovo live di Audio Werner. Finora solo sentito una volta Panorama Bar di Berlino!
Come è il lavoro in coppia? Quali sono i vantaggi rispetto a lavorare da solo (e quali i difetti, se ce ne sono)?
E’ davvero bello lavorare con qualcuno che ti apprezza. Per esempio, quando sei bloccato su di una traccia, gli altri portano nuove idee o semplicemente ti suggeriscono un altro approccio e questo dà un risultato molto interessante! C’è una reale sinergia tra di noi… Ci piace lavorare in studio insieme, ma possiamo anche finire alcuni progetti separatamente, se necessario.
Hold Youth è anche il nome della vostra etichetta. Come è nato questo progetto, che tipo di musica cercate di produrre e quanto spazio dedicate ai giovani musicisti?
Il progetto è nato naturalmente, nello stesso periodo in cui abbiamo deciso di produrre insieme. All’inizio, abbiamo pensato di rilasciare solo le nostre produzioni, poi l’etichetta si è espansa! Sarebbe stato davvero difficile avere un calendario completo solo con la nostra musica, visti i nostri impegni con i nostri rispettivi progetti. Non abbiamo uno stile specifico, ci sono più sonorità, un mi tra la deep e bizarre, passando per l’house, la techno, ma anche l’hip hop con le radici in Detroit o Chicago, ma anche gli europei. I giovani artisti sono davvero importanti per noi tanto che abbiamo già rilasciato due dei nostri che sosteniamo. Sono amici di Parigi: Douze e S3A. Accanto ai giovani, noi rilasceremo artisti rispettati e ben noti come Rick Wade, Ark o Jordan Fields, e questo è anche molto importante per noi.
Siete francesi, di Parigi precisamente. Com’è musicalmente parlando la città? Che spazio è lasciato ai giovani e come vedete le prospettive per un giovane che si cimenta nel mondo dell’elettronica restando a Parigi?
Bhe io (Seuil) in realtà provengono da Réunion nell’Oceano Indiano vicino al Madagascar. Musicalmente ho iniziato imparando il pianoforte e le percussioni attraverso il Maloya – è sia una forma di musica che di canto e danza nativo per l’isola. Creato da schiavi di origine malgascia e africani nelle piantagioni di zucchero, è mescolato con rock, reggae e jazz, ispirando poesia e slam. Per quanto riguarda la situazione a Parigi, la città è un luogo ideale per la produzione di musica, è davvero stimolante, ma io non credo che tutte le scene musicali siano davvero collegate. Ho appena scoperto che questo Woodkid, ragazzo che produce un tipo incredibile di musica ibrida, è di Parigi: mi piacerebbe incontrare questo ragazzo per condividere idee… Solitamente, sono solito collaborare con i dOP in studio qui a Parigi, e la porta dello studio successivo, Noze, dalla Circus Company stanno lavorando al loro nuovo album. Quindi di sicuro è bello quando si ha un posto dove è possibile creare quello che vuoi, ma non c’è spazio offerto dallo Stato o dedicato ai giovani che vogliono iniziare. Ho sentito parlare di alcune sessioni di lezioni di Ableton e cose di questo tipo, ma la musica elettronica non è incorporato in opportunità per gli studenti come si può vedere a Detroit, per esempio. Qui la gente imparare di più da sola e questo a volte richiede maggior tempo. A parigi, il lato “festaiolo” è più sviluppato: dai club di consueto, ai magazzini in periferia e afterparties su barche lungo la Senna. L’aumento di clubbers non cessa mai. Le cose si stanno muovendo con l’aiuto di promoters come Sundae e Concrete: possiamo sentire che vi è una domanda nuova e questo è davvero incoraggiante.
Avete da sempre prediletto il formato del vinile per quanto riguarda le vostre produzioni. Credete che sia un formato “immortale” per quanto riguarda il mondo dell’house e della club culture in generale o è anch’esso destinato a scomparire?
E’ stata una nostra decisione quella di rilasciare solo su vinile perché costa, quindi le etichette in vinile hanno molte difficoltà a fare soldi. Poi, c’è la parte importante del vinile – il suono. Non per entrare in un dibattito tra analogico e digitale, ma pensiamo che la nostra musica si adatta perfettamente a questo formato, ed è importante avere l’oggetto fisico che rimarrà nel tempo, qualcosa che si può toccare. Abbiamo paura che questo stia per scomparire, ma spero che di amanti del vinile ne rimarranno sempre.
Cosa vi ispira nelle vostre produzioni? C’è qualche artista in particolare che a cui vi ispirate (e con cui vorreste collaborare)?
Ci sono tante cose che ci ispirano. Prima di tutti i nostri amici, ma anche il posto in cui viviamo, la nostra città: Parigi! Musicalmente, direi J Dilla, Andrés, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Daniel Bell e Ricardo Villalobos per il tocco moderno ed europeo. E’ la combinazione di questi due universi che siamo interessati a creare. Lavorare con Rick Wade è stato perfetto per i Hold Youth, lui è stato una grande ispirazione per noi ed è un vero onore aver avuto la sua EP Night Addiction sull’etichetta. Egli rappresenta il vero lato old-skool delle cose che ci piacciono.

