Luca Saporito e Anthony Middleton sono il duo anglo italiano dietro al progetto Audiofly: è stato un incontro fortuito, nel 2002 a far conoscere i due djs che, già inseriti nella scena musicale di Londra, uniscono i loro talenti creando da subito una musica house potente, originale e sperimentale apprezzata tanto dai clubs (Space Ibiza, Fabric, Warung), quanto dalla stampa di settore (DJ Mag). Nel 2006 la creatività di Luca e Anthony partorisce Flying Circus, ormai riconosciuto come uno degli eventi più riusciti e apprezzati della scena dance mondiale. Tante le collaborazioni avviate negli anni fino alla pubblicazione nel 2011 del loro primo disco, Follow My Liebe, per la Get Physical, con sonorità che passano dal downtempo e ambient fino alla house più dritta ed elettronica. Il 12 giugno esce Kolors, per la loro etichetta Supernature: una compilation a cui hanno preso parte quindici artisti e che esplora attraverso la musica un vasto spettro di colori. Ma lasciamo che siano loro stessi a raccontarcelo.
Ciao Luca, ciao Anthony, siete un duo anglo-italiano con sede a Barcellona ed in stretto contatto con la scena musicale di Berlino. Quanto beneficia il vostro stile da queste influenze?
Ciao a tutti! Barcellona è davvero una città incredibile stimolante in molti sensi. Ci siamo stati per un breve viaggio durante il Sonar di 6 anni fa e, siccome stava crescendo in noi la stanchezza per il caos di Londra, abbiamo deciso di dare a Barcellona una possibilità. Non ci siamo mai pentiti. Qui abbiamo tutto quello di cui abbiamo bisogno ed entrambi abbiamo uno studio musicale nelle case in cui viviamo che ci permette di immergerci nella musica appena torniamo da un lungo tour. Inoltre molti dei nostri amici dj’s vivono qui (Squillace, Jonny White, Ali Dubfire, Bacchetti per citarne qualcuno) e finiamo sempre per stare insieme e darci l’un l’altro ispirazione, in un modo o in un altro. Anche Berlino è un luogo che è decisamente nei nostri cuori, dal momento che lì la musica è come da nessuna altra parte ma sfortunatamente riusciamo ad andarci soprattutto durante i nostri live e quindi non riusciamo mai a fermarci per il tempo che vorremmo. Abbiamo un sacco di amici a Berlino che ci chiedono di passare un pò di tempo insieme in studio, dovremmo davvero prendere in considerazione queste proposte e passarci più tempo, se non fosse per il piccolo problema che noi siamo in tour non stop ogni fine settimana… (ride)
A più di 10 anni dall’inizio della vostra collaborazione avete fatto uscire nel 2011 il vostro primo album Follow My Liebe. Perché avete aspettato tanto?
Principalmente perché abbiamo voluto farci conoscere nella scena e lasciarci influenzare dai luoghi di tutto il mondo prima di impegnarci in un progetto così grande. È stato importante poter raccogliere queste esperienze e portarle a casa con noi per permetterci di creare dei pezzi. Abbiamo iniziato il nostro primo album nel 2008 e sono passati molti mesi prima che fosse finito. Una volta completo lo abbiamo ascoltato su una spiaggia in Messico e ci siamo resi conto che non stava raccontando del tutto la storia che avevamo immaginando. Così ne abbiamo scartato una buona parte e abbiamo ricominciato dall’inizio. Siamo molto più felici adesso di Follow My Liebe perché è un album molto più maturo di come lo avevamo previsto inizialmente e racconta davvero la storia che avevamo immaginato. Inoltre ci ha insegnato a non affrettare le cose, non importa quante aspettative ci sono da parte degli altri.
Ci raccontate la scelta del titolo?
Ahhh… in molti ci hanno fatto questa domanda. (ride) Il titolo è un gioco di parole con il detto “Follow My Lead”. Abbiamo semplicemente cambiato la parola Lead in Liebe per dare un tocco di mistero al titolo. In inglese sarebbe “Follow My Love” e dal momento che la struttura musicale dell’album è in gran parte composta da melodie emozionali e intricate, abbiamo ritenuto opportuno chiamarlo in questo modo.
