Il rosso probabilmente non è il colore che assoceremmo più facilmente al mondo della techno, un mondo cupo, oscuro, ma sicuramente d’impatto. Uno shock, come vedere una figura rossa ondeggiare tra l’oscurità di di un palco avvolto da sonorità profonde con chiare origini detroitiane. Questo è il caso di Redshape, artista dall’identità nascosta da una maschera, un simbolo volto a scollegare totalmente la sua persona dalla sua musica, unico strumento che utilizza per conoscere se stesso. Non si sa molto di lui e per questo abbiamo voluto scambiarci due chiacchiere curiosi di sapere chi e cosa si cela dietro quella maschera.
Ciao Redshape, benvenuto su Soundwall.
Nel mondo della techno sei conosciuto per i tuoi live set brillanti e naturalmente per la tua maschera. A parte tutto questo non sappiamo molto di te. Come è iniziata?
Mi innamorai della musica elettronica ad inizio anni ’90, in sostanza quando capii che c’era qualcosa di più all’interno della musica, qualcosa di più che il solo riprodurla. Misi insieme dell’attrezzatura, niente di straordinario, più o meno la versione economica di quella migliore. Non avevo idea del perchè volessi far uscire una traccia entro i 18 anni, ma questo obbiettivo mi ha dato l’energia per fare quello che stavo facendo e alla fine mi ha reso soddisfatto.
Una figura rossa definisce la tua immagine, ma che tipo di connotati possiamo dare alla tua musica?
Ora il nome non rappresenta molto nessun tipo di genere o forma. E’ più uno stato mentale, un qualcosa che sta alla base, non descrivibile, che racchiude tutta l’energia e la creatività che sta alla base della mia musica.
Hai una maschera rossa che racchiuderà molti significati, ma tralasciando la maschera in se sarei curioso di sapere il perchè della scelta del colore rosso. Il rosso è un colore d’impatto, molto profondo, un colore che non assocerei alla techno. Il rosso descrive un po’ la tua musica?
Come detto, oggi la risposta è molto semplice, sono sempre stato affascinato dal contrasto tra rosso e nero, in qualsiasi forma d’arte. Anche ora nello scrivere, il colore rosso mi fa venire in mente l’arte. Attualmente non penso molto ai dettagli nella mia musica, mi piace aprir la porta e lasciare che il suono mi trasporti. I risultati cambiano come possono cambiare i giorni, non hanno molto a che fare con colori o forme particolari.
Hai un’identità segreta come molti artisti techno del passato. C’è un collegamento tra le due cose?
Non così tanto come molti credono. Il progetto Redshape mi venne in mente quando il web e tutto quel flusso di informazioni stavano prendendo piede. Tutti volevano sapere tutto e molti di loro si facevano delle opinioni sapendo poco e talvolta anche sapendo cose sbagliate. Cominciai a comprare dischi in un periodo in cui sul 12” era stampato il nome del progetto e non tanto per renderlo segreto o cose del genere, faceva figo sapere il nome di un produttore quando parlavi con gli amici, pur magari non sapendo chi fosse. Mi piaceva molto sta cosa, questa “indirect countryfree si-fi project name attitude”, che avvolgeva molto la musica del tempo.
Parlando del passato, se dicessimo che la tua musica è una “interpretazione futuristica della vecchia Detroit Techno” cosa diresti?
Da quel che vedo oggi Detroit cerca di dare un’interpretazione futuristica della musica in generale, andando contro le regole classiche nella composizione o le leggi della musica di ogni tipo. Estendendo la cosa devo ammettere che oltre alle varie Chicago e New York ci sono anche paesi come Inghilterra e Belgio che hanno una forte influenza sull’espressione musicale in questo momento. Quindi ad essere onesti è un po’ tutto questo quello che cerco di trarre e ciò con cui mi piace relazionarmi.
É questa la ragione per la quale ti esibisci sia attraverso un dj set sia attraverso un live? La prima più legata alla tradizione della techno, la seconda più proiettata verso il futuro, una direzione in cui l’artista può esprimere se stesso senza limiti o confini. Cosa ne pensi?
Suonare mi rende felice e sinceramente non vedo una grande differenza tra le due cose, probabilmente mettere dischi potrebbe portarmi più lontano del suonare live, deve essere qualcosa che ha a che fare con il fatto di usare metallo e plastica contemporaneamente, probabilmente dovrei procurarmi un controller metallico per suonare live, ahah.
Techno, un tipo di musica che forse merita di essere riscoperto. Come vedi la techno oggi? Che ruolo ricopre tra tutte le sfumature dell’elettronica?
Di fatto la techno non si è mai persa, non molto è cambiato anche riguardo tutti i sottogeneri generati dai vari nomi che gli dà la gente. Quella techno che c’è stata dopo il 2004 (o giù di lì) mi rese un po’ triste al tempo, finchè realizzai che era una sottoidea generata da qualcun’altro, il quale l’aveva generata partendo da un altro ancora e così via. Non un qualcosa di preoccupante alla fine. Finchè alla gente piacerà quello che sta facendo per il mondo dei dancefloor andrà tutto bene.
Parlando più in generale, cosa ne pensi della scena elettronica? E ancora più in generale cosa ne pensi della scena musicale? Sei giovane ma sicuramente hai una tua opinione, pensando anche alle tue aspettative.
E’ molto creativa, sono molto felice di tutte le recenti direzioni che ha preso la cassa. Il web sta lentamente mostrando la forza che lega persone e musica in un modo diverso rispetto a quello che brutta gente usava fino a 5 anni fa. Quindi credo che la scena musicale sia in buona forma e spero che non ci vogliano altri 5 anni per far si che le ultime major label si uniscano al movimento. Possono esserci giorni in cui provo cattive sensazioni per quanto riguarda la visione artistica della cosa, ma alla fine questi giorni vengono bilanciati da altri in cui guardando al tutto mi vien da dire: oggi è forse il miglior momento di sempre per la musica e per me è molto bello esserne parte senza preoccuparmi troppo di quello che accadrà.
