Il trio funky elettronico fiorentino e il produttore più apprezzato dell’anno in corso, fondono i due progetti per un live show di forte impatto visivo e ritmico. Dopo aver suonato insieme all’Elita Festival a Milano e al Bosconi Festival in collaborazione con Fiesta Privada a Roma, sono talmente affiatati da voler continuare il progetto e da esser pronti a rinchiudersi in studio per preparare un disco insieme. E c’è da pensare che potrebbe essere pronto a breve, data la velocità con cui hanno preparato questi due live.
Da dove parte questa collaborazione, come siete entrati in contatto?
San Proper: Sono entrato in contatto con questi splendidi hippie dei Clover per un remix su Bosconi Records. Un paio di mesi dopo mi trovavo a Firenze per un djset al Tabasco, e decisi di riservarmi un paio di giorni per incontrare gente, visitare la città ed assaporare l’atmosfera.
The Clover: Lo invitammo al nostro studio e lì trovammo subito un feeling speciale che ha portato 4 tracce in una sola jam session. Quando ci hanno chiamati per l’Elita Festival a Milano con live show separati, abbiamo deciso di provare a fondere i due show e farne uno insieme. È stato talmente divertente esibirsi insieme che abbiamo bissato per Fiesta Privada a Roma (il 30 aprile passato), e lì abbiamo compreso davvero la potenzialità di questo progetto live. È davvero splendido aver creato questa collaborazione semplicemente dal feeling musicale, e per lo più in tre giorni. Non capita spesso di trovare un musicista con cui si crea affiatamento sin dal primo momento.
San Proper: Io continuerò naturalmente ad esibirmi anche da solista, ma di tanto in tanto cercheremo di fare questa collaborazione speciale. I The Clover sono spettacolari, dei produttori veramente originali con un gusto squisito, e la combinazione di noi quattro è perfetta per gli show live, perché tutti abbiamo una grande passione per la musica e ci divertiamo tanto a suonare.
Come è strutturato il vostro live insieme?
San Proper: Nel live con i Clover, io mi occupo delle chitarre, della voce, delle percussioni dal vivo e delle percussioni elettroniche. Poi i Clover, con il loro sound e il loro spettacolo, fanno il resto…
Quando faccio i miei live personali cerco di essere multi-strumentista, suonando il basso di tanto in tanto, qualche chitarra, un synth, un po’ di programmazione e vari strumenti elettronici e giocattoli, utilizzando molti vocal.
The Clover: Il live con San ci ha messi di fronte a nuove dinamiche, per cui abbiamo investito tantissimo nell’incremento dell’analogico. Ci siamo un po’ scambiati i ruoli tra noi, e dobbiamo dire che l’effetto che si crea è totalmente differente, molto più un concerto che un live-set, con pause tra una traccia e un’altra, molto più spazio all’improvvisazione, molta più spontaneità. Stavamo da tempo sperimentando nuovi synth, tastiere e drum, e l’incontro con San Proper ci ha dato la possibilità di utilizzarli tutti. Il nostro live sta diventando più selvaggio, meno freddo e statico. Lui ha una presenza scenica impressionante sul palco, oltre ad essere dotato di un orecchio super sensibile.
Prossimi concerti e progetti futuri?
San Proper: A parte questo nuovo progetto con i Clover, per il quale ho già preparato un logo, un video promozionale e qualche nuova idea in studio, ho un sacco di date eccellenti già fissate, Philadelphia, New York, Ibiza, ma ad essere onesti sono abbastanza smemorato e mi piace vivere il momento. Carpe diem, e cerco di concentrarmi sul prossimo weekend e sulla settimana dopo, quindi lascio tutto in mano a Derek. E’ il mio booker, ma anche uno straordinario batterista jazz-fusion che suona in diversi brani del mio nuovo album.
The Clover: Stiamo già preparando una serie di tracce per un album nostro, oltre a quelle insieme a San, con il quale siamo onorati di lavorare e suonare. Abbiamo da poco pubblicato un nuovo ep “Four Rooms” su Bosconi Records, nel quale è contenuto anche il remix di San Proper alla nostra track “Goodies”. Inoltre continueremo a portare in giro il nostro live-set; abbiamo già delle date a Berlino, una in Svizzera, poi a Barcellona e, insieme a San, una ad Amsterdam a Luglio.
San ci parli un po’ del tuo album in uscita su Rush Hour?
San Proper: Il mio album “Animal” uscirà il 28 maggio 2012. I manager di Rush Hour mi chiesero lo scorso anno di fare un album che mostrasse tutto il mio lato selvaggio, con molti vocal, con il sound particolare della mia chitarra e degli altri strumenti. Ero contentissimo, perché avevo già in mente di fare un album, e questo prodotto avrebbe mantenuto il mio sound più vicino possibile a quello originale. Ho fatto un album praticamente on the road: ho scritto, registrato e prodotto tutti i brani in camera d’albergo o in altri luoghi in cui mi sono ritrovato per il tour e per i miei live. Ho registrato alcune parti vocali presso lo studio di Metaboman a Jena e lo studio di Kalabrese a Zurigo, ma anche in un albergo a Livorno, quando suonavo per il King Club. Alla fine ho remixato l’album con Ricardo Villalobos a Berlino dopo aver finito le produzioni nel mio studio ad Amsterdam. “Animal” rappresenta davvero la mia vita negli ultimi 9 mesi, tutte le lotte, le avventure, le emozioni e gli amori che ho incontrato per strada.
