Scrivo e riascolto il suo recente Boiler Room. Impossibile non riprovare dei brividi lunga la schiena: è un’onda ipnotica ed multiforme quella che Daniel Ansorge, in arte Barnt, cavalca sempre sicuro e disinvolto; così solo poche tracce ed una manciata di EP gli sono bastati per posizionare lui e la Magazine, di diritto tra le sonorità più innovative ed interessanti del momento. Le sue non sono canzonette: le linee si rincorrono nell’aria, quasi come parti d’intricate composizioni Dada, ed ogni weekend, le loro battute “immixabili” mettono a dura prova le capacità dei “coraggiosi” dj’s che girano con i suoi vinili nel case. Ci vuole orecchio e cuore. Erano ancora i primi ’90s quando spulciava tra i dischi del record shop locale nei pomeriggi di un’annoiata cittadina tedesca vicino alle sponde baltiche. Oggi, qualunque appassionato di clubbing, si ricorda quando ha sentito “Geffen” per la prima volta e (forse), pur domandandosi di che diavolo si trattasse, ha lanciato uno sguardo d’intesa al vicino di dancefloor, continuando poi a ballare ad occhi chiusi. Come dicevo: non sono solo canzonette.
Ciao Daniel, come stai? Dove ti trovi adesso?
Fantasticamente grazie. Scrivo da Colonia, in Germania. Ho suonato un paio di weekend fa il mio primo set in Italia, a Gualdo, vicino a Ferrara. Lorenzo de Blanck mi inviato a suonare alla sua serata “Simple” al Suono. Il club sembra come construito nel bel mezzo del nulla. Una struttura solitaria alla fine di una strada stretta vicino al bosco. É stato incredibile!
Nel tuo singolo “Tunsten” si riconosce il tuo suono ipnotico ed inconfondibile che unisce un’atmosfera cosmic-kraut a linee minimali particolarmente dissonanti, stranianti e teatrali, quasi da colonna sonora horror alla Dario Argento/Goblin… Può essere il mood di partenzada cui crei le tue produzioni? E se non lì da dove parti?
Goblin, Fabio Frizzi, adoro le loro composizioni. Ma nella mia testa non sono predominanti quando incomincio a lavorare su una traccia. Credo che il risultato finirebbe per diventare solo una copia di questi talentuosi musicisti italiani. Quando mi sono messo d’ impegno su Tungsten ci tenevo che il risultato fosse quaclosa che si notasse, che potesse dare alle persone quella sensazione di non averla mai ascoltata prima in un club. Allo stesso tempo però volevo che fosse diretta e spontanea.
“Geffen” è stata la traccia che ti ha messo più in luce a livello internazionale nonostante te sia attivo da alcunianni con produzioni di altissima qualità. Come credi funzionino le dinamiche legate al “successo” nella musica techno o elettronica in generale… vale sempre la regola essere al posto giusto nel momento giusto?
Molte persone mi hanno raccontato dove si trovavano e come si sentirono quando hanno ascoltato “Geffen” per la prima volta. Ne sono stato molto felice e sorpreso. Non sono sicuro che una traccia come questa per raggiungere questi risultati sia necessariamente dovuta nascere in Germania nel 2012. Preferisco pensare che ha un suo posto nella musica. Le ottave, la linee di batteria. Quello che mi ha in qualche maniera aiutato è il fatto che alcuni dj non hanno visto l’ora di suoanla fin dall’inizio, ancora prima che uscisse. Amici come Dixon, per esempio, che ha comunque suonato altre mie traccie prima che venissero prodotte. Per concludere, credo che il caso sia uno degli altri fattori. Credo di aver ricevuto più feedback per Tunsten che per Geffen, ma non lo stesso numero di dj hanno optato per questa invece che la seconda. Probabilmente perchè questa ultima uscita é traccia più complicata da mixare.
Mi incuriosisce molto il progetto/etichetta che hai creato con due altri dj/producer di Colonia:JJens-Uwe Beyer e Crato. Siete agli inizi, ma avete già fatto molto parlare di voi e la mia sensazione é che, oltre a produrre musica di qualità in edizione limitata, vogliate espandervi verso orizzonti più ampi di quelli musicali… Potesti descriverci meglio l’universo che ruota intorno a Magazine?
