Nic Fanciulli è uno dei nomi più conosciuti del panorama inglese. DJ e producer, alle spalle ha più di 10 anni di carriera, collaborazioni prestigiose, tour mondiali e una nomination ai Grammy. Dal 2005 gestisce con successo la Saved Records, pubblicando e promuovendo artisti come Robert Dietz e Andrea Oliva, per citarne alcuni. A Soundwall racconta del suo tour, della label e del dj mix uscito per Balance.
Ciao Nic, benvenuto su Soundwall. Grazie per aver trovato un pò di tempo per noi. Come procede?
Va tutto alla grande, grazie. Sono giusto a metà del mio tour in Asia per promuovere il mio dj mix per Balance.
Vieni da Maidstone, un piccolo paese in Inghilterra. Com’era la scena quando hai iniziato? Ha in qualche modo influenzato la tua musica?
Maidstone ha sempre avuto una scena molto attiva, fin dalle mie prime date da ragazzo, mi fu subito offerta una residenza in un locale e la possibilità di suonare a fianco ad alcuni dei dj più importanti di quel periodo. Quello che stiamo cercando di fare ora con i party Saved, è contribuire ancora di più al miglioramento della scena. In un certo senso cerchiamo di ripagare la gente di Maidstone per tutto il supporto che ha sempre dato alla label, portando artisti che normalmente non potrebbero sentire nel loro paese. L’ultimo party è stato il 6 maggio con Luciano, davvero grandioso!
Come lavori in studio? C’è qualche artista con cui ti piacerebbe dividerlo?
Quando si parla di studio, per me non ci sono regolo precise. Le idee mi vengono principalmente durante i viaggi, poi le sviluppo in secondo momento. Questa è il grande vantaggio della tecnologia. Ho realizzato molte delle mie collaborazioni grazie ad internet, passandoci il file via mail finchè non eravamo soddisfatti. Al momento mi piacerebbe lavorare con Laurent Garnier. Se dovessi pensare a dei cantanti invece, direi Sia o Beth Gibbons.
Parlando del tuo sound, come lo descriveresti in 3 aggettivi?
Ricco di groove, melodico ed interessante!
Ho visto che sei in tour. Qual è la data che aspetti con più entusiasmo?
Adoro suonare al Womb, a Tokyo. L’atmosfera è imbattibile ed è davvero uno dei miei locali preferiti. Oltre al Womb, amo tornare a Maidstone. E’ sempre bello avere tutti i tuoi amici a 10 minuti da casa tua. In estate faremo anche il secondo party Saved al Ministry of Sound, ci sarà da divertirsi.
Quando stai suonando in club, cerchi di calibrare il tuo set in base al pubblico?
Credo che essere in grado di capire il pubblico e dargli quello che vuole sia uno degli aspetti fondamentali del mio lavoro. Certo qualcuno potrà obbiettare che tecnologie come Traktor Pro rendono molto più semplice diventare un dj, quello che rimane basilare è saper muovere qualsiasi pista. In fin dei conti tu sei lì per farli divertire!
Secondo te, qual è il paese con il pubblico migliore?
E’ davvero difficile rispondere. Quello del Womb è un gran pubblico, posso suonare qualsiasi genere. Più sperimento, meglio rispondono. Anche molti locali negli Stati Uniti hanno una bella clientela. In tutta sincerità però, non saprei scegliere un paese in particolare. Ho incontrato in tutto il mondo pubblici fantastici.
Come procede con la tua label Saved? Ho notato che state aggiornando la sezione artisti del sito internet. Qualche cambiamento in arrivo?
Non seguiamo una regola precisa per decidere chi pubblicheremo, quindi quella sezione è sempre così, troverete semplicemente una foto degli artisti che abbiamo stampato in passato. Aspettatevi release di Alex Tepper, Subb-an, Mark Fanciulli, &Me, Clio, Andrea Oliva e Robert Dietz, tutti in uscita su Saved quest’estate. Pubblicherò anche un mio remake di “Don’t Laugh” di Josh Wink. Il nostro obbiettivo è quello di aiutare i nuovi artisti che sono approdati su Saved, non solo a far uscire la loro musica, ma cercando di coinvolgerli sempre di più in tutti i processi. Ragazzi come Clio, &ME e Andrea Oliva, stanno producendo brani fantastici ed è davvero appagante lavorare con loro aiutandoli a far decollare le loro carriere come produttori e dj.
Al giorno d’oggi i social media giocano un ruolo chiave nelle promozione musicale. Quanto sono importanti per te?
La maggior parte dei ragazzi che compra la nostra musica e ci segue utilizza facebook, twitter e altri social network, quindi è fondamentale essere presenti anche lì. Inoltre è un sistema facile ed efficace per tenerci in contatto con i fan, aggiornandoli sulle date, novità e su tutto quello che riguarda la label.
Hai mixato Balance 021, uscito il 7 maggio. Mi ha incuriosito leggere che hai pensato il mix in modo che tra dieci anni possa risultare ancora attuale. Raccontaci qualcosa in più, come hai scelto le tracce?
Quando preparo una compilation cerco sempre di realizzare qualcosa che non venga dimenticato e che rimanga nel tempo. E’ fondamentale mantenere un certo livello e credo che artisti come Rolando offrano un ottimo esempio. Le sue selezioni sono suonano in modo grandioso e sono attuali anche se sono state mixate anni fa. Con il secondo cd invece volevamo far conoscere gli artisti di Saved. Ci sono tracce asclusive di Alex Tepper, Robert Dietz e Paul Ritch, per citarne alcuni. Rispetto al primo, questo è pensato più per la dance floor. Le tracce scelte son il risultato di un processo che potrei definire di “prova e miglioramento”. Siamo partiti con un numero elevato, per poi restringere vertiginosamente l’elenco. Passo dopo passo rimuovevamo qualcosa e alla fine ce l’abbiamo fatta!
