[tab title=”Italiano”]Recentemente ho avuto il piacere di assistere ad une dalle tappe della tournée europea di Tom Trago, organizzata in contemporanea all’uscita del suo nuovo album, “The Light Fantastic“. Il party è stato organizzato al Fuse di Brussel, noto tempio della techno belga e recentemente nominato, per la terza volta, miglior Club del Belgio. Ad aprire le danze, prima di Mr. Trago ci ha pensato Cleveland, giovane talento italo-lussemburghese. E alle 3 in punto Tom Trago ha iniziato il suo show. Un mix di tracce tratte dal nuovo album, sapientemente, accompagnate dai grandi classici del maestro. Suonate dal vivo dal un orchestra di drum machine e sintetizzatori e accompagnato da uno spettacolo di visual studiato nei minimi dettagli. Tra i pezzi storici inclusi nel live, “Use me Again” ma anche “What You Do”, featuring con un suo altrettanto talentuoso compatriota, Tyree Cooper. Alla fine dello show sono riuscito a sgattaiolare dietro le quinte e fare qualche domanda a Tom, che con molta simpatia ha accettato di rispondermi.
Perché nonostante tu abbia la tua propria label, hai deciso di pubblicare questo tuo nuovo album su Rush Hour?
Lavoro con Rush Hour da tanti anni oramai, ed é sempre stato un onore per me poter produrre i miei dischi sulla loro casa discografica. Hanno molto potere nel mondo dei vinili e una buona distrubuzione. Questo è uno dei motivi principali. Ho sempre lavorato con loro e non vedo perché dovrei cambiare. La mia label “Voyage Direct” è destinata fondamentalmente ai miei amici e ai produttori che mi girano attorno. Ma sto comunque pensando che in futuro usciranno anche delle mie produzioni.
Per registrare questo album hai affittato una casa in campagna e ti sei ritirato li per un mese, per quale motivo hai preferito questa location al tuo studio di Amsterdam?
Avevo bisogno di passare un po’ di tempo lontano dal mio studio, spesso una città diventa difficile da vivere. Succedono tantissime cose, tanti amici, tante feste, tante serate, troppe distrazioni! E questa casa nel bosco è un posto tranquillo dove puoi veramente concentrarti su quello che stai facendo. Se stai registrando un album credo sia essenziale fare mente locale, restare focalizzato; sapere su quale progetto stai lavorando e perché.
Pensi che questa scelta abbia potuto influenzare l’umore o il genere del tuo album?
Probabilmente si, ma non cosi tanto. Molta gente mi ha chiesto perché non sono tornato con un album ambient, qualcosa di tranquillo, rilassato. Ma avevo già in mente che tipo di LP volevo fare; sono andato in quella casa nella foresta con l’idea di produrre un album da discoteca e cosi é stato. Probabilmente questa location ha influenzato la mia musica, ma non l’ha “rallentata” per così dire.
Hai portato con te tutto il tuo studio o hai voluto lasciare a casa un po’ di materiale di proposito?
Sì, mi sono portato quasi tutto lo studio. Ho lasciato a casa una parte dei miei moduli e effetti perché volevo registrare le varie tracce abbastanze grezze, per poterle poi mixare nel mio studio con tutto il materiale necessario. Mi sono portato il mio MPC 2000, è il mio bambino. La maggior parte delle mie produzione sono fatte lì sopra. Oltre all’ MPC mi sono portato qualche drum machine e qualche sintetizzatore. Le basi per scrivere canzoni diciamo, prima crei gli accordi e la bassline, e poi vai in studio e inizia la parte piu noiosa: arrangiare e mixare il progetto. Questo mese é stato come stare in paradiso; ti svegli e ti metti a comporre fino a quando non ti addormenti. Voglio dire, tutto questo non é possibile ad Amsterdam. Ci sono troppe cose che succedono nella mia vita.
C’è un messaggio particolare che hai voluto trasmettere con questo tuo nuovo album?
Smoke Weed! Everyday.
Tra l’altro, ho letto che hai iniziato facendo il dj nei Coffee Shop di Amsterdam!
Sì, ho iniziato a suonare in un Coffee Shop, lo conosci il “Rokerij”? É stata la mia prima “serata”, oltre ad altri posti, oramai chiusi da anni. Vorrà forse dire che sto diventando vecchio!
Vuoi aggiungere qualcosa su questo nuovo album?
Compratelo! “The Light Fantastic” che cosa posso aggiungere, ascoltatelo, amatelo! Penso sia l’unica cosa che posso dire. Ah, ecco posso ringraziare tutte le persone che hanno partecipato alla creazione di questo album, tutti i miei amici. Sono molto felice di poter fare musica, con i miei amici in un posto del genere. Mi considero molto fortunato![/tab]
[tab title=”English”]Why did you decide to release this album on Rush Hours rather than on your own label?
I’ve been working with Rush Hour for a long time now, and it’s been always an honour to release my records there. They have big power in the world of vinyl and a good distribution. So that was one of the reasons. Also I’ve always been working with them and there was no reasons not to work with them. My label Voyage Direct is more focussed I guess on my friends around me. And the producers around me, and later on I will release some more tracks of myself on the Label.
I read that to record this album you rented a house in the country side for a month. Why did you choose to go there instead of your Amsterdam Studio?
I needed some little time away from my studio, sometimes the city gets a little bit rough on you. Lot of stuff appening lots of friends, parties, lots of going out lots of distractions. And this house in the forest is just in a quiet place where you can focus on stuff. If you do an album I think it’s important to have a little focus. Know on witch project you are working and why you are working on it.
And do you think that it affected the album mood in any way?
Probably it did, but not that much. Everybody asked me why didn’t you come back with an ambient album, a more peacefull, relaxed album. But I had already determined what kind of album I wanted to make, so I went into the forest house with the idea of making a club album and that didn’t change over the month, month and a half I’ve been there. Also it affected the music, but it didnt slow it down, let’s say it like that.
Did you bring any special gear; your whole studio with you?
Yeah, I brought my whole studio almost with me, I left some of the effect modules at home because I wanted to do some sort of flat recordings and than i mixed them back in my studio with my whole equipment. I brought like my MPC, MPC 2000, That’s my little baby I make most of my stuff on there and I brought some drum machines some synths, just the basics to write songs and than later on you produce them, first write the chords and the bass and than later on you go to the studio and than the “shit” work comes, arranging and stuff. This month and a half was like heaven, if you wake up and you can make music all day and just fall asleep. I mean its not possible in Amsterdam, so much other stuff also going on in my life.
Is there any particuar message, you wanted to spread with your new album?
Smoke weed. Every day!
Oh yeah i actually read that you were djing in coffee shop when you started!
Yeah i started in coffee shops, you know “Rockerij”? It was my first dj gig, next to some other place witch also closed down! It means i’m getting old i guess.
Do you want to add anything about this new album?
Buy it! “The Light Fantastic” what can i say? What can i add? Well listen to it and love it! That’s all i can say i guess, I already did the music! Yeah i can thank all the people that worked with me on the album, all my friends. I’m really thankfull of being able to do albums with my friends in a house like that. I feel blessed![/tab]