Tutti noi siamo sia musicisti che artisti visuali. Non vogliamo che Magazine sia limitatamente votato solo alla musica. Per esempio, avendo un forte interesse per gli archivi, abbiamo deciso di usare le cover delle prime 10 uscite come spazio di presentazione dove poter mostrare 10 composizioni di immagini scelti dalle nostre raccolte oppure scannerizzate. Abbiamo piani che vanno oltre la musica, ma per il momento è ancora presto per ufficializzare qualcosa.
Altro progetto collettivo,di cui fai parte è Cologne Tape, un super gruppo direi: oltre a te, Axel Willner aka The Field, John Stanier, batterista dei Battles, Jens-Uwe Beyer aka Popnoname, Michaela Dippel aka Ada, Jorg Burger aka The Modernist, Philippe Janzen aka Von Spar, Volker Pannes aka Deeppulse e John Harten. Elementi dal background diverso,ma uniti dalla stessa passione musicale. “Render” il vostro album dimostra tutta la forza del collettivo, la sua innovativa eccletticità e equilibrata natura improvvisativa. Era il 2010, avete nuove uscite o progetti in arrivo?
Ad oggi La struttura portante di Cologne tape siamo Jens-Uwe Beyer, Crato, Ada,Jörg Burger, Philipp Janzen of Von Spar, Mario Katz, Axel Willner e io. Di tanto in tanto ci incontriamo nello studio di Von Spar qui a Colonia divertendoci molto. A dire la verità ci siamo ritrovati proprio lo scorso mese. Suonare insieme dal vivo e decisamente più importante per noi che pubblicarne i risultati su un disco. Ma al momento abbiamo talmente tanto materiale che credo che sia arrivato il tempo di far uscire delle release.
Non ho trovato informazioni riguardo il tuo background musicale e come è avvenuto il tuo primo contatto con la musica elettronica. Sono curioso. Potresti raccontarcelo?
È stato intorno al 1993/94. Per esempio Mi ero immediatamente innamorato degli Altern 8. Ma quando ho sentito per la prima volta della Chicago house, mi ci è voluto un nel pò per capire quanto si servissero di sample campionati dalle primissime traccie in stile Chicago. Ripensandoci, non riuscivo a capire come la loro musica potesse già citare qualcos’altro. Nonostante si potesse chiaramente sentire che era un tipo di musica basata sull uso di sample, suoanava così innovativa… Nessuna radio avrebbe mai potuto suonare qualcosa di simile nella una piccola città vicino al Baltico come Kiel, da dove provengo. Non avevo nessun tipo di scambio con altri ragazzi della mai scuola o altro. Ero talmente giovane e in quel periodo quasi tutti i miei amici ascoltavano grunge. Cosi incomincia a passare interi pomeriggi nel negozio di dischi della zona. È li che ho conosciuto la Warp, Plastikman, gli Undergrund Resistance, Basic Channel, ma anche cose più pop tipo Felix da Housecat – “Don’t You Want Me”. Uno dei commesi più anziani del negozio amava farmi sentire ogni genere di musica elettronica, esssendo particolarmente felice che qualcuno della mia età ne fosse interessato.
Alcuni dj’s, una volta raggiunta una certa popolarità ed un buon numero di date nei loro tour, a volte faticano a ritagliare dello spazio utile per il lavoro in studio, arrivando quasi a rimpiangere i momenti quando erano meno conosciuti e liberi di dedicarsi più continuativamente alla produzione. Per te è lo stesso?
Adoro fare il dj. Quindi, senza ombra di dubbio, posso dire che non lo rimpiangerò mai. Al momento, per come lo faccio, mi rimane ancora abbastanza tempo per produrre; non sono infatti il tipo di producer che lavora in studio dalle 9 di mattina alle 5 di sera con la speranza che ne esca qualcosa. Rischierebbe di succhiarmi tutte le energie. In qualche maniera lavoro al contrario: faccio sentire ad altri le mie traccie, assoervando che reazioni hanno e studiando a fondo come possono poi suonare con un buon (o cattivo) impianto, mi aiuta a capire dove voglio poi arrivare.
Creativamente ti esprimi sia a livello musicale che visivamente. Come questi processi si influenzano reciprocamente?
Cerco di evitare delle interferenzesuperflue, in quanto i lavori rischierebbero quindi di risultare troppo schematici ed astratti. Credo che dipenda molto dai diversi stati d’animo in cui ti trovi quando ti rapporti a diverse cose che mi ha aiutato a capire più facilmente la specificità di ciascun mezzo.
