Ti seguiamo ormai da parecchio tempo e a quanto pare sono passati i tempi in cui i tuoi set erano pieni di suoni minimali e filtiri infiniti. Ormai la melodia, il funk e il calore della deep riempono le tue sacche di dischi. Il nuovo “Massimo Di Lena” a discapito del vecchio “Massi DL” sinceramente ci piace molto di più… Come mai questo cambio drastico, ti sei fatto influenzare da ciò che ti succede intorno o senti queste sonorità più tue rispetto a quelle vecchie ?
Diciamo che non è stata una scelta “pensata”, ma è stata semplicemente una scelta dovuta ad una esigenza di esprimermi con altre sonorità, poichè quelle che mi hanno caratterizzato per qualche anno non le sentivo piu mie. In ogni caso la musica è influenzata da tante cose quindi non metto in dubbio che il mio percorso sia stato condizionato anche da altri fattori come ad esempio amicizie, stile di vita, visione del mondo del clubbing, della scena del passato, della scena attuale, ecc..
Non penso quindi di riuscire a identificarmi con un genere in particolare in quanto la mia musica è e sarà sicuramente in una continua evoluzione. Il nuovo progetto Massimo Di Lena punta ad essere uno specchio in versione musicale di me stesso. E’ un progetto che quindi si evolverà a pari passo con la mia maturazione dal punto di vista personale e musicale.
Questo ha influito anche sul tuo modo di suonare ? Qual’è il tuo setup attuale in console ? Usi ancora Traktor ?
Da 4 mesi sono tornato a suonare dischi (e cd). provo a comprare la migliore musica che esce di giorno in giorno (non ne trovo molta al momento) ma ciò che faccio di piu è una ricerca accurata di musica da comprare dal passato. ci sono talmente tanti dischi stampati tra l’89 ed il 2000 suonabilissimi e bellissimi (e molte volte anche sconosciuti) da poter anche smettere di ascoltare le nuove uscite e dedicarmi solo all’acquisto di vecchie gemme. Inoltre, a mio avviso, ora più che mai bisognerebbe valorizzare musica qualitativamente buona. Non ha importanza che siano tracce house, techno, minimal, acid etc. Ogni genere nasconde tracce che possono essere collocate in maniera coerente ed attinente in un djset.
Penso che per la musica che sto proponendo al momento, l’uso di traktor o di una qualunque piattaforma digitale non si sposa bene (nonostante io rispetti l’evoluzione delle tecnologie nel campo del djing). Per far sorridere il pubblico bastano due piatti ed un mixer 🙂
A proposito d sorriso, mi ricordo di te con un sorriso enorme sulla consolle del Goa, era precisamente un giovedi sera e suonava Luciano. Niente di particolare, se non che lo svizzero stava passando un tuo disco, che oltretutto è uscito proprio sulla sua Cadenza. Vuoi racconatrci come è nata questa collaborazione tra di voi e soprattutto vuoi dirci qualcosa in più su Gypsytown ?
La collaborazione tra me e Cadenza è iniziata per puro caso se pur con grande piacere. Ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere Luciano a miami al WMC dell’anno scorso e poichè avevo una 20ina di tracce libere pensai di dargliele. Non tanto come demo, ma semplicemente per avere un suo parere, cosa molto importante per me. Non è passato molto tempo e si è subito messo in contatto con me per dirmi che avrebbe avuto piacere che collaborassi con loro.E’ stata una grande soddisfazione per me in quanto Cadenza è stata da sempre un etichetta che ho stimato ed inoltre non ho creato tracce prettamente per Cadenza, con lo stile Cadenza, ispirandomi a tracce Cadenza, bensi ho semplicemente fatto tracce che in quel momento sentivo di fare ed è stato quindi un onore che fossero apprezzate.
Pochi giorni fa ti abbiamo visto in azione al Rashomon di Roma con Carola Pisaturo, è stato ovviamente un successo, vuoi raccontarci qualcosa in più sul vostro rapporto e soprattutto sul progetto Vegas Gas ? Hai in mente altre collaborazioni ?
Io e Carola prima ancora di collaborare siamo buonissimi amici. Lei per me è un grande esempio da seguire come persona e ha anche una grande cultura musicale. Certo capita a volte di avere differenti gusti musicali. Ma essendoci rispetto reciproco (musicale e non) c’è sempre la voglia di suonare insieme.
Per quanto riguarda il progetto Vegas Gas, speriamo di lavorare a qualcosa di nuovo presto, quindi sicuramente al primo Vegas Gas ci sarà un sequel 🙂 Al momento penso che porterò avanti solo le collaborazioni con Rio Padice (quindi Horacio) e appunto Vegas Gas con Carola.
Hai una tua etichetta, hai stampato su grandi label e hai sfornato più di qualche hit a quando un tuo Album ?
Quando avrò tracce a sufficenza per far capire alla gente esattamente che visione ho della musica senza dover dire altro allora vorrà dire che sarà il momento di un album.
Cosa prevede il tuo futuro ? Dove ti porterà la tua musica ? Ogni volta che ci sentiamo sei iper impegnato…
Non ho progetti ben definiti per il futuro. Sicuramente non voglio limitarmi a lavorare su tracce da ballo, ma soprattutto vorrei fare anche altro oltre che musica. Chissà, magari l’università 🙂 (me lo riprometto ogni anno)
Qualche novità per quanto riguarda le uscite dei prossimi mesi ?
