È un onore per noi di Soundwall poter intervistare Phil Weeks, uno dei nomi più forti e autorevoli dell’intero movimento house. Phil Weeks, infatti, è uno di quegli artisti che, grazie alle sue performance, alla sua musica e ai suoi progetti (la Robsoul Recordings su tutti) hanno saputo scrivere pagine indelebili dell’intero panorama elettronico internazionale.
Oltre dieci anni di carriera ti rendono uno degli artisti di riferimento del movimento house europeo. Col tempo, grazie ad un intenso lavoro sia in studio di registrazione che in consolle, sei diventato uno degli artisti chiave della scena undergound francese. Come ci si sente ad essere un veterano del panorama elettronico ed un modello per molti giovani artisti?
Accidenti, mi fai sentire vecchio così…sono ancora un ragazzo, eheh.
Ok allora, penso che devo fare una cosa magari essere una guida per la nuova generazione. Dopo i pochi anni passati di elettro e minimal, non sono erano le tante teste House a fare le nostre cose. Sono stato uno di loro, non lo nego, solo l’amore per i beats qualunque era la moda. Abbiamo bisogno di artisti più giovani che vadano in questa direzione, alcuni dal sangue fresco di gangsters House. Noi, il Brand!
La tua musica e i tuoi dj set possiedono una sensualità davvero rara, come se cercassi di instaurare un rapporto estremamente intimo col dancefloor. È con lo stesso spirito che è nata Robsoul?
Ho iniziato la Robsoul nel 1999, avevo solo 23 anni. Non avevo idea di nulla in quel momento, non avevo piani, facevo solo musica tutto il giorno, e cercavo di controllare più cose senza passare per altre etichette.
Amo la musica soul, canzoni d’amore, “pimp shit” …in fondo sono tutto quello che è per le ragazze.
Con alle spalle un decennio di successi, molti dei quali veri e propri capolavori del genere, Robsoul è diventata un etichetta . Quali sono i prossimi obiettivi? Qual è la prossima frontiera da abbattere? Cos’altro pensi possa regalare al suo, sempre più ampio, pubblico?
Onestamente, non ho alcun obiettivo o strategia di marketing…Forse dovrei, un giorno…
I miei piani sono solo divertire ogni pista da ballo, sparando beats su beats, come una piccola macchina e continuare a produrre la musica che voglio suonare. Se il successo arriva in questo modo, raggiungendo una più ampia audience, sarò felice. Sono pronto per questo …lol…
Di quale dei tuoi lavori sei più fiero? A quale degli EP uscito su Robsoul sei maggiormente legato?
Li amo tutti, ogni volta che ho un brano che esce vuol dire che lo amo veramente.
Alcuni stanno vendendo più di altri, ma questo non lo riesco a controllare, posso solo controllare la qualità.
Sono veramente orgoglioso di tutti i Fries&Bridge (con mio fratello Hector Moralez). Non abbiamo prodotto troppe cose, ma per 10 anni abbiamo lavorato insieme. Robsoul 50 è uno dei miei favoriti, Robsoul 25, Robsoul 7, Robsoul 18, Robsoul 11, Robsoul 10, Robsoul 66, Robsoul 44, Robsoul 47, Robsoul 48, Robsoul 57, Robsoul 58, Robsoul 59, Robsoul 37, Robsoul 38, Robsoul Ltd07, Robsoul 16, Robsoul 33/34, Robsoul 29…
Nonostante tu abbia già raggiunto la piena maturità artistica, da quale collega senti ancora di poter imparare qualcosa?
Cerco sempre di imparare da tutti e da tutto.
Recentemente ho cambiato il mio sequencer (per l’Akai MPC3000) ed imparare ad usarlo è stato divertente. La motivazione è la parola chiave per essere al top.
È evidente la tua affinità con Chris Carrier e con tutti quei nomi che hanno scritto la storia dell’house americana e che stanno tornando di gran moda nel vecchio continente, Dj Sneak su tutti. Tutto ciò è solo figlio del grande rispetto che hai nei loro confronti, o il lavorare con loro tira fuori quanto di meglio Phil Weeks può offire?
Devo dire che sono innanzitutto miei amici e tutti abbiamo la stessa passione, fare musica e fare beats. Così, quando siamo insieme ed abbiamo tempo, amiamo fare musica. Il mio “Fries & Bridge” duo con Hector Moralez, “PS Project” con Sneak “P & D” con Didier Allyne o tutto il mio lavoro con Chris Carrier sono esempi perfetti.
Anche la mia recente collaborazione con i buoni amici italiani “Krakatoa” (Samuel & Pisti), è stata fantastica (Robsoul 80). Dal punto di vista di DJ, se io suono con buoni amici che amano la stessa musica che amo io, sono sicuro che sarà meglio per me.
Cosa ne pensi di tutti quei giovani artisti francesi che ultimamente stanno riscuotendo un grande successo? Ci stiamo riferendo ai vari Dj W!ld, Dyed Soundorom, Varoslav, Seuil e Anthony Collins. Chi di loro pensi abbia le carte in regola per diventare davvero un big?
Difficile da dire, W!ld è sulla mia etichetta e lui è della vecchia scuola come me; conosco anche Dyed, ma è passato molto tempo da quando l’ho visto girare. C’è bisogno di guardare fuori come per Joss Moog (controllate tutti i suoi Ep su Robsoul), Gauthier DM (fratello minore di W!ld, anche con una uscita su un campione Robsoul), Yakine (con una prossima release in uscita a Settembre), Sam Karlson & Steve O Steen stanno facendo anche piacevoli beats.