I party di Flying Circus sono ormai una istituzione che quest’anno verrà celebrata a Ibiza: dal 12 luglio al 4 ottobre per 13 venerdì, sarete al Sankeys. Cosa avete in mente?
Persino in questo stesso momento stiamo letteralmente mangiando, bevendo e dormendo con Flying Circus in mente. Vogliamo creare la migliore esperienza possibile per la nostra squadra e per i nostri fan e stiamo cercando di lavorare sui dettagli in modi molto interessanti per creare un buon equilibrio con dj set, live e djs donne. Stiamo anche lavorando a stretto contatto con lo staff Sankeys per riuscire a creare la nostra idea durante le serate. Vogliamo che sia un luogo per ballare, ma anche un luogo per perdersi e sperimentare cose nuove. Abbiamo alcune sorprese nel cilindro che non possiamo ancora rivelare. Teneteci d’occhio.
Le feste di Flying Circus, si legge dalla pagina Facebook ufficiale, sono nate dalla voglia di suonare insieme ai vostri amici djs che, sempre in giro per il mondo come voi, riuscite a vedere poco. È ancora un’occasione per incontrarvi o negli anni avete scelto di invitare altri artisti perché interessati a loro?
In realtà è un insieme di entrambe le cose. Ci sforziamo di offrire le migliori lineups possibili che includono un mix di vecchi amici che certamente faranno un ottimo lavoro e nuovi talenti in cui crediamo veramente e a cui vogliamo dare la possibilità di brillare per conto proprio. Ma la cosa migliore dei party di Flying Circus sarà sempre l’energia che si crea suonando con gente che conosciamo e amiamo. Non potremo mai dimenticare i momenti vissuti suonando con alcuni dei più grandi talenti del mondo musicale, sui dancefloor di alcuni dei posti più folli del mondo. Mi vengono già in mente un paio di storie che potremmo raccontare ai nostri nipoti un giorno, o forse no. (ride)
Con la vostra etichetta Supernature vi prefiggete l’obiettivo di dare la possibilità ad artisti non ancora molto conosciuti di entrare a far parte della scena musicale. Come è stato il vostro percorso?
Dire che è stato incredibile è un eufemismo. Il concetto è stato molto chiaro fin dall’inizio, ma è stata una vera e propria lotta per imparare tutti i trucchi dall’interno e per eseguire in modo corretto un’etichetta. C’è voluto un pò per dominarla, ma eravamo molto sicuri della nostra idea di musica e immagine e questo ci ha permesso di sopravvivere in un mercato che è incredibilmente saturo, specialmente ultimamente. Dietro abbiamo una squadra molto forte e crediamo moltissimo in ogni singolo disco e artista che produciamo. Nel corso degli anni i nostri artisti sono diventati nostri amici e cerchiamo sempre di spingerli in direzioni diverse, di farli crescere ma senza renderlo troppo evidente. Finora ha funzionato molto bene e un sacco di artisti sono rimasti con noi sin dall’inizio.
Quali sono le vostre influenze non solo musicali?
Musicalmente parlando ci influenzano le persone che riescono a spingere al limite i confini del suono: gente come Pink Floyd e i Doors hanno esercitato un’enorme influenza su di noi grazie al modo in cui riuscirono a ipnotizzare gli ascoltatori. Non dimenticherò mai la prima volta che ho ascoltato The Dark Side of the Moon o Riders on the Storm. È stata un’enorme rivelazione musicale che rimane con me ancora oggi. Che ci crediate o no anche il cibo ha un’enorme influenza. Posso dirti senza dubbio che facciamo sempre musica migliore dopo un buon pasto. Gli amici e la famiglia sono indubbiamente le persone più stimolanti per noi e che ci spingono continuamente ad essere migliori.
Una cosa del passato, una del presente e una del futuro degli Audiofly che vorreste condividere con i vostri fan.
La sera che ho incontrato Anthony per la prima volta, lui stava cercando in tutti i modi di evitare di uscire, ma alla fine un nostro amico è riuscito a convincerlo. Senza di lui, gli Audiofly probabilmente non sarebbero mai nati. In questi giorni siamo molto presi dallo Yoga e dalla meditazione, e davvero ci sta aiutando a trovare l’equilibrio tanto necessario per sopravvivere a questo stile di vita. Per il futuro stiamo progettando di prenderci un pò di tempo e iniziare a produrre un nuovo album. Anche se ricordo di averlo detto anche in vecchie interviste 3 anni prima di completare Follow My Liebe, speriamo di non metterci lo stesso tempo questo volta.
