In occasione del lancio del suo ultimo EP sull’etichetta losangelina Pleasure of Love, siamo andati a conoscere Larry Quest, enigmatico produttore francese di base a Lisbona. Se con le precedenti uscite su Delusions Of Grandeur, Percebes e Shades Of Sound ci aveva sorpresi, “Rear Light EP” è la conferma del talento del parigino, a metà tra una famiglia di musicisti illustri e la ricerca di una propria identità, lontano da casa.

Partiamo parlando un po’ de te, chi è Larry Quest?
Sono un produttore e arrangiatore piuttosto eclettico di musica House. Sono nato in Francia, ho lasciato casa per andare a Londra a 20 anni, volevo esplorare e conoscere meglio la scena elettronica locale. Dopo quasi un decennio, ho deciso di continuare la mia ricerca a Lisbona tramite la scena portoghese.
Come descriveresti il tuo suono?
Ho preso lezioni di danza e ballato durante la maggior parte della mia infanzia, questo mi ha naturalmente portato ad una produzione musicale guidata dal ritmo e dal movimento. Ho anche studiato piano classico e arrangiamento Jazz. Il mio sound è decisamente influenzato da quel tocco jazzistico degli UK Breaks, mi piace pensarlo come la mia libera interpretazione della musica House di Detroit, con la quale ho un forte legame. Detto questo, amo esplorare possibili connessioni con altri tipi di musica House usando tecniche di arrangiamento creativo.
Cosa ti ha avvicinato alla musica elettronica?
Stavo scoprendo le infinite possibilità di arrangiamento usando texture, rumore e ritmo. Crescendo ascoltavo Björk, Portishead o Radiohead che sono stati tutti pionieri nell’integrare il sound design e i soundscape come parte dei loro arrangiamenti, e ne sono sempre stato affascinato. Dopo di che ho scoperto il mondo delle feste nei basement industriali, dove ho trovato la mia comunità e il suono associato a quei momenti felici.
Qual è il tema principale dietro il tuo prossimo EP?
È una versione giocosa e retrò della US House, un tributo al suono di Masters At Work, Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, Robert Hood per citarne alcuni, con un tocco Jazz che viene dagli UK Breaks.
Quali sono le tue principali fonti di ispirazione?
Amo guardare le persone che ballano, spensierate nella forma più primitiva di espressione corporea. Mi ispiro anche alla visione dei miei colleghi e delle persone con cui lavoro, spingendo sempre la passione per la musica. Sono anche il più giovane di una famiglia di quattro fratelli, tutti appassionati di musica. Gran parte della mia ispirazione viene dal loro talento, passione e guida mentre stavo crescendo.
Com’è la scena a Lisbona? Soprattutto rispetto a Londra o Parigi.
La scena a Lisbona è ricca e diversificata, ben integrata con le altre scene creative. Succedono molte cose grazie alle associazioni e ai collettivi culturali che sono un po’ come dei guardiani del patrimonio culturale portoghese: tutti possono esprimersi in qualsiasi forma e c’è rispetto, tempo e spazio per farlo.
Cos’altro possiamo aspettarci da LQ in futuro?
Un live set nuovo di zecca con le macchine, penso a partire da settembre, e soprattutto tante altre tracce!

First of all tell us a bit about yourself, who is Larry Quest?
I’m a rather eclectic House music producer and arranger. Born in France, I left home for London (UK) in my 20s to explore and study the electronic music scene. After nearly a decade, I decided to carry on my exploration from Lisbon and through the Portuguese scene.
How would you describe your sound?
I used to dance and take classes for most of my childhood, so my music production is led by rhythm and movement. I also have Classical piano upbringing and Jazz arrangement training. My sound is definitely tinted by that jazzy UK Breaks touch, and I like to think of it as my free interpretation of the Detroit House music, which I feel a strong connection with. That said, I love to explore possible connections with other kinds of House music through creative arrangement techniques.
What brought you into electronic music?
I guess it was discovering the endless possibilities of arrangements using textures, noise and rhythm. Growing up I would listen to Björk, Portishead or Radiohead that were all pioneers in integrating sound production and soundscape as part of their arrangement, and I’ve always been fascinated by that. After that I discovered the world of underground warehouse parties where I found my community and the sound associated with those blissful moments.
What’s the main concept behind your upcoming ep?
It’s a playful take on retro US House, a tribute to the sound of Masters At Work, Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, Robert Hood to name a few, with a jazzy UK Breaks twist.
What are your main sources of inspiration?
I love looking at people dancing, carefree and in the simplest forms of expression through their body. I am inspired as well by the vision of my peers and the people I work with, promoting strong passion for music. I’m also the youngest of a four brothers family, who are all deep into music, and a big part of my inspiration comes from their talent, passion and tutoring when I was growing up.
How is the scene in Lisbon? Particularly when compared to London or Paris.
The scene in Lisbon is rich and diverse, well versed with the other creative scenes. There is a lot happening thanks to cultural associations and collectives that act as guardians to the Portuguese cultural heritage : everyone can express themselves in any shape or form, and there is respect, time and space for that.
What else can we expect from LQ in the future?
A brand new live set with machines on stage from September, and a lot more tracks!
