Contemporaneamente, due ragazzi di Seattle, Harrison Mills e Clayton Knight, si conoscono all’Università e iniziano a produrre musica elettronica. Questa volta però non si tratta di EDM, ma di elettronica fatta di nostalgia e atmosfere sognanti. Da internet al palco, il passo è breve, in poco tempo arrivano successo e ammiratori in giro per il mondo, fino ad arrivare al 2014, anno della consacrazione definitiva. Un album, “In Return”, e un tour mondiale in compagnia di Slow Magic, Blue Hawaii, Craft Spells, Lindsay Lowend e Yung Gud. Ne abbiamo parlato con gli Odesza, in un botta e risposta veloce.
Western Washington University. Come avete iniziato?
Eravamo gli unici che producessero musica elettronica nella nostra scuola. Abbiamo trovato questo interesse in comune nella musica eclettica che ascoltavamo.
Avete iniziato ad avere ammiratori in giro per il mondo in poco tempo. Avevate mai immaginato un inizio del genere?
Non ci saremmo mai aspettati una risposta così forte e siamo veramente onorati di avere tutta questa gente che ci supporta.
Quando avete iniziato a produrre musica stava esplodendo il fenomeno dell’EDM in tutta la sua brutalità. Possiamo dire che siete una sorta di risposta, o come ha detto l’Herald Sun, rappresentate un crescente movimento anti EDM?
Non sappiamo dirti se noi siamo la risposta. Pensiamo che la scena EDM degli Stati Uniti sia abbastanza satura, quasi tutta la musica ha lo stesso suono. Pensiamo che la gente sia pronta per affrontare un nuovo corso della musica elettronica, e noi speriamo di farne parte.
Ascoltando “In Return”, capisci subito che non si tratta solo di una collezione di tracce, ma qualcosa con un’anima e un’identità. Come se fosse un viaggio in un sogno, o in qualche posto dall’atmosfera fantastica.
Abbiamo cercato di rendere “In Return” un’esperienza completa, abbiamo voluto mostrare una grande varietà di diversi stili e influenze, cercando sempre di mantenere una certa atmosfera. Abbiamo voluto che la release fosse qualcosa con cui entrare in contatto personalmente.
Siete andati in tour in giro per l’Europa. Com’è andata? E le date italiane?
In Italia è stato bellissimo. Non eravamo molto conosciuti, quindi le persone hanno avuto un mix di diverse reazioni, ma non vediamo l’ora di tornare.
Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci dal vostro Live Tour del 2015?
Abbiamo lavorato molto sul nostro live set, aggiungendo nuovi strumenti e riscrivendo i nostri pezzi più vecchi.
Chi sono gli artisti che vi ispirano?
M83, Four Tet, Daft Punk, Justice, Gorrillaz, Boards of Canada, la lista è lunga…
State lavorando a della nuova musica?
Ci siamo concentrati più sul live, ma stiamo partorendo delle nuove idee e non vediamo l’ora di tirarle fuori.[/tab]

At the same time, two guys from Seattle, Harrison Mills e Clayton Knight, met each other at the University and they started to produce electronic music. This time id not EDM, but electronic music developed through nostalgia e dreaming atmosphere. From the internet to the stage, is a short step and in a few time they have success and fan alla round the world, till the 2014, the year of their explosion . One album, “In Return”, and a world tour with Slow Magic, Blue Hawaii, Craft Spells, Lindsay Lowend e Yung Gud. We’ve talked about with Odesza, in a short interview.
Western Washington University. How did you get started?
We were the only people really making electronic music at our school and found common ground in the eclectic music we were listening to.
You began to have fans all around the world in a few time. Have you ever imagined a start like this?
We never expected such a strong response and are very humbled to have so many people support us.
When you started making music, the brutality of EDM was exploding in the US. Can we say that you are the answer, or as the Herald Sun said, you’re “a surging contra-EDM movement”?
We don’t know if we can say we are the answer. We think the U.S. EDM scene is over saturated and a lot of the music sounds much the same. We believe people are ready for a new direction of electronic music and we hope to a be part of that.
Listening to “In Return”, you can feel that is not just a collection of tracks, but something with a soul and one identity. It’s like a trip in a dream or some place with a fantastic atmosphere, this is what I feel.
We tried to make “In Return” a full experience and wanted to show a wide range of production styles and influences but still hold everything together with a certain atmosphere. We wanted the release to be something you could put on and connect with personally.
You went on tour all around Europe. How has it been? And the Italian dates?
Italy was beautiful. We weren’t really well known out there so people had some mixed reactions to our sound but are excited to come back.
What do we have to expect from your 2015 live tour?
We have done a lot of work on the live set by adding new live instrumentation and rewriting some of our older tunes.

Are you working on some new music?
We have been focusing mainly on the live set but have some beginning ideas down that we are pretty excited to see evolve.[/tab]
