Nelle mie interviste cerco sempre di enfatizzare il fatto che ciò che un artista propone e come pone se stesso in quello che fa’ siano le direttrici fondamentali per capirlo. La musica essendo una forma d’arte priva di schemi si adatta perfettamente a questo, tracciando sempre un quadro preciso anche delle più piccole sfumature dell’autore da cui proviene. Questo vale anche per Mathias Kaden, artista che fa della musica uno strumento per esprimere se stesso senza soffermarsi sui rigidi formalismi di generi, mode e via dicendo.
Ciao Mathias benvenuto su Soundwall, come prima cosa vorrei chiederti cos’è per te la musica.
La musica è la mia libertà. Mi circonda in ogni giorno della mia vita. Mi è necessaria per sopravvivere!
Ami la musica in senso lato, senza restrizioni di genere o simili. Cosa cerchi nella musica che ascolti?
Ogni giorno devo sentire molta musica e a volte è difficile rimanerne coinvolto. Mi piace la musica profonda, che ha una storia che sta dietro ogni canzone…in ogni caso deve farmi sentire qualcosa.
Sappiamo che ascolti molta musica nella tua vita, dall’elettronica alla musica anni ’70, ’80. Cosa in particolare?
Preferisco i suoni analogici, specialmente quelli degli anni 70/80′, mi piace molto anche l’ambient.
Ami definire il tuo stile come “Minimal Samba”, sembra proprio il nome giusto per la tua musica. Suoni delicati e precisi, uniti a percussioni e situazioni più oscure. Come è nato questo stile? Puoi parlarcene un pò?
Chiamai il mio stile “Minimal-Samba”, si. All’inizio fu più per scherzo, ma alla fine era vero perchè mischiavo sottili groove africaneggianti con micro elementi tech-house. Amo i ritmi africani e latini. Oggigiorno però non uso più così tanto la “Minimal-Samba”.
Nella tua carriera hai prodotto un solo Lp, “Studio 10”. Un grande successo che hai prodotto grazie anche all’aiuto di vari artisti. Ci puoi parlare di questo album?
Questo album è stato inteso per essere senza tempo e onestamente per me la cosa più importante è stato dare ad ogni traccia l’identità di una canzone vera. Ogni stile che utilizzo, african, latino o tedesco…dovrebbe essere senza tempo. Oggigiorno dove tutti campionano e mettono loop di parti di tracce volevo creare qualcosa di completamente diverso, ed ecco perchè ho invitato altri musicisti e cantanti per il mio album!
Nella tua musica si notano elementi che non fanno parte della musica elettronica. Gli strumenti musicali tradizionali trovano il loro spazio nelle tue produzioni. Puoi parlarci del tuo rapporto con questo mondo?
Da quando ho cominciato a viaggiare per il mondo ho ascoltato molta musica tradizionale e mi piace prenderne un po’ per la mia musica. Sono molto aperto ai vari tipi di musica.
Il tuo rapporto con la musica classica è talmente forte che hai voluto fare qualcosa di particolare unendoti ad un’orchestra. Puoi parlarci di questa esperienza?
Ad inizio 2009 ho suonato per tre giorni con l’orchestra filarmonica di Gera, la mia città natale…suonammo nel nostro vecchio teatro. Eravamo circa cento persone sul palco e per ogni giorno circa ottocento persone son venute ad assistere alla nostra performance. E’ stato uno dei migliori momenti della mia vita, musicalmente parlando. Suonavo la mia elettronica e l’orchestra mi accompagnava nelle parti principali.
Questo tuo tentativo di unire presente e passato fa pensare che per te la musica sia un qualcosa “senzatempo”. È così?
E’ vero, la musica per me deve essere senza tempo, è molto importante! Non voglio che la gente si stanchi di una delle mie canzoni! A volte però le mie canzoni sono troppo senza tempo, non hanno una melodia che ti ricordi facilmente e questo non è molto positivo 😉
La musica è senza tempo, ma il progresso e la tecnologia sono un aspetto importante per il mondo dei dj. Com’è il tuo rapporto con la tecnologia in campo musicale?
