Bristoliano legato al dubstep e dj affermato di slow house, Hodge ci racconta le sue sensazioni a proposito di musica, fatta e suonata, di collaborazioni e di contaminazioni. Pronto per l’Echo Festival di Kanega, in Croazia, il giovane dj e produttore racconta anche della città, Bristol, che lo ha fatto innamorare della musica.
Ciao Martin, stai per esibirti all’Echo Festival, a Kanegra, Croazia, e sei tra i giovani musicisti emergenti sui quali la direzione del festival ha deciso di puntare. Come ti stai preparando?
Sono davvero entusiasta di poter suonare all’Echo Festival, la line up è grandiosa e ci saranno un sacco di amici quindi penso che ci sarà un’atmosfera davvero bella. Mi sto preparando acquistando altri vinili, come al solito.
La prima edizione dell’Echo Festival ha riscosso un enorme successo e questa seconda punta ad esserlo ancora di più. Ti piace suonare ai festival in compagnia di altri artisti?
Sì, certamente. Sono particolarmente felice di vedere all’Echo alcuni altri ragazzi suonare: Kassem Mosse, Andrès, Madteo… abbiamo suonato durante un set Outboxx con Fred P per l’Echo Warm Up ed è stato incredibile, sono davvero felice di vederlo di nuovo e October è uno dei miei dj preferiti. Quando l’ho visto suonare all’Hush House di Leeds sono stato completamente catturato, il ragazzo ha talento per quello che fa.
È uscito da poco il tuo primo EP, Dusted: raccontaci le tue sensazioni.
Sono davvero contento di come sia andata, ha ricevuto il sostegno di alcuni dei miei artisti preferiti e li ho sentiti suonare il mio disco un paio di volte, il che significa un sacco! Questo lavoro è stato un ottimo modo per tirare fuori alcuni aspetti più oscuri della musica che amo scrivere, e penso il remix di Kowtons sia una droga.
Con Pev (a.k.a. Peverlist) hai collaborato a Bells. Siete entrambi di Bristol, come è stato lavorare insieme?
Lavorare con Pev è stato incredibile, lui è un ragazzo paziente e io invece no, quindi sento di aver imparato moltissimo lavorando con lui. Lui ha la capacità di ascoltare qualcosa più e più volte e controllarsi quando io invece mi sto già annoiando: è impressionante. Punch Drunk ha pubblicato molta della mia musica preferita quindi essere prodotto da loro è veramente molto bello.
Con Matthew Lambert, altro bristoliano, hai dato vita al progetto Outboxx e da pochissimo è uscito il vostro primo album eponimo. Sei soddisfatto dei primi riscontri?
Sì, davvero soddisfatto del feedback. Fare musica con Matt è davvero divertente e mi dà la possibilità di esplorare un lato più “musicale” delle cose. Lavoriamo continuamente sui set live, ed è molto stimolante, sempre cercando di sviluppare e migliorare.
Bristol ha una lunga e solida tradizione musicale in continuo fermento. Quanto credi abbia influenzato i tuoi gusti musicali? E come?
Penso che Bristol abbia davvero influenzato il mio gusto musicale. La prima volta che sono arrivato in città, sono stato avvolto dalla musica e il fatto che tutti siano così disponibili rende la città un luogo ideale per mettersi in gioco con la musica. Penso che una cosa bella di Bristol sia la possibilità di poter ascoltare molti tipi di musica incredibili da cui lasciarsi ispirare. Ad esempio come le ovvie ispirazioni che prendo dalla house e dalla techno, ci sono ragazzi come Dubkasm, Gorgonie e Peng Sound che fanno cose incredibili e che recentemente hanno avuto una grande influenza su di me in termini di approccio al doppiaggio delle tracce, etc.
Dove sta andando la musica, secondo te, in questi anni? Che generi di contaminazioni prevedi?
Impossibile dirlo, a me piacciono molti generi di musica quindi il fatto che questa cambi e si sviluppi molto rapidamente mi piace. Spero che dal momento che incollare un bpm sta diventando sempre più irrilevante, la musica continui a diventare sempre più interessante.
Se non avessi iniziato a suonare, cosa ti sarebbe piaciuto fare?
Non ne ho idea… sono una persona socievole quindi qualcosa che ha a che fare con le persone, forse qualche tipo di lavoro con i giovani?
Quali progetti hai in serbo per il prossimo futuro?
Il mio prossimo lavoro è per Well Rounded che mi ha dato la possibilità di fare un pò di musica diversa, che non è destinata direttamente al dancefloor, ed è stata davvero una gran opportunità… Ho anche remixato Ishan Sound per l’etichetta discografica Peng Sound con Kahn e sono davvero molto felice!

Hello Jacob, you’re about to perform at the Echo Festival, in Kanegra, Croatia, and you’re among emerging young musicians upon which the artistic direction decided to bet. How are you preparing?
I’m really excited to be playing at Echo Festival, the line ups great and loads of friends will be there so I think it will be a real nice vibe. Preparing by buying more vinyl as usual.
The first edition of the Echo Festival was a huge success and this second tip to be even more. Do you like playing at festivals in the company of other artists?
Yeah of course. At Echo I’m particularly excited to see some of the other guys playing: Kassem Mosse, Andres, Madteo… we played an Outboxx set with Fred P for the Echo Warm up and he was incredible so really excited to see him again and October is one of my favourite dj’s. When I saw him play Hush House in Leeds I was blown away, the guy has such a talent for what he does.
You recently released your debut EP, Dusted: share your feelings.
I’m really happy with how this release went, it’s received support from some of my favourite artists and I’ve heard them playing it out a few times too which means a lot! This release was a cool place to export some of my darker music which I love writing and I think Kowtons remix is dope.
With Pev (a.k.a. Peverlist) have collaborated on Bells. You are both of Bristol: how was it like working together?
Working with Pev was amazing, he’s a patient guy and I’m not so I feel like I learnt a great deal working with him. He has the ability to listen to something over and over again and just gain direction where I get bored its impressive. Punch Drunk has always released some of my favourite music so being involved with the label feels really good.
With Matthew Lambert, another bristolian, you gave life to the Outboxx project, and very little came out your first eponymous album. Are you happy with early feedback?
Yeah really happy with the feedback. Making music with Matt is really fun and gives me the chance to explore a more “musical” side of things. We are continuously working on the live set too which is exciting, constantly trying to develop and improve it.
Bristol has a long and proud tradition of music in continuous turmoil. How much do you think has influenced your taste in music? And how?
I think Bristol has really influenced my taste in music. When I first got to the City I was blown away with the music and the fact that everyone is so approachable makes the city a great place to get involved with music. I think the great thing about Bristol is its not just one type of music there you have a wide range of incredible music to take influence from. For example as well as the obvious inspirations I take from house and techno guys there are people like Dubkasm, Gorgon Sound and Peng Sound doing amazing things which recently has been a big influence on me in terms of their approach to dubbing out tracks etc.
Where the music is going, according to you, in these years? What kinds of continuation you plan?
Impossible to say, I like a big range of music so the fact that music changes and develops quite rapidly suits me well. Hopefully as sticking to a bpm becomes more and more irrelevant music will continue to get more and more interesting.
If you hadn’t started playing music, what you’d like to do?
No idea… I’m a social person so something with people, maybe some youth work type thing?
What projects do you have in store for the near future?
My next release is on Well Rounded which gave me a chance to make some different music which was not aimed so heavily at the dance floor and that was a really cool opportunity to have, I’ve also remixed Ishan sound for the Peng Sound record label with Kahn on the flip which I’m really happy with!