The name of a duo, the name of a record label, the trust aimed at an entire generation. Seuil and Le Loup, aka the Hold Youth, two Frenchmen from Paris, could be presented in this way. Nothing of new you might think, seen that the duo format in music are more and more (and the trend is also growing), and even with regard to the topic “label” but beyond the fact that they make great music, a mix of deep house and old-school, not like the commercial one, it must be said that for them the music is much more than what many musicians and audience understand. The music is the quintessence of their group and becoming the means for transcending the barriers of obviousness in the music. The perfect way to combine past and future, futurism and Old-school, old and young. In this ideal bridge used to connect so many different and distorted years, their purpose are the young. They are directed to young, not as teachers, but as companions, friends, knowing that the music they produce is not limited to the high in the evening in the club but it is the joy and the excitement of an entire generation. Represents the concerns of those people who still embody those old stereopiti who believe that electronic music is always accompanied to drugs and alcohol, and is not a cultural phenomenon… the Hold Youth not take charge, knowing that the same audience is indirectly assigned to them. Music and passion come together, and what comes out can only be of the highest level. The format used? It could not be vinyl, dusted off as the only format in their label as well as in their live! The past returns.
The sounds that you propose are strictly old-school. What do you like about those sounds compared to the classic house vibes?
For us, old school is not so much a style more a way of making house! Most of the classics have been produced just with a rhythm box and a sampler, generally they are simple tracks that transcend time. Today, with new technologies and digital development, it’s easier to produce, everybody has his own computer. Obviously, this had led to a loss of quality and music has become disposable. We try to keep the old school way of making music but adding some new modern sounds. It’s the mix of old and new that we want to develop!
How did the project hold youth start? Did you know each other before you start playing together?
We met in Paris, during a party when we were playing together. We soon realized we had a lot in common and that we were sharing the same vision of music. So it was natural to make this project together!
I find it very interesting your name: why this name and how it is born?
It was Seuil’s idea, he had this name in his mind for a long time and it matched perfectly with our project. The combination of old and young, old school and futuristic, him and me, our music… all was matching! There is nothing more important than the youthful energy and naivety in our music, that we are evolving. So, what more natural than to choose “Hold Youth” as a name?
Tell us more about Hold Youth as a dj duo…
Well, as a duo we don’t prepare our sets beforehand but try to decide on an orientation each time, depending on the party and the place. Maybe we’ll play more housey or more techno or dub or weird, but always deep. You never know exactly what we’ll play in the end; we just talk before the party and each make our vinyl selection. We currently host the Hold Youth residency at Rex Club in Paris which is a great way to show our vibe. We invite one guest only to join us at each party so that we can really appreciate the artist and their music. So far we’ve had artists like Kyle Hall, Marc Schneider, Cezar… and next up on 17th January we’re very excited to present the new live of Audio Werner. So far only heard once at Panorama Bar Berlin!
How is the work in pairs? What are the advantages compared to working alone (and what flaws, if there are any)?
It is really nice to work with someone you appreciate. For instance, when one stalls on a track, the other is going to bring new ideas or another approach and this gives a very interesting result! There is a real synergy between us. We love to work in the studio together, but can we can also finish some projects separately if it is necessary.
Hold Youth is also the name of your label. How did this project and what kind of music you are looking to produce and how much space dedicated to young musicians?
The project came naturally, at the same time when we decided to produce together. At the beginning, we thought to release just our productions and then the label expanded! It would have been really hard to have a full timetable only with our music, as we are already very busy with our respective projects. We have not so much a specific style, more a vibe, between deep and bizarre, through house, techno as hip hop with roots from Detroit or Chicago but also Europeans! Young artists are really important for us and we have already released music from two of the ones we support! They are close friends from Paris: Douze and S3A. Alongside the young ones, we will release music from respected and well-known artists such as Rick Wade, Ark or Jordan Fields and this is also really important for us!
You’re French, from Paris precisely. How is musically the city? How many space is dedicated to the young and what are for you the prospects for a young who engages in the electronics?
So i (Seuil) actually come from Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar. Musically there i learnt the piano and percussion through the Maloya – it’s both a form of music, song and dance native to the island. Created by the slaves of Malagasy and African origin in the sugar plantations, it’s mixed with rock, reggae and jazz, and inspires poetry and slam. In terms of the situation in Paris, the city is a great place to produce music, it’s really inspiring, but I don’t feel that all the music scenes are really connected. I just discovered that this guy Woodkid who produces an amazing kind of hybrid music is from Paris, I would love to meet this guy to share ideas. I use to work with dOP in the studio here in Paris, and the studio next door, Noze from Circus Company is working on their new album. So for sure it’s great when you have a place where you can create what you want to, but there is no space offered by the state or dedicated to young people who want to get into it. I heard about some Ableton workshop sessions lessons and stuff like this, but electronic music is not incorporated into student opportunities as we can see in Detroit for example. Here people learn more from themselves so it can take longer sometimes. The “party” side is more developed, from the usual clubs, to warehouses in the suburbs and afterparties on boats along the Seine, the increase of new clubbers never ceases. Things are moving with the help of promoters like Sundae and Concrete, we can feel there is a new demand and it is really encouraging!
Regarding to your productions, you have always preferred the vinyl format. do you believe that it is an “immortal” format as far as the world of house and club culture in general, or is designed to disap?
It’s a decision to only release on vinyl because it costs a price, and many vinyl labels find it hard to make money. Then, there is the important side of vinyl – sound. Not to get into a debate between analogue and digital, but we think our music is perfectly adapted to this format and it is important to have the physical object that will remain through the time, something you can touch. We are afraid this is going to vanish but hopefully there will be always be vinyl-lovers.
What inspires you in your productions? Is there any artist, in particular, that inspired you (and which you would like collaborate with)?
There are so many things inspiring us. First of all our friends, but also where we live, our city Paris! Musically, I would say J Dilla, Andrés, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Daniel Bell and Ricardo Villalobos for the modern and European touch! It’s the combination of these two universes that we are interested in creating. Working with Rick Wade was perfect for Hold Youth, he’s been a big inspiration to us and it’s a real honour to have his new EP Night Addiction on the label. He represents the real old skool side of things that we like.