Qual è il vostro negozio di dischi preferito nel mondo?
San Proper: Rush Hour è il mio preferito, ma mi sento di dover esprimere la mia stima anche per Serendipity a Milano, Dr. Vinyl a Bruxelles, Hard Wax a Berlino. Ho anche conosciuto alcuni rivenditori privati a Parigi e in Brasile che mi aiutano costantemente con la mia caccia al tesoro. La maggior parte dei miei dischi gioiello, li ho acquistati da Mr. Peabody a Chicago e a Peoples, Detroit.
The Clover: Anche per noi Rush Hour è il migliore in assoluto. Validissimo anche Hard Wax a Berlino. Ma ci piace anche curiosare un po’ da Marquee Moon a Firenze, il negozio di dischi più originale della città, rilevato da una vecchia bottega di ottica.

The funky electronic Florentine trio and the most popular producer of this year, merged the two projects for a live show with a strong visual impact and rhythmic. After having played together in two Festival in Milan and Rome, they so well together to want to continue the project and get ready to retreat into the studio to make an album together. And it could be out in a while, with all this feeling between them.
Where does this collaboration start? How did you get in touch with them?
San Proper: I got in touch with these lovely hippies of The Clover for a remix on Bosconi. When I had a gig in Florence a couple of months later I had some extra days, like I normally do, I used that time to meet people, explore the city and feel the vibe of it.
The Clover: We invited him to our studio and we kinda hit it off immediately which resulted in 4 tracks in a jam session. When we got booked at a Bosconi party in Milano with separate live-shows we decided to try and fuse the two shows and do one together. This turned out really good an dgave us the idea to do it more often, like, for instance, at the Bosconi festival at Fiesta Privada in Rome last monday, the 30th of April. It’s really wonderful because we have created this partnership just from musical feeling, and in three days only. You do not often manage with a musician whom you feel so good from the beginning.
San Proper: I’ll keep on doing live shows solo, but occasionally we’ll do this special collaboration more often. They’re good, original producers with an exquisite taste and combination of us four is ultimate for shows, because we all have a great passion for music and lot’s of fun making it.
How do you structure your live sets?
San Proper: When I perform with the Clover, I’ll do vocals, guitars, live percussion as well as electronic percussion. The Clover does the rest. When I do my solo live shows I’ll try to be a multi-instrumentalist playing bass occasionally, some guitar, some synth, some programming and jamming with various electronic tools and toys, lots of vocals too though that depends on the time of the night when I’m performing and the tracks I select for the show.
The Clover: The liveshow with San are faced with new dynamics, we have invested a lot in increasing analog. Our role as a band is a little bit changed, and we must say that the effect we created together is totally different, a concert more than a live-set, with pauses between a track and the next one, more time to improvisation, a some spontaneity. Last year, we were experimenting with new synths, keyboards and drum, and the project with San Proper has given us the opportunity to play them all live. Our live-set is becoming more savage, no more space for that cold and static sound coming from digital tools. He has an incredible energy on stage, and a super-sensitive ear for music.
Upcoming concerts and projects?
San Proper: For this new project with Clover, I’ve already designed a logo. We are going to launch a promotional video and some new ideas in studio. I’ve got a lot of excellent gigs lined-up, Philadelphia, New York and at Zoo Project in Ibiza on summer. But to be honest, I’m quite forgetful and I like to live for the moment; carpe diem, so I try to focus on this coming weekend and the gigs happening the week after.
The Clover: We’re already working on several tracks for a new album, and a couple of new tunes with San, and we liked very much to work and play with him. We just released a new EP “Four Rooms” on Bosconi Records, which contains also our track “Goodies” remixed by San Proper. We’ll also keep on play our live-sets around, between Berlin, Barcellona and, with San, in Amsterdam on summer.
San let’s speak about your album on Rush Hour?
San Proper: My album “Animal” will be out on the 28th of May 2012 on Rush Hour. They approached me last year in August to do an album with my organic side, lots of vocals, my style of playing guitar and other instruments. I was up for that because it keeps the product close to the person like this and I wanted to release an album in the spring of 2012. I did a solo album that I’ve written, recorded and produced all tracks mostly on the road, in hotel rooms and other spots where I hung out between touring, performing and playing my gigs. For instance, I recorded some of the vocals at Metaboman’s studio in Jena and Kalabrese’s studio in Zurich, but also in a hotel in Livorno when I was playing for the King’s club. Eventually I’ve mixed the album with Ricardo Villalobos in Berlin after I finished the productions in my laboratory in Amsterdam. “Animal” really represents my life in the last 9 months; all adventures, struggles, emotions and love I had to deal with.
What is your favorite record store in the world?
San Proper: Rush Hour’s my favourite but I also feel love for Serendipity in Milan, Dr. Vinyl in Bruxelles, Hardwax in Berlin, because of their mentality and the records I’ve picked up there. I also got to know some personal dealer’s in Paris and Brazil who help me with my treasure hunt. I pick up most of my disco jams from Mr. Peabody’s records store in Chicago and I’ve also been digging from People’s records store in Detroit a couple of times. Most of my records jewel, I bought them from Mr. Peabody and Peoples in Chicago, Detroit.
The Clover: Rush Hour is the best ever in ours opinion too. Hard Wax, in Berlin is fantastic. But we also use to like Marquee Moon in Florence, the most original record shop in town, found an old optical shop.
