Solo a poche ore di distanza dal suo primo dj set in quel del Muretto di Jesolo, David James Wolstencroft aka Trus’me ha trovato un po’ di tempo per rispondere al volo alle domande di Soundwall e raccontare qualcosa della sua discografia, del suo rapporto con l’Italia e della sua label Prime Numbers. Seguiteci in questa chiacchierata.
Il tuo più recente album “Treat Me Right” rappresenta una specie di inversione ad u se paragonato ai tuoi precedenti, specialmente al secondo “In The Red”. Ho l’impressione che con i nuovi pezzi hai principalmente mirato ai dancefloors.
Musicalmente il mio atteggiamento mentale è sempre andato al di fuori dei confini prefissati, così per me, sia come produttore che come dj, non c’è distinzione tra house e techno. Ho scelto di uscire dagli schemi con le idee musicali che avevo in testa al momento, il che significa che durante i miei inizi si trattava principalmente soul, jazz e disco. Più tardi, con “In The Red”, ho cercato di progredire come produttore, lavorando con musicisti dal vivo e su produzioni più basate sulla forma canzone. Una volta che si è passati anche attraverso questo processo si sono imparate tecniche che ho successivamente usato per circondarmi esclusivamente di macchine e lavorare in autonomia. Si puó dire che “Treat Me Right” sia una conseguenza della mia intensa attività di dj. Con questo disco ho voluto realizzare delle tracce da incorporare nei miei sets ma che si possano anche ascoltare a casa, e questo è ciò che musicalmente faccio anche con la mia label Prime Numbers.
Ho anche notato che il jazz ed il funk, elementi distintivi della tua musica, nelle nuove tracce sono stati filtrati attraverso un suono più spigoloso di inspirazione techno.
Lo definirei piuttosto ridotto all’osso e ruvido, mi piace pensare che il soul sia ancora presente ma nel tipo di approccio, nella forma e nelle vibrazioni che ho creato con la mia strumentazione. Labels come Dance Mania, Peacefrog e Perscription ed il sound di Detroit fanno parte del mio DNA ma non posso mai liberarmi della componente soul. Approccio la musica con l’idea che sia ballabile in un club o che possa essere ascoltata a casa o in auto.
Parlando di nuovo di “In The Red”, come è stato lavorare con Amp Fiddler e Dam Funk?
Sono due leggende ed è stato più che un onore lavorare con loro. Si frequentano gli stessi circoli, faccio musica che viene dall’anima e fortemente influenzata da Detroit e dalla California così è stata una questione di tempo che ci si incontrasse. Sono contento che sia successo.
Hai appena suonato al famoso club Il Muretto. È la prima volta che ti sei esibito lì?
Si è la prima volta, ho sentito molto storie riguardanti questo posto per cui ero abbastanza eccitato di poter vedere finalmente di cosa si tratta. Ho alcuni amici italiani, incontrati duranti questi anni di visite ed esibizioni nel vostro meraviglioso paese e mi hanno tutti raccontato che quello è il posto dove sono cresciuti ed hanno la ballato la musica che anche io suono adesso. L’Italia è e sarà sempre il mio paese preferito nel quale suonare, oltre che per la gente e la musica per l’insieme delle vibrazioni.
Trovi che ci siano caratteristiche che contraddistinguono il pubblico italiano se paragonato, per esempio, con quello britannico?
Gli italiani ballano dal primo disco all’ultimo. Questo è il motivo per cui amo suonare per il pubblico italiano. Sanno apprezzare davvero la musica e sono subito pronti per seguirti nel tuo viaggio musicale. In Inghilterra è più una questione di hype o peggio.
Restando in tema di Italia. Ci sono produttori e dj italiani che appezzi?
Ce ne sono tantissimi: Enrico Crivellaro, Rame, Massimo Di Lena, Tale Of Us, l’intera Dan City Crew e potrei andare ancora avanti. Sai che gli italiani costituiscono la maggior parte delle promo emails che ricevo? Non riesco nemmeno a contarle.
Ci puoi raccontare qualcosa riguardo alla tua etichetta Prime Numbers?
La label è partita originariamente come piattaforma per le mie uscite come Trus’me ma appena cominciato un gran mucchio di musica di qualità è cominciata ad arrivarmi, ed il resto è storia come si usa dire. L’etichetta è sempre stata composta dalle persone che incontro e con le quali ho coltivato delle relazioni, sia che si tratti un remix o di una produzione originale. Non ho mai pubblicato nulla che mi sia stata spedita esternamente con l’eccezione di Massimo Di Lena, un italiano, che ironia. Così, per tutti quelli che stanno cercando di mandare promos alla label, mi dispiace ma davvero la Prime Numbers é un affare di famiglia.
Come è stata questa prima parte del 2013 dal punto di vista delle releases?
Devo dire che quest’anno è stato uno dei migliori. Scegliere un favorito sarebbe difficile perche ci sono state alcune cose forti. Dai remix e gli originals di Truss & Adesse ad il successo del mio pezzo “Somebody” e dell’intero LP “Treat Me Right”. Cosa bolle in pentola per te fino alla fine dell’anno?
Ho un nuovo EP con Skudge Presents, Love Fever Records con una collaborazione con Baby Ford e vari remixes, insomma un sacco di cose. Anche un nuovo LP è già in cantiere, insomma mi dò da fare.