Hai fatto tantissimi remix. Cosa ci diresti se ti chiedessimo di scegliere i tuoi preferiti?
Direi che ce ne sono due che mi piacciono in maniera particolare. Il primo è un remix che ho fatto per Tiefschwarz per il quale ho ricevuto una nomination ai Grammy, l’altro invece è quello di Chiapet – Westworld che suono da ormai 8 anni.

Nic Fanciulli is one of the biggest names in the English landscape. DJ and producer, behind more than 10 year career, collaborations prestigious, world tours and a Grammy nomination. Since 2005 he successfully manages Saved Records, publishing and promoting artists like Robert Dietz and Andrea Oliva, to name a few. At Soundwall tells of his tour, the label and released the DJ mix for Balance.
Hi Nic, welcome on Soundwall. Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. How are things?
Everything is great thanks. I’m just half way through my tour of Asia for my Balance Compilation.
You’re from Maidstone. How was the club scene there when you started? Has it affected somehow your music?
Maidstone has always had a healthy club scene, I started playing there when I was very young and was offered a residency at a local club playing alongside some of the biggest DJ’s of the time. What we’ve tried to do now with the Saved parties is develop this scene further; we try to give something back to the people of Maidstone as they’ve always been so supportive of the label and so we bring artists that they usually wouldn’t see in their hometown. Our next party is with Luciano on 6th May which should be fun!
How does Nic Fanciulli work in the studio? Is there any artist you’d like to share your studio with in the future?
There is no set rule when it comes to the studio for me. Ideas mostly come from being on the road and then taken back to be developed in the studio. That’s the great thing with technology nowadays. Most of my collaborations have been done over the internet where we send files back and forth until we both are happy. From a DJ point of view, I would love to collaborate with Laurent Garnier; for vocalists it would have to be either Beth Gibbons or Sia.
Speaking about your sound, can you give us 3 adjectives to describe it?
Groovy, melodic and intresting!
I see you’re touring right now. What dates are you looking forward to the most? Do you remember your first gig?
I always look forward to playing Womb in Tokyo. The vibe is just unbeatable and it really is one of my favourite clubs in the world. Other than that I always love coming to my hometown and playing there as it’s great having all your friends around you 10 minutes from your house! We also have our second Saved show at Ministry of Sound in London coming in the summer which will of course be a lot of fun!
When you’re playing in a club, do you try to adapt and shape your set to the crowd or do you just do your thing?
I think it’s one of the vital aspects of being a DJ, to be able to adapt and respond to the crowd. People can have the argument that technology such as Traktor Pro is making it too easy to be a DJ, but there’s still a skill in being able to move a really tough crowd and tailoring your set to the right audience. This is the most important part of being a DJ. I think at the end of the day, you’re there to entertain!
In your view, which country has the most responsive crowd?
That’s really hard to say. Again, though – Womb, in Tokyo has a really responsive crowd. I get to play all types of music there and the crowd is always so responsive there when you are more adventurous with what you play. More and more clubs in the USA are starting to have great crowds as well. But in all honesty, it’s too hard to put a finger on which country is the best though, I get to play to so many amazing audiences around the world.
What’s going on with Saved at the moment? I’ve noticed the artists section of the website is currently under construction.
It always has been. There’s no set rule to who we release so that’s why it’s just a picture of all the previous artists. At the moment there is great talent coming through like Alex Tepper , Subb-An, Mark Fanciulli, &Me, Clio, Andrea Olivia and Robert Dietz. They all have singles coming out on Saved over the summer. I’ve also just done a remake of Josh Wink’s ‘Dont Laugh’ which will be out on saved too.
How will it change?
Our aim is to start supporting the upcoming artists we have on the label more and more. It’s all well and good releasing their music, but we really want to make the effort to become part of the process more and more. Young artists like Clio, &ME and Andrea Oliva are producing some amazing music and it’s really great to be involved with them and to help shape their careers as DJ’s/producers. That is the most rewarding thing.
Nowadays, online interaction is very important for all businesses. In your opinion, what role do social media play in promoting your music?
Social media is so important these days. The majority of the kids that buy and support our music will have facebook/twitter etc etc so it’s really important to have a presence on there I think as far as the label goes. It’s also an easy and effective way of keeping your existing fans up to date with what’s going on with the label etc.
You’ve mixed the Balance 021, which is set to be released on May 7th. What’s caught my attention was reading that “you approached the mix to make it sound as good in ten years as it does today”. Can you tell us something more about it? Also, how did you choose the tracks?
My aim with any compilation was to make something that really stands the test of time. It’s so important to remain relevant and I think artists like Rolando really nailed it with their compilations as they still sound really relevant and amazing today as they did when they first came out. His compilations were kind of my benchmark. With the second CD we also wanted to showcase the artists on the label like Alex Tepper, Robert Dietz, Paul Ritch etc. with some exclusive material as a thank you to the fans. The second disc was also a chance bring a mix that was more relevant to the dance floor. Choosing the tracks was a very long process of trial and error, or should I say trial and improvement. We started off with so many, then just had to be really ruthless with which ones we kept in. The number of tracks was reduced stage by stage. Eventually we got there!
You’ve done plenty of remixes. What if we ask you to pick a few of your favourites?
I think there are 2 that stand out for me. The remix I did for Tiefschwarz which we ended up getting a Grammy nomination for & the remix of Chiapet – Westworld which I still play 8 years on. They would have to be the pick of my remixes I think.
