In occasione di Outdoor Festival, la rassegna che fino al 31 ottobre animerà Roma con arte, musica e cinema (e che vi abbiamo recentemente raccontato intervistando uno dei suoi fondatori), abbiamo scambiato quattro chiacchiere con Alexis Benard, meglio noto come Seuil, protagonista questo venerdì dell’attesissima festa OFF prodotta dai ragazzi di Micröclub nei sotterranei di Palazzo Velli, nel cuore di Trastevere. Il dj e produttore francese, colonna portante di Half Baked, uno dei marchi musicali più amati e rispettati del mondo, ci ha raccontato dei ricordi più belli che lo legano al party londinese e i progetti che lo vedranno coinvolto nell’immediato futuro, concludendo la breve intervista regalandoci una selezione di cinque brani fondamentali per la formazione artistica sua e di Eklo, la label che nel 2017 festeggerà i suoi primi dieci anni di attività.

Partiamo da Half Baked, la ragione della nostra chiacchierata: qual è il ricordo più bello che ti lega al party londinese?
Ho vissuto moltissimi momenti meravigliosi nel corso degli anni insieme ad Half Baked, ma ce n’è uno che ricordo in modo particolare: mi riferisco al party insieme a Fumiya Tanaka il giorno del mio compleanno, occasione nella quale ho avuto il piacere di suonare in closing. Alla fine del mio dj set, una volta accese tutte le luci, la folla ha iniziato a cantare “Happy Birthday” e Bruno di Half Baked è arrivato in consolle insieme a tutta la crew e a una torta piena di candeline. È stato davvero sorprendente, un momento davvero speciale. Penso che ci sia in rete anche il video!
In che modo pensi Half Baked stia contribuendo alla tua crescita artistica?
L’aspetto migliore è l’esserne parte sin dall’inizio e ciò ci ha permesso di guidare il nostro pubblico dovunque volessimo. Avere una residency al di fuori della propria nazione è meraviglioso perché ti consente di visitare regolarmente un luogo – e quindi di conoscerlo in modo approfondito – e di seguirne allo stesso tempo lo sviluppo e la crescita. In questo modo si ha la possibilità di crescere di pari passo, ma al tempo di seguire un’evoluzione del tutto indipendente. Si tratta di un’esperienza condivisa tra il party e il dj: ti ritrovi a suonare dinnanzi a un pubblico che conosci e che ti porta a sperimentare, a cercare di sorprenderlo e a prendere sempre maggiori rischi…si tratta certamente di un’esperienza!
Insieme ad Half Baked hai proposto la tua musica di fronte a diverse platee. Cosa ti aspetti dal pubblico di Roma, considerando che ti esibirai nei sotterranei di un palazzo del centro storico della città?
Ho preso parte a bei party e ho vissuto belle esperienze in Italia e mi aspetto altrettanto da quanto mi attende venerdì, trattandosi tra l’altro di una location così particolare. Non vedo davvero l’ora di vedere questo sotterraneo e di suonarci…è la prima volta in club con queste caratteristiche! A Roma, invece, ci sono già stato un paio di volte ma mai per party simili.
Quello che ti attende è un autunno ricco di musica. Vuoi raccontarci del prossimo EP su Concrete Music? Cosa lo rende a tuo avviso speciale?
L’EP uscirà a dicembre ed è un lavoro strettamente connesso col live che ho proposto al Weather Festival nel 2015. Brice, che gestisce il festival, ha voluto pubblicare due estratti del set, così ho registrato dei nuovi edit e ho aggiunto una traccia inedita al pacchetto. Due lavori, quindi, sono più “datati” mentre il terzo è più recente; quest’ultimo suona più veloce e presenta un suono più acid rispetto agli edit. Per produrre l’intero EP ho utilizzato esclusivamente una TR909, una TR606 e un SH101.
Uscirà a breve sulla tua Eklo 97.4 “Roots 82”, un omaggio La Reunion, l’isola dove sei nato. In che modo questa terra ha contribuito alla tua formazione musicale?
Ho vissuto sull’isola fino ai diciotto anni e nei suoi rave nei boschi ho scoperto la musica elettronica. Il suono delle feste era trance, drum n bass, tribale, techno e hardcore…a dirla tutta nulla di paragonabile con la scena club, ma solo rave all’aria aperta. Questi sono stati i generi ad avermi avvicinato alla musica e ad aver costituito il mio primissimo background come dj. Nulla di tutto ciò è però in 97.4 “Roots 82” – né trance, né drum n bass, né hardcore -, che comunque resta un omaggio a questo luogo importantissimo per me.