Ho notato che i tuoi dj set sono caratterizzati da una carica trascinante ed ipnotica, ma dalle sonorità a tratti molto dissonanti e dalle ritmiche atipiche, molto varie e complesse. Hai mai incontrato difficoltà “a farti capire” dal pubblico?
Quando suono come dj cerco anche di ascoltarmi. Voglio sorprendermi e creare una sorta di viaggio. Credo che molti dj là fuori limitino troppo il loro stile; suonano o hard o pop o underground, etc.. Per quanto mi riguarda ci devono essere tutti questi diverse sfumature. La dolcezza, l’aggressività, i pattern complicati come le ritmiche semplici, l’allegria e la tragedia. Ma più includi, più importante diventa scegliere: 1 cosa suoni, 2 in che momento lo suoni, 3 come carichi i passaggi di pathos emotivo. Se funziona puoi suonare le traccia più assurde insieme con le hits più famose. Credo che questo tipo di approccio al mixaggio sia più spontaneo, perchè chi balla, durante una serata, non é solo tristeo solo euforico, non solo arabbiato o solo felice. Per mia esperienza personale, credo che il pubblico capisca più facilmente set come questi, perchè ti raggiongono senza che te sia necessarmanete un esperto. A volte richiede del tempo per arrivarci, ma nel complesso sono felice della rispota che ho dal dancefloor.
Un’artista o degli artisti che consideri come tuo punto di riferimento creativo e perché?
Ce ne sono molti, e cambiano, mi viene difficile dire un solo nome.

Writing and re-listening his recent performance at Boiler Room re-get me goosebumps: Daniel Ansorge, aka Bart, is constantly and confidently riding multishaped hypnowaves; so just a bunch of tracks and few Ep’s already put himself and his label Magazine under the spotlight, and now, by right, among the most innovative, fresh and interesting sound in electronic music. These are’t for sure cheesy songs: their lines run after each other in the air almost as complex as Dada compositions, and moreover, each weekend with their “un-mixable” beats make a tough life for every dj, who bravely carry some Barnt’s records in the case. A good earing and heart is all you need then. It was the beginning of 90’s when he was digging records in the local shop during several boring afternoon in his small German town near the Baltic Sea. Nowadays, every clubbing lover still remembers when he first listens to “Geffen” and (maybe), despite wondering himself what the hell was that track, he gave a knowing look to the nearby dancefloor mate, then he kept on dancing with his eyes closed. As I said before: these are not just cheesy song.
Hello Daniel, how’re you doing? Where are you at the moment?
Brilliant thanks. Writing this from Cologne, Germany right now. I actually just played my first set in Italy 2 weekends ago. That was in Gualdo near Ferrara. Lorenzo De Blanck had invited me to his night Simple at Suono. The club seems to be in the middle of nowhere. Asolitary building at the end of a small road next to a grove. It wasreally great!
I’ve just discovered a video where Optimo and Move D play B2B your forthcoming release “Tunsten”: I could hear you hypnotic and unique sound which always connect a cosmic-kraut atmosphere to minimal lines, all the time very dissonant, alienating and theatrical, almost a Goblin/Dario Argento kind of soundtrack… Could be this the mood from where you create your tracks? If not there, from where you actually start?
Goblin, Fabio Frizzi… I love a lot of their compositions. But they are not predominantly in my head when I start to do a track. I suppose then my result would be sounding like a copy of this great Italian
musicians. When I came up with “Tunsten” I wanted the outcome to be something which stands out and makes people feel that they haven’t heard it in a club before. At the same time I wanted it to come across as being direct and natural.
“Geffen” has been the track which internationally put you in the spotlight, despite you are already producing very interesting works since few years. How you personally think success’ dynamics work in techno and electronic music? Being in the right place at the right time still matter?
A lot of people told me where they were and how they felt, when they heard Geffen for the first time. I was really happy and surprised by this. I am not sure if Geffen had to emerge from Germany and in 2012 in order to have this impact. I want to think that it is just in the music. The octaves, the drums. What likely also helped was, that some DJs I really look up to started playing it quite early, even before itwas out. Folks like Dixon for example. But then he had also played my other tracks before. In the end I think chance is also a factor. I seem to have gotten more feedback for “Tunsten” than “Geffen” in my own sets. But not as many DJs seem to have picked up the track as it was with Geffen. Maybe that is partly due to the fact that it is a harder track to mix.
