Quando hai deciso di iniziare la tua carriera da dj/producer e qual’è stato il tuo primo vinile/cd di cui hai un ricordo in particolare?
Ho capito che volevo fare questo nella vita a Capodanno del 1996, ma ho sempre frequentato dj e producer per via di mio fratello più grande. Ha sempre avuto un’influenza grandissima su di me; ha sempre avuto delle band, organizzava feste illegali in mezzo ai campi o nei pub e quindi sono stato svezzato prematuramente. Mentre per quanto riguarda il mio lato di producer, ho sempre fatto degli edit per suonarli, non ho mai avuto il tempo (o la pazienza) di sedermi ed imparare a produrre seriamente. Ma sono onesto, ho un rapporto particolare con l’atto di produrre, quindi doveva capitare in un modo o nell’altro. Per quanto riguarda i dischi, ce ne sono troppi di cui ho un ricordo in particolare ed è difficile sceglierne solo uno…
Vivendo in prima persona il clubbing italiano e in particolare quello di Roma dove emergere e’ veramente un compito arduo, noi di Soundwall, volevamo avere un punto della situazione “made in London”; si incontrano le stesse difficoltà o la cultura underground londinese e’ predisposta alla scoperta di nuovi talenti sfatando cosi’ le troppe pretese legate alla super guest di turno ?!
Beh, Londra è una città piena di competizione, abbiamo moltissimi talenti e bellissime serate, è una situazione interessante. Io credo che nel momento in cui suoni e produci solo quello che ti piace non hai bisogno di nient’altro.
Cosa ne pensi della scena musicale italiana? C’e’ qualche nome in particolare che apprezzi ?
Ad essere sincero non vengo in Italia da parecchio tempo, ma sono contento ed eccitato, perchè ogni volta è stato davvero divertente. Avrò alcune date dalle vostre parti nel corso dell’anno (come ad esempio la data di Venerdi 11 al party Discount del Circolo Degli Illuminati), quindi fareste meglio a farmi questa domanda verso Dicembre 🙂 Ma c’è qualcuno che amo incontrare ed ascoltare ogni volta che vengo ed è Luciano Esse, grandissimo dj.
Domanda secca, sei un’innovatore (digitale) o un nostalgico (analogico) ?
Direi entrambe. Uso ancora molti vinili e vecchi synth analogici quando sono nel mio piccolo studio, ma allo stesso tempo suono molti cd e uso tantissimo plug in.
Seguiamo con attenzione ogni tua uscita, personalmente sono rimasto incantato dal “Chicago Ep” sulla prestigiosa Wolf + Lamb e dalla sensualissima “Sunrise”, quali sono le tue influenze musicali che ti portano a compensare la tua vena creativa in studio ?
Questa è un’ottima domanda, se devo essere onesto non sono sicuro al 100% della risposta. Ascolto moltissima musica durante la settimana e attualmente tendo ad ascoltare moltissima roba vecchia. Il fatto di cambiare spesso influenza mi diverte, mi faccio rapire da diverse cose. Foto, film, suoni, persone, il viaggio inizia da qualsiasi cosa…
Le tue release nel 2010 ti (ci) hanno regalato molte soddisfazioni, cosa ti aspetti da questo nuovo anno e se puoi anticiparci qualcosina sui tuoi prossimi progetti e lavori?
Grazie, sono veramente felice vi sano piaciuti! 🙂 Spero che il 2011 sia eccitante come lo è stato il 2010. Nei prossimi mesi usciranno dei miei remix su Mobilee, Compost, Future Classic e no.19 (un remix per i Sect) e ovviamente su Fist or Finger l’etichetta che divido con il mio amico Craig Richards. Stiamo provando a far uscire qualche altra release dopo la seconda che è in uscita proprio questa settimana… La versione di Craig è sublime 😉

At which point you had the input to begin your career as a dj / producer and which was one of your first records/cds you have a happy memory in particular?
NYE 1996 was the 1st time I realised that I wanted to play records to people… but before that I had always hung out with DJs/Musicians and promoters because of my older brother.
He had a massive influence on me when I was younger – he was always in bands and running illegal parties in fields and pubs so I got introduced to all those people very early on.
As for the production side of things, I’ve always done edits and things just to play but I never really had the time (or patience) to physically sit down and learn how to write music properly.
But if I’m honest, I genuinely feel that writing music is something I’m just meant to be doing so I was going to happen whether I liked it or not so the sooner I started to learn the better : )
There are way too many records that hold memories (fond and not so fond) to pick out just one…
– Experiencing in first hand the club scene in Italy and in Rome in particular, where standing out is truly a hard task, we would like to know how it is like in London, if there are the same difficulties or London underground culture is more designed to discover new talents so discrediting too many claims related to super guest djs?!
Yea London is a very competitive place – we have so much great talent here with loads and loads of amazing nights so it is quite tricky; but I just think that as long as you’re doing what you want to and making/playing the music you want then thats all that really matters.
What do you think about the Italian music scene? There is some name that you appreciate in particular?
To be honest I haven’t been to Italy for a long-time but I’m really excited to come back because every time I have been, it’s been brilliant! I have a few dates over the course of this year so you might be better off asking me this question in December 🙂 Someone that I always love to see & hear is Luciano Esse – such a great DJ and bloody lovely bloke!

Both I guess…. I still play lots of records and use analogue synths in my little studio but at the same time also play CDs and use a load of plug in’s…
We follow carefully all your release, personally I was enchanted by the”Chicago EP” on the prestigious Wolf + Lamb and by the sensual “Sunrise”, which is your musical influence that makes you balance your creativity in the studio?
That’s a good question – I’m not 100% sure if I’m totally honest. I listen to a whole load of different music throughout the course of my week & actually tend to listen to a lot of older music
So maybe thats a part of it…. I think it’s always very tricky to pin point exactly where my influences come from because I get so inspired / effected / influenced by so many different things.
Pictures, people, music, sounds, films… the journey can start pretty much anywhere…
You(we) got real satisfaction from your releases in 2010, what do you expect from this new year and if you can tell us a little bit about your upcoming projects and work?

I’m hoping 2011 is going to be as exciting as 2010. I’ve got a few remixes that will be coming out over the next few months; for Mobilee, Compost, Future Classic and no.19 (a remix of the SECT guys) and of course Fist or Finger, which is a label I own and run alongside my good friend Craig Richards… We are going to try and put a few more volumes of those out this year… Volume 2 is out this week and is called Brick Jane. Craig’s version is sublime!!!! Completely bonkers but sublime!!!