La label festeggerà dieci anni il prossimo anno. Avete in mente qualcosa per celebrare questa importante ricorrenza? C’è qualcosa che bolle in pentola per il pubblico italiano?
Sì, certo! Abbiamo in programma un doppio EP firmato Justin Zerbst (materiale unreleased del 1998) e un disco dei Les Points. Sto lavorando inoltre a una compilation celebrativa dei dieci anni con all’interno tracce prodotte dagli artisti della famiglia Eklo e da altri amici…passerò sicuramente dall’Italia per dei party, ma qualcosa di speciale avverrà a Parigi. Per il momento, però, intendo mantenere il segreto!

Thanks to Outdoor Festival, which is going to cheer up Rome with art, music and cinema until October 31st, we had the opportunity to have a brief talk with Alexis Benard, better known as Seuil, who will be performing this coming Friday within Microclub’s OFF party in Palazzo Velli’s basement, straight into the earth of Trastevere. The French dj/producer, one of the main heads of Half Baked (beloved and respected London-based brand), shared with us his best memories related to this party and the projects which will involve him in the coming future, concluding his interview with five tracks which have been fundamental for both his artistic growth and the one of his label, Eklo, which will turn ten right away in 2017.
Let’s start from Half Baked, the reason why we got in touch: What’s your most enduring memory from the infamous London party?
I’ve had lots of great moments through the years at Half Baked, but I can remember one in particular when I played on my birthday there, with Fumiya on the line up and I was closing the party. At the end they just turned on all the lights and the whole crowd started to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and Bruno from HB and all the crew arrived behind me with a cake full of candles, that was pretty amazing, a really special moment. I think you can find a video of this on the internet!
How do you think that Half Baked has contributed to your artistic growth?
The great thing is we were at the birth of something so we could take the people wherever we wanted to go with it. Having a residency outside of your home nation, it’s amazing because you visit regularly and get to see how the things are progressing in a place you know well. So you follow the evolution of it and try to evolve in your own way outside of the event, too. It becomes a mutual experience between the party and the DJs, you’re playing to a crowd who you know will push you to try things, surprise them, take more risks…so for sure, it gives you experience.
Together with Half Baked you have played your music in front of lots of different crowds. What do you expect from the one in Rome, considering you’re going to do it in the dungeon of an historical building within the city centre?
I’ve had great experiences in Italy, and I expected it to be the same again when I heard the party was taking place in such a crazy place. Really looking forward to seeing this dungeon and playing in it, I guess it will be a first-time experience for me.
I’ve played in Rome couple of times already but to be honest this is the first time I’m gonna be DJing in this kind of place.
This coming fall sounds really promising from a musical point of view for you. Would you like to talk about your brand new EP on Concrete Music? What, in your opinion, makes it special?
Yes sure, the EP is coming out in December on Concrete Music. It’s very closely connected to the live set I played for the Weather Festival in 2015. Brice, who runs the festival, wanted to release two jams from the set, so I recorded new edits of them for him and then I added a third track. So two tracks that are a little bit older and one more recent, which is faster with an acid feeling. I just used the 909, 606 and SH101 to make the entire thing.
Your new EP 97.4 “Roots 82” on your own label, Eklo, is a tribute to La Reunion, the island where you were born. In which way has your homeland contributed to your artistic education?
I lived there until I was 18 and discovered electronic music through rave parties in the woods. The music was trance, drum n bass, tribal, techno, hardcore,…
nothing took place in the clubs really, it mostly outside raves. This all the kind of music I was playing when I first started, before I even began to play in clubs. I learned how to DJ with all these kind of sounds. So for sure the LP is a tribute to La Reunion, the music in it is not trance or dnb or hardcore but it’s a special project from this alter ego (97.4) also from La Réunion.
The label will be celebrating its ten year anniversary next year. Are you planning something to celebrate that milestonel? Is there something going down for the Italian fans?
Yes right, we have a special Justin Zerbst 2nd EP (unreleased stuff from 98) and Les Points will be appearing also. I’m planning a vinyl compilation for the 10th anniversary with new music from Eklo artists and also some other friends… I will pass through Italy for sure, but there’s a special party happening in Paris. I’m going to keep it secret for now though!