I’m very interested about your project/label you create with two other producers from Cologne: JJens-Uwe Beyer and Crato. You are just at the beginning, but you are often been talked about, and my feeling is you want to go beyond producing limited series of quality music, broadening your artistic horizons to other fields… Can you better describe the universe around Magazine?
We are all musicians and visual artists at the same time. We don’t want to limit Magazine to a vehicle for only just music. We have a strong interest in archives for instance so we decided to use the covers of the 10 first releases as presentation space where we could display 10 arrangements of pictures from our archive of self scanned pictures. There are plans for more things other than music for Magazine. But it is too early to say anything official at this point.
Another collective project, or better saying, a “supergroup” you are part of, is Cologne Tape: you collaborate with Axel Willner aka The Field, John Stanier, Battles’s Drummer, Jens-Uwe Beyer aka Popnoname, Michaela Dippel aka Ada, Jorg Burger aka The Modernist, Philippe Janzen aka Von Spar, Volker Pannes aka Deeppulse and John Harten. Artists with different backgrounds get together by the same music passion. “Render”, the album, shows your potential as a collective and your multifaceted, forwarding and balanced improvisative nature. This was 2010, do you have new releases or projects about to come?
The core of Cologne Tape these days is Jens-Uwe Beyer, Crato, Ada, Jörg Burger, Philipp Janzen of Von Spar, Mario Katz, Axel Willner and me. We meet from time totime and have a lot of fun in Von Spar’sstudio here in Cologne. We actually just got together again last month. Performing live together is actually more important to us than putting out the results on a record. But then again we have so much material now it’s about time we start releasing it.
I couldn’t find much information about your musical background and how you first came in contact with electronic music. I’m curious. Could you tell us something about it?
This was around 1993/94. I instantly loved Altern 8 for example. Butwhen I first heard of Chicago house, it took me some time to get how much they sampled from the early Chicago tracks. Back then, I couldn’t get over the fact that their music was already referencing something. Despite the fact that you could of course clearly hear that this music was sample based it sounded so new it to me… No radio station would play this in the small German city Kiel by the Baltic Sea, where I come from. I had no real exchange with other people from my school or so. I was too young and nearly all of my friends were into Grunge at the time. So I started to spent a lot ofthe afternoons in the local record shop. There I got into Warp, Plastikman, Underground Resistance, Basic Channel. Also more poppy stuff like Felix’s “Don’t You Want Me”. One of the older clerks at the record store always loved to play me all sorts of different electronic music because he was happy that someone my age was interested.
Once reached a certain popularity, touring around the world, some dj’s hardly find quality time to dedicate to their studio sessions, then regretting the moments when they were unpopular but free to fully concentrate on production without any interruptions. For you is the same?
I love to dj. There I can say that in no way say do I ever regret it. I still have enough time for producing right now because of the way I do it. I am not the type of producer that works from 9 to 5 in a studio with the hope of coming out with something in the end. That would completely drain me. It’s quite the opposite effect actually… I play tracks to other people, see how they react and taking in how things sound on good (or bad…) sound systems helps me to know and feel what I want to do next.
From a creative point of view, you express yourself both musically and visually. How this processes influence each other?
I try to avoid simple interferences because they can result in worksthat come out too schematic and abstract. I feel that it reallydepends on the different states of mind one is in when doing different things that helps come up with those special elements more easily.
I noticed your dj set are characterized but an hypnotic driving force, which quite often become very dissonant and structured by peculiar, varied and complex rhythmical line. Do you ever have problem to “let yourself understand” by the crowd on the dancefloor?
When I dj I try also to be a listener. I want to be surprised and create a journey. I think that many of the DJs out there seem to narrow their style to too few parameters. They play either hard or poppy or underground, etc.For me it has to be all in there. The tenderness, the brutality. Complex rhythms, simple patterns. Fun and tragedy. But the more you include, the more important it is to decide, 1) what you play 2) at what point you play it and 3) that you interweave the tracks with a sense for drama. If it works out, you can play the oddest tracks next to the biggest hits. I believe that such an approach to Djing is more natural. Because the dancers are also not only just in a sad mood or in a humorous mindset, they are not only angry or happy over the way a night goes. My experience is that most people often can quite easily understand sets like this, because they feel it, without being an expert about it. Sometimes it takes time to get there but I am very happy overall with the response that I have had from the dancefloor.
Do you have an artist or more the one you consider as main creative inspiration? And why?
There is not one, but many. And it changes. I can’t possibly just name one.