It is an honor for us interviews Phil Weeks, one of the strongest and most influential names of the whole house moving. Phil Weeks, in fact, is one of those artists who, thanks to his performances, his music and his projects (The Robsoul Recordings on all) were able to write whole pages indelible international electronic scene.
Over ten years of career you make one of the artists reference of the European house movement. Over time, through an hard work in the studio recording and on the console, you have become one of the key artists of the French underground scene. How does it feel to be a veteran of the electronic scene and a model for many young artists?
Damn, you make me feel so old… I’m still a kid man..lol
Ok then, I guess I have to do my thing and maybe be a guide for the new generation.
After the past few years of Electro and minimal, we were not a lot of House heads to do our thing. I’ve been one of them, no compromise, just the love for the beats whatever the fashion was. We need more young artists going that way, some fresh house gangsters’ blood. We The Brand!
Your music and your dj sets have a really rare sensuality, as if you tried to create a very intimate relationship with the dancefloor. Is it the same spirit that was born Robsoul?
I started Robsoul in 1999, i was 23 years old at this time.
I had no idea about anything at that time, no plans, just doing music all day, and try to control more things without going thru other labels. I love soul music, love songs, pimp shit…so…basically all for the ladies.
Boasting a decade of success, many of them real masterpieces, has become a label Robsoul. What are the next targets? What is the next frontier to be killed? What else do you think can give to its increasingly broad public?
Honestly, I don’t have any targets or marketing strategy…Maybe I should…One day…
My only plans are to keep on rocking every dance floor, firing beats over beats like a little machine and keep on producing the music I want to play. If the success comes this way, reaching a bigger audience…I’ ll be happy. I’m ready for it…lol
What you’re more proud of your work? To which EPs release on Robsoul are you most fond of?
I love all of them, every time i have a track coming out means i really love it. Some are selling more than others but this i cannot control, I can control only the quality. I’m really proud of all the Fries & Bridges (with my bro Hector Moralez). We haven’t produced too many things but for 10 years we‘ve been working together

Although you have already reached full artistic maturity, is there a colleague whom you feel you can still learn something?
I’m always trying to learn from everybody and from everything.
I recently change my sequencer (for Akai MPC3000) and learning how to kill it with it was hella fun. Motivation is the key word to be on top of the thing. Getting High also helps.
Clearly your relationship with Chris Carrier and all those names who have written the American history of house and that are returning topical in the old continent, DJ Sneak at all. Is this only son of the great respect you have for them, or working with them brings out the best Phil Weeks can offer?
I have to say they are my friends first and we all have the same passion, playing music & doing beats. So when we are together and have the time we love to do music. My “Fries & Bridges” Duo with Hector Moralez, “PS Project” with Sneak “P&D” with Didier Allyne or all my work with Chris Carrier are perfect examples.
Also my recent collaboration with Italian good friend “Krakatoa” (Samuel & Pisti) was fantastic (Robsoul 80). From a DJ point of view, if I play with good friends that love the same music than me then for sure it will bring the best of me.

Hard to say, Wild is on my label and he’s from the old school like me, I know also Dyed but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen him spin. You need to watch out for Joss Moog (check all his eps on Robsoul – Classic shit) Gauthier DM (little brother of Wild, also with a release on a Robsoul sampler) Yakine (with an upcoming release in September) Sam Karlson & Steve O Steen are doing some nice beats also.
