Quando si è concretizzata la possibilità di scambiare due chiacchere con Matt John, sapevo che non sarebbe stata la solita intervista. Dalle risposte infatti esce il ritratto di una persona che vive in un suo micro mondo, fatto di astrattismo e pensieri subliminali. Uno che se ne frega altamente di come gira il mercato discografico, degli artisti emergenti, di autopromuoversi, di suonare davanti a migliaia di persone, di progettare il suo futuro… Chi lo comprende, lo ama a prescindere da ogni discorso e risposta no-sense…dietro a tanta follia e ingenuità, si nasconde un genio che ha trovato estimatori del calibro di Villalobos, Zip e che ha fatto innamorare migliaia di clubbers prima a Berlino e poi in tutto il mondo…lasciatevi condurre nel suo viaggio spirituale!
Usi il termine “olografico” per descrivere te e la tua musica (hai fondato infatti anche la label “Holographic Island”). Vuoi spiegarci il senso più profondo di questo termine?
La musica per me è spaziale come un ologramma. Quando produco, prendo parti diverse da tempi diversi. Le parti sono collocate ovunque nello spazio, ma alla fine si uniscono tutte in una sola traccia. Questo rappresenta in un certo senso la complessità dell’anima. L’anima infatti è composta da più parti, la paragonerei ad un uccello che vola libero e che riesce ad andare oltre lo spazio e del tempo. “Holographic Island” riflette l’idea di una piattaforma, in cui tali aspetti possono incontrarsi e divertirsi.
Non voglio porgerti le classiche domande sul tuo passato. Vorrei piuttosto analizzare il tuo “modus operandi”. Il minimalismo ti ha contraddistinto fin dai tempi della tua prima release, quale pensi sia la chiave di lettura per una musica tanto astratta?
Lasciare che accada tutto da sé, in un modo completamente naturale, senza pensare, per far volare l’anima…
Ritieni quindi che la tua musica sia riservata ad una precisa cerchia di ascoltatori che hanno un’attenzione superiore nei confronti dei dettagli?
Produco cose molto diverse. In questo modo raggiungo più ascoltatori interessati ad ogni genere. Dipende dalla traccia che produco.
Proprio in base a questo, cosa ti senti di dire a quelli che non riescono a cogliere il vero senso della tua musica?
Grazie in ogni caso per avermi ascoltato.
Ascoltando ogni tuo singolo pezzo, sembra quasi di esser avvolti in un’ipnosi musicale. Vedi in tale ipnosi un senso di purezza?
Oltre ai vari effetti, voglio insegnare ad avere una maggiore sensibilità all’orecchio, per condurre gli ascoltatori in un viaggio, un viaggio spirituale per entrare in contatto con il potere divino – anche senza droghe.
Oltre ai semplici e conosciutissimi nomi, cosa rappresentano per te in poche parole:
1) Perlon: Puro, dolce, unico, senza limiti.
2) Villalobos:Amore, musicista, aiutante, rivoluzionario, suono micro-house astratto.
3) Panorama Bar: grande esperienza ed energia per suonare, sporco.
4) Bar 25 e la sua label. Il vecchio Bar 25: un salone di reincarnazione, luogo di incontro per creativi e artisti. Afterhours senza limiti di tempo. Lì tutto era rappresentato: dal dolore al divertimento. L’etichetta: piattaforma per i nuovi arrivati.
D’altra parte viaggi in senso opposto rispetto alla corrente di tantissimi artisti odierni. Cosa pensi riguardo la musica di oggi?
Nei miei ultimi set ho suonato l’80% della mie produzioni. Ultimamente produco e suono subito le mie cose. Ad essere onesti non cerco più di tanto. Ma sono sicuro che ci sarà sempre musica fresca e innovativa, se davvero la si ricerca. Oggi poi si può acquistare molta più musica rispetto al passato. Di conseguenza si ha più possibilità di trovare qualcosa di buono.
C’è qualche artista di cui per ora abbiamo sentito parlare poco e secondo te merita maggior attenzione?
Non ho davvero idea.
In Italia si muove qualcosa verso il tuo orizzonte?
Non ho idea.
Parlando invece di locations. Quale potrebbe essere la tua ideale?