Penso di aver un buon rapporto con il progresso tecnologico, scelgo solo di non usarlo nella sua interezza. A volte sono un po’ lento con Internet, Skype e tutte queste cose un po’ Social…a volte impiego molto tempo a rispondere a mail o interivste…scusatemi!!!
Dopo questo parlare di musica mi è venuta voglia di sbirciare dentro la tua borsa dei dischi. C’è qualche disco che ha segnato la tua carriera oppure che porterai sempre con te?
Si, ce ne sono alcuni di sicuro, come “Higher State Of Consciousness” di Josh Wink o “Spritzcussion” di Ricardo e anche i Daft Punk 😉

In my interview i always enphatize that what is proposed by an artist and how he puts himself in what he does are the basic guidelines to understand it. Music is a kind of art with no patterns and it has the ability to trace a perfect picture of the author, even the smallest nuances. This can be say also for Mathias Kaden, an artist that makes the music a tool to express himself without beeing prapped in genres, fashons and so on.
Hi Mathias, welcome on Soundwall, first of all i want to ask you what is the music in your opinion?
Music is my personal freedom! Music is everyday around me in my life. Music is nessesary for me to survive!
You love the music without restrction of genres and stuff like this. What are you looking for in the music that you listen to?
Everyday I have to listen to a lot of music and sometimes its hard for me to get into it. I like music with a deeper sense and story behind the song – however it is, I have to feel it.
We know that you listen a lot of music in your life, from electronic to ’80’s and ’70’s music.
What in particular?
I prefer analogue sounds 😉 especially the 70/80’s synthy sound but I also enjoy a lot of ambient music.
You like to define your style “Minimal Samba” and that look clearly the perfect name for your music. Very accurate sounds, percussions and dark situations. How is your style borned? Can you talk about that a little bit?
I called my style minimal samba. At the beginning it was more as a joke, but in the end it was true because I used a lot of subtile african´s grooves together with micro tech-house elements.I really love the African culture and a lot of the latin rhythms. But nowadays I don´t use the minimal samba sound so much anymore.
In your career you produced only one LP, Studio 10. A great success that youmade with the help of other artist. Can you talk about this album?
This album is intended to be timeless and honest and most important for me was to give each track a real song-characteristic. Any style I went to, African, south American, German … it just should sound timeless. In these days where everybody seems only to sample and loop parts of other tracks, I wanted to create something completely different and this is why I invited a few other musicans and singers for my album!
In your music we can find elements that don’t belong to electronic music. The traditional instruments find ther place in your production. Can you talk us about your relationship with the world of traditional instruments and music?
Since I started to travel around the world I have listened to a lot of traditional music and I like to take a little bit out for my own music! My brain is very open to different kinds of music.
Your relationship with the classical music is so strong that you wanted to join in an orchestra . Can you talk about this exprerience?
In early 2009 I played a big concert for 3 days with the Jena Gera Philharmonic Orchestra from my hometown in our old theater. We were approximately 100 people on the stage and every day 800 people came to listen to our performance. It was one of the best musical moments in my life!! I played my own electronic music and the orchestra accompanied me on the main parts 😉
This attempt to link present and past make me think that you look at the music like a “timeless thing”. Is it true?
Yes this is true, music has to be timeless for me, this is very important. I really don´t want people to get tired of a song of mine! But sometimes my song´s are too timeless and have no melody to remember – this is not great either 😉
The music is a timless thing but the technological progress is an important thing for the dj’s world. How is your relationship with this world?
I think I have a good relationship with technical progress I just choose not to use it all. I am sometimes quite slow with internet, skype and all these social things. Often I need a long time to answer mails or interviews…sorry!!!
After this talking i would like to look into your records bag. Are there some records that are so important for your career or that you always bring it to you?
Yes, there are a few for sure like Josh Wink- Higher State of Consciousness or Ricardo´s Spritzcussion and also Daft Punk 😉