Qual è attualmente lo Stato più attento e ricettivo alla vostra musica?
Ne nominerò più di uno per diversi motivi: Russia per la loro passione per la musica, Messico per la loro resistenza e USA per il crescente interesse per la musica underground.
Kolors è il primo album completo ad uscire per la vostra etichetta Supernature ed è frutto di una grande collaborazione. I 15 artisti che hanno contribuito, hanno scelto come titolo della loro traccia un colore che ne definisse l’essenza. Da dove nasce l’idea?
L’idea ci è venuta mentre stavamo raccogliendo tutta la musica per il progetto. Non avevamo un concept in quel momento, ma nel corso di una sessione di ascolto di tutti i brani ci siamo resi conto che esisteva una profonda connessione tra stili di musica e le sfumature di colore. È come dire per esempio che il rosso ha molte sfumature, ma essenzialmente rimarrà rosso nella sostanza. Lo stesso accade con la musica: insistiamo molto sui sottogeneri, più house e techno, ma il nucleo sarà sempre lo stesso, con molte varianti differenti. A tutti gli artisti è piaciuta l’idea e hanno lottato (in senso buono però) tra di loro per trovare il colore migliore. Siamo davvero entusiasti di presentare questo album al grande pubblico, soprattutto perché, dopo aver rilasciato per un lungo periodo solo singoli, ha senso ora pubblicare qualcosa con un chiaro concetto dietro.

Luca Saporito and Anthony Middleton are the Anglo-Italian duo behind the project Audiofly: it was a chance meeting in 2002 to raise awareness of the two djs that, already included in the London music scene, combine their talents to create immediately a powerful house music, original and experimental appreciated as much by the clubs (Space Ibiza, Fabric, Warung), as the industry press (DJ Magazine). In 2006, the creativity of Luke and Anthony gives birth Flying Circus, now recognized as one of the most successful and popular event of the world dance scene. There are many collaborations started in the years until the publication in 2011 of their first album, Follow My Liebe, for Get Physical, with sounds that go from downtempo and ambient up to the house as straight and electronics. 12th June 2013 Kolors comes out for their own label Supernature: a compilation which was attended by fifteen artists and the music that explores through a wide spectrum of colors. But let them tell us about themselves.
Hi Luca, Hi Anthony, you are an Anglo-Italian duo based in Barcelona and in close contact with the Berlin music scene. How has your style from these influences?
Hello everyone! Barcelona is really an incredible city and very inspiring in many senses. All we needed to move here was a short trip during sonar 6 years ago and, as we were growing increasingly tired of the chaos of London, we decided to give Barcelona a try. We never looked back. We have all we need here and we both have music studios in our house, which allows us to immerse ourselves in music as soon we land from long tours. Also many of our dj friends live here (Squillace, Jonny White, Ali Dubfire, Bacchetti to mention a few) and we always end up together and giving each other inspiration of some form or another. Berlin is also a place that is firmly in our hearts, as the music scene there is like nowhere else but unfortunately we only get to visit it mostly during our DJ gigs so we never get to spend as much time there as we want to. We have loads of offers to get in the studio with some friends in Berlin so we should really consider taking these offers up and spend more time there… if it wasn’t for the small problem that we are touring non stop every weekend… (laughs).
After more than 10 years from the beginning of your cooperation you did release in 2011 your first album Follow My Liebe. Why have you waited so long?
Firstly we wanted to make ourselves known in the scene and get influenced by places around the world before we would commit to such a big project. It was important for us to bring these experiences collected on the road at home with us and allow us to form musical pieces with it. We actually started our first album in 2008 and we spent months finishing it, but once it was complete, we listened back to it on a beach in Mexico and we realised that it wasn’t telling the full story the way we envisioned it. So we scrapped most of it and started all over again. We are so much happier now with Follow My Liebe as it’s a much more mature album than we originally intended and it really tells the story how we imagined it in our heads. It also taught us to never rush things, no matter how many expectations there are from people.