Non sapevamo molto di te, abbiamo provato a parlare del tuo passato, del tuo presente e ora vorremmo sapere qualcosa riguardo al tuo futuro. Progetti? Nuove idee? Daresti una forma al tuo futuro per noi?
Riascolterò molta musica che mi è scivolata via in questi anni, guardando a dettagli che sicuramente ho perso. Aggiornerò il mio modo di esprimermi, del tipo avrò a che fare con i miei nuovi (vecchi) “amici album” per un po’ di tempo, cercando lentamente di sentirmi a mio agio con lui/lei. Questa sarà più o meno la fine di una linea temporale nella quale darò spazio sicuramente a nuove cose di cui però non ho ancora idea.

Red is not the first color that comes to mind thinking about techno. Techno is for sure a gloomy and dark world, but also an impact world. A kind of shock, like seeing a red shape sway surrounded by the darkness of a stage, wrapped into deep sounds that have clear Detroit roots. This is the case of Redshape, an artist with an hidden identity by a mask, a symbol with the aim to separate the person himself to his music, that is the only way to understand himself. We don’t know much about him and for this reason we wanted to have a chat with him, tryng to understand who and what is there behind the mask.

In the world of techno you are a well known artist thanks to your brilliant live set and obviously for the mask. Despite this we don’t really know much about you. How you started?
I fall in love with electronic music in the early 90s, basically as soon as i was old enough to understand that there is something behind music rather than just playing it back. I got some basic equipment together, nothing fancy, more or less the cheap versions of the major tools. No idea why i wanted to have a record out by the age of 18 but this goal gave me power in what i’ve been doing and finally fullfilled it. Diving through many subs of the big thing i found myself getting more and more into performing and producing electronic music, which somehow after many stuff before found its peak in starting the project called “redshape”.
A red shape define your figure, but what type of shape can describe your music?
Actually the name doesnt really represent any sort of form or type, it’s more a state of mind thing, a non describable base which holds all the diffuse energy and creativity i see as the source of (my) music.
You have a red mask that for sure has a lots of meanings but aside from the mask itself, I’m curious to understand why the choice of red. Red is an impact color, very deep, a color that I’m not sure to link to techno. Is red a color that can describe your music?
As explained above. the actual answer is pretty simple, i always had a big favour for the contrast of black and red – used in all kinds of art. Even now writing, the colour red pops up in my mind saying “art”. I actually dont try to think too much about details in my music, i love to open a door and let the sound take me on a ride – outcome changes as much as days can be diffrent and dont has much to do with the colour red or any shape.
A secret identity like many techno artist from the past. Is there a link between the two things?
Not that much as most see it or believe. the project redshape came to my mind in a time where the web and all the information overflow started to kick off. Everybody wanted to know everything and many formed their opinions by only a small and/or even wrong amount of hints or informations. I started buying records in a time where there where project names on 12″s not trying to be “secret” or anything, that time it actually felt “cool” to get to know the name of a producer u can show off when talking to friends but you where never actuall looking for it. i really liked that, this “indirect countryfree si-fi project name attitude” which surrounded so much music from that time.
Talking about the past, if we say that your music is a “futuristic interpretation of the old Detroit techno”, what do you think about?
Actually detroit, as i see it, tryd to be that futuristic interpretation of music in general, fighting against classic rules in composition or musical laws of any kind. To be a bit more wide i must admit that beside the obvius Chicago / New York thing also england and belgium had a big influence on this way of expressing music that time. So to be fair its something all these parts gave me and which i love to connect with ever since.
Is that the reason why you perform both dj set and live? The first mode is more linked to tradition of techno, and the second one is projected to the future, a direction where the artist can express himself without limits and boundaries. What do you think about?
Performing music in general makes me happy i dont see that big diffrence between the two kinds of. Probably playing records can bring me a bit further than playing live, must have something to do with the use of metall and plastic at the same time, probably i should get me a clean metall controller for playing live haha.
Techno, a kind of music that maybe deserve to be rediscovered. How do you see today techno? What kind of role has between the other shades of electronic music?
Techno actually never got lost. looking at the basic idea – not much changed, ranging from nearly all kind of subgenre the namegiving audience has to offer. that kind of techno techno “leaving” 2004 (or something) made me quite sad at that time until i realised that this also was a sub of the idea which got overflown by another, which got overflown by another and so on, nothing to worry about in the end. As long as people enjoy what they are doing on world’s dancefloors all is good.
Talking generally, what do you think about the electronic scene? And more generally what do you think about the music scene? You are young but for sure you had an opinion, also thinking about your future expectations.
It’s very creative (again) – really happy about all the recent directions the bassdrum took. the web slowly starts to show its strengh in connection music and people in a way lacking any evil people saw in it 5 years ago. So i think music scene is in good shape and it hopefully wont take another 5 years till the last major label or music right company joins this ride. There maybe days where dark feelings come up in me regarding a more artistic view on all that, but in the end, these days get balanced out by looking at the whole picture saying: now it’s probably the best time for music ever and for me its great fun to enjoy this without worrying too much of what there is to come.
We didn’t know much about you, we tried to talk about your past, your present and now we want to know something about your future. Projects? New ideas? Can you shape your future for us?
Relisten a lot of music which passed my way the last years, looking for details i surely missed the first time. updating my view so to speak. Kinda fighting with my new (old) friend “album” for quite some while now and starting to feel quite pleased with him/her slowly. This will be the end of a timeline giving free space to another new one in the circle which i have no clue about yet.