Tra gennaio e febbraio 2010 usciranno un po di remixes che ho appena ultimato, tra cui un remix per 2020 vision, uno per Freerange, due per Cynosure ed uno per un etichetta rumena chiamata All Inn records. Inoltre dovrei iniziare una collaborazione piu assidua con Oslo essendo entrato da breve all’interno della loro agenzia di booking. altre cose sono ancora “work in progress” 🙂
Tra tutti i giovani che seguiamo sei quello che ci ha fatto sempre divertire di più, tra una battuta e un sorriso ti abbiamo sempre visto come una forza della natura, hai un’estro non indifferente e questo ci è sempre piaciuto… hai qualche riga, ma anche un video, una foto o qualsiasi cosa che ti passi per la testa per salutare noi e i nostri lettori a modo tuo…

We’ve been following you for a while now and apparently the times when your sets were full of minimalistic sounds and infinite filters. By now, melodies, the funk and the warm sense of deepness fill up your record bags. The new “Massimo Di Lena” compared to the older “Massi DL”, honestly, is liked much more by us… How did it come to this drastic change, did you get influenced by what happens around you or do you feel these kind of sounds are more yours compared to the older sounds?
Let’s say that it was not really a predicted choice, but simply a choice made because of the feeling that I needed to express myself with different sounds, and actually also because those sounds that characterised me for a few years, I did not feel really belonged to me. Anyhow music is influenced by many different things, so I won’t argue the fact that my “journey” was affected for example by friendships, lifestyle, visions on music and the world of clubbing, the history of the scene, the actual scene, etc…
So I don’t think I can identify myself with one specific genre, as far as my music is and for surely will be a continuous evolution. The new project Massimo Di Lena aims to be a musical reflection of myself. Therefore it’s a project that will evolve step by step with my maturing; from a musical point of view and a personal one.
Did this also influence your method of performing? How does your actual setup look like? Are you still using Traktor?
Since 4 months I’ve gone back to playing records (and CD’s) again. I try to buy the best music that gets released on a day to day basis (there is not much at the moment), but what I do more is a careful research of older music to buy. There are so many records released between 1989 and 2000 that are very playable and amazing (most of them unknown) to even just stop listening to new releases and dedicate myself only to the acquisition of old gems. Also, I’d like to warn, right now more than ever one has to value the good quality of music. It’s not important if they are techno, house, minimal or acid tracks. Every genre hides tracks that can be built coherently into any dj set.
I think in regard to the music I’m playing right now, the use of Traktor or any other digital platform is not really suitable (even though I respect the evolution of technology within music). All you need to make the crowd happy are two turntables and a mixer :).
Speaking of smiles, I remember you with a huge one in front of the DJ booth at Goa, it was precisely a Thursday night and Luciano was playing. Nothing that special, apart from him playing one of your records, which actually was released on his label, Cadenza. Could you tell us how this relationship between you two started and maybe tell us something more on Gypsytown?
The collaboration between me and Cadenza started very casually, but of course with great pleasure. I had the luck to meet Luciano in Miami at the WMC last year and since I had around 20 unsigned tracks, I thought of giving them to him. Not really as demos, but more to get an opinion from him, something that is really important for me. Not that much time passed and and he got into contact with me to let me know it would be a pleasure to collaborate with them. It was such a great satisfaction for me, since Cadenza has always been a label that I admire and moreover I hadn’t created tracks specifically for Cadenza, with the Cadenza style, getting inspired by the Cadenza sound, in fact I just created tracks that I felt like creating in that moment and it was an honour that they were appreciated.
A few days ago we saw you in action at Rashomon in Rome with Carola Pisaturo, it was obviously a great success, could you tell us a bit more on your relationship and especially about your project Vegas Gas? Do you have more collaborations in mind?
Even before collaborating, Carola and I have been good friends. For me she is a great example to follow as a person and she also has a great musical culture. Of course, sometimes it happens that we have different musical tastes. But having mutual respect (musical and not) there’s always a desire to play together.
Regarding the Vegas Gas project, we hope to work on something new very soon, so there will for sure be a sequel to the first Vegas Gas :). For the moment I just want to continue with the collaboration with Rio Padice (together we’re Horacio) and of course, Vegas Gas with Carola.
You have your own label, you’ve released on big labels, you’ve released more than a few hits, so when will it be time for an album?
When I have enough tracks to make people understand what vision I have on music without having to say more. Then it will be time for an album.
What does the future have in store for you? Where will your music bring you? Everytime we speak you always seem super busy…
I don’t have any well defined projects for the future. I definitely do not want to limit myself to making only tracks for the dancefloor, for sure I want to do stuff outside of music. Who knows, maybe University 🙂 (I promise it to myself every year).
Any news on new upcoming releases?
Between January and February 2010 a few remixes will be released that I just finished, amongst others a remix for 2020vision, one for Freerange, two for Cynosure and one for a Romanian label called All In Records. Apart from that I should be starting a bigger collaboration with Oslo Records since I’ve just become part of their booking agency. Other things are still “works in progress” :).
Amongst all of the youngsters you have always been the one that makes us have the most fun, with a joke here and there and a big smile, we’ve always seen you as a force of nature, you have such an outgoing character and we have always liked that….