Just a few hours before his first dj set at the Muretto club in Jesolo, David James Wolstencroft aka Trus’me found a bit of spare time for Soundwall’s questions and talk about his discography, his relationship with italy and his label Prime Numbers. Join us in this brief chat.
Your recent album “Treat Me Right” is a sort of U-turn in style when compared to your previous ones, especially to the second “In The Red”. I got the impression you aimed primarily to the dancefloors with the new tracks.
Musically my mindset has always been across the board, so House and Techno feels the same to me both as a producer or a dj. I chose to come out with the ideas I had in my head at the time, which back then was mainly soul, jazz and disco based. Later with “In The Red” I was looking to push myself as a producer, working with live musicians and more song based production. Once you have been through this process you learn many skills that I then used to surround myself with machines. “Treat Me Right” you could say is a by-product, of most shows that were played during peak time to the masses. With this LP I wanted to make tracks I could play and incorporate in my set but that also sat musically well at home at with my label ‘Prime Numbers’.
I also noticed that the jazz and funk, distinctive elements of your music, in the new tracks have been filtered through a more techno informed, edgy sound.
Stripped back and raw, I like to think the soul is still there but in the form of the approach and vibe I create with my gear. Dance Mania, Peacefrog and Perscription and the sound of Detroit is in my DNA but I can never lose the soul mindset. I approach the music with the idea that it can be both danced to in a club and while sat just at home or even part of your driving playlist.
Talking about “In The Red” again. How did you get the chance to collaborate with Amp Fiddler and Dam Funk and how was making music with them?
Yes these guys are all legends so it was more than an honour to work with all of them. Similar circles when we met at shows, and with my soul music vibe that had a heavy influence of Detroit and Cali, it was only a matter time before we all ran into each other. I’m glad we all did.
You just played a gig at the famous Il Muretto club. Is it the first time you djed in here?
Yes this is the first time, I’ve heard many stories of this place so I was a little excited to see what it’s all about. I have quite a few Italian friends over the years of visiting and playing in your wonderful country, and they all tell me this is where they grew up and danced to the music I play now. Italy is and always will be one of my favorite places to play for more than just the people and the music but the whole vibe.
Did you find any peculiarities in the italian public compared to, for example, the british one?
There is a whole crew: Enrico Crivellaro, Rame, Massimo Di Lena, Tale Of Us boys, the whole Dan City Crew, I mean seriously I could keep going. You know italians have to be the biggest influx of promo emails to my inbox. I can’t even keep count.
Talking about Italy again. Are there any italian djs/producers that you appreciate?

Can you tell us something about your label Prime Numbers? How did it get started, the roster and the current/forthcoming releases?

How was the 2013 so far for you, releases-wise? Which are the artists/tracks that excited you the most?
This year has been one of our best I have to say. To pick one favourite track would be too hard as there has been some crackers from the remix package to the originals from Truss, Adesse, my solo release ‘Somebody’ and my LP ‘Treat Me Right’. We have a whole heap of new remixes coming from Skudge, Truncate, Marcelus, Matthew Dear & Axel Boman this year so keep tuned on www.pnrecords.com.
What’s in the pipeline for you till the end of the year?
I have a new solo EP with Skudge Presents, Love Fever records with a collaboration with Baby Ford and various remixes, there is a whole lot coming soon actually. And new LP already in the pipeline, its busy!