You can explain us the meaning of the title?
Ahhh… many people have asked us that question before. (laughs) The title is a play on words with the saying “follow my lead.” We simply changed the word from Lead to Liebe to give a touch a mystery to the title. In English it means Follow my Love and as the album musical structure is mostly made up of emotional and intricate melodies, it felt appropriate to call it like that.
The Flying Circus parties have become an institution, which will be celebrated this year in Ibiza where, from 12th of July until 4th of October, for thirteen Friday you’ll be at Sankeys. What you have in mind?
Even at this very moment in time in which we are writing to you, we are literally eating, drinking and sleeping with Flying Circus in our minds. We want to create the best possible experience for our crew and fans alike and we are trying to work the line ups in very interesting ways, creating a good balance between dj sets, live acts and female DJ’s. We’re also working very closely with the staff at Sankeys to allow us to create our own concept within the night. We want it to be a place to dance, but also a place to get lost and experience new things. We have some surprises up our sleeve that we can’t reveal just yet. Watch this space.
The Flying Circus parties, we read from the official Facebook page, were born from the desire to play together with your friends who you don’t get to see because you are all going round the world in different directions mostly. It’s still an opportunity to meet you or in your choose to invite other artists because interested in them?
It’s actually a mixture of both. We strive to provide the best possible lineups that will include a mixture of old friends who will certainly rock the house and new talents in which we truly believe and want to give them an opportunity to shine on their own. But the best thing about The Flying Circus parties will always be the energy created by the opportunity of playing with people we know and Love. We can never forget the moments we have had so far, playing with some of the biggest talents in the music business, rocking the dancefloor in some of the most insane locations on earth. I Can think of a few stories already that we will tell to our grandkids one day, or maybe not (laughs).
With your label Supernature you want to give the opportunity to artists not yet well known to join the music scene. How was your journey?
To say it has been incredible is an understatement. The concept was very clear from the beginning but it was a real struggle to learn all the inside tricks to run a label properly. It took us a while to navigate through it, but we were very sure of our musical and image concept and that allowed us to survive in a market that is incredibly saturated, especially these days. We have a very strong team behind it and we believe strongly in every single record and artist we sign. Our artists throughout the years have become our good friends and we always try to push them in different directions, build them up but without being too obvious. That has worked very well so far and a lot of the artist have stayed and played with us since the very beginning.
What are your influences not only musical?
Musically speaking our influences are people who manage to push the boundaries of sound to the limits: People like Pink Floyd and The Doors were a huge influence on us because of the way they managed to hypnotise the listeners. I will never forget the first time I listened to Dark Side of the Moon or Riders on the Storm. It was a huge musical revelation that stayed with me until today. Believe it or not food is a huge influence too. I can tell you without a doubt that we always make better music after we finished a good meal. Friends and family are without a doubt the most inspiring people out there for us and who continually push us to be the best we can be.
A thing from past, the present and the future of Audiofly that you would like to share with your fans.
The evening I met Anthony for the first time he was trying very hard to avoid coming out but finally a friend of us managed to convince him. Without him, Audiofly would have probably never been born. These days we are very much into Yoga and meditation and it’s really helping us to find the much-needed balance to survive this lifestyle. For the future we are planning to take some time off and start producing a new album. Although I remember saying this in old interviews 3 years before the completion of Follow My Liebe so I hope it won’t take that much time this time around.
Which is currently the most attentive and receptive Country to your music?
I’d mention more than one for different reasons: Russia for their passion for music, Mexico for their endurance and USA for the growing interest in underground music.
Kolors is the first full-length album out for your label Supernature and is the result of great collaboration. The fifteen artists who contributed, they chose as their title track a color that define the essence. Where does this idea?
The idea came while we were collecting all of the music for the project. We didn’t have a concept at the time but during a listening session of all the tracks we realised that there is a deep connection between styles of music and color shades. Say for example, red has many shades but essentially it will remain red in substance. The same happen with music: We insist so much on giving sub genres to most house and techno track, but the core will always be the same with many different variants. All of the artists on it really loved the idea and were fighting (in good spirit though) amongst each other to find the best color. We are really excited to present this concept to the general public, especially because, after a long time of releasing just singles, it makes sense to put out something with a clear concept behind it.