Non mi importa molto. La cosa più importante per me è il miglior sistema audio e che ogni persona sia coinvolta e si diverta. Per me è molto importante raggiungere le persone con la mia musica. Mi sono divertito allo stesso modo di fronte a 2000 o anche 5 persone. Mi piacerebbe suonare in un piccolo spazio con 8 altoparlanti per massimo 6 persone. (L’ho già fatto ed è stato davvero favoloso! Wow…)
Non pensi che attualmente la figura del dj/artista sia molto legata ad un discorso di promozione, marketing e che a volte si rischi di perdere l’attenzione verso il vero modo di produrre?
Assolutamente! Questo è uno dei motivi per cui l’universo musicale si sta evolvendo. Purtroppo però ci si concentra più sul business che nella musica. Se sei un dj di successo, la tentazione di farsi coinvolgere in cose che ti fanno deviare dalla musica è davvero grande (ma non è una novità). Per me una delle sfide più importanti è quello di domare l’ego con amore e dedizione verso la musica. Credo che un musicista appassionato e innovativo riesca sempre ad ottenere il giusto sostegno e attenzione. (Voglio aggiungere: tutta la scena che riguarda i dj otterrà sempre più attenzioni da un sacco di persone nel mondo. E’ parte dell’evoluzione dei nostri giorni. E’ molto importante accettarlo e prendersi cura dell’idea della vera musica underground per sostenere la musica e gli artisti che si amano. Non possiamo comunque cambiare questo passo evolutivo. E’ una cosa che ora riguarda tutto il mondo, non solo nella musica).
Come sei solito operare per la creazione dei tuoi suoni così unici? Vuoi svelarci in dettaglio come operi in studio?
Ecco una piccola descrizione del mio piccolo setup: PC con scheda audio Creamware dsp, Ableton Live, Cubase a volte, un vecchio mainmixer Studer radiopult, 303, Korg Electribe sx, Yamaha dx 200. Amo registrare rumori ovunque con il mio registratore a portata di mano e trasformarli poi con diversi effetti esterni (per esempio con l’effectmachine zoom guitar g7 o i kaosspads Korg). Mi piace produrre musica in modo semplice e unico!
Sono molto curioso di sapere se nella tua testa hai in mente nuovi esperimenti, nuove uscite…insomma, qualsiasi news che ti riguarda.
La mia mente è piena di idee, ma purtroppo non posso svelarvi nulla sulle prossime uscite. Avrete modo di sentire qualcosa di nuovo molto presto…

When I had the chance of a chat with Matt John, I knew it would not be the usual interview. Just have a look on his answers, it emerges a portrait of a person who lives in his “micro world”, made of abstraction and subliminal thoughts. Someone who does not care how the music industry run, does not care to promote himself or playing in front of thousands of people, does not care to plan his future… who understand his own way of make music, loves him, also for these unusual answers… behind his madness and ingenuity, there is a hidden genius that has found admirers likes of Villalobos, Zip, and that has enchanted thousands of clubbers in Berlin and all over the world… let us drive in his spiritual journey.
You use the word “holographic” to describe you and your music (just thinking also your label “Holographic Island”). Do you want to explain the deeper meaning of this word?
Music is spatial like a hologram for me. When I’m producing, I take different parts from different times. Those are in the space then, but become to one plane in the track. It represents the complexity of the soul. You’ve to know, that a soul consists of more than one part. A soul is like a free-floating bird for me, which can move itself beyond space and time. Holographic Island reflects the idea of a platform, where those aspects can meet and having fun.
I will not repeat the same questions about your past. I would rather analyze your “modus operandi”, your way of producing. Which do you think is the key (of interpretation) of so abstract and minimal sounds?
To let loose and to fall in a completely natural way without thinking, to let your soul fly away… Everything happens by itself!
Do you think that your music is reserved to a specific group of listeners who have greater attention to the details?
I produce very multifariously. In this way I’m reaching more interested listeners from different groups! It depends from the track, which I produce.
Just based on this sentence, what do you feel to say to those who can not understand the real meaning of your music?

Listening to your every single track, it almost seems to be wrapped in hypnotic music. Do you see a sense of purity in this hypnosis?
Beside other effects, I want to teach the ears for more sensibility, to bring the listeners on a trip, a spiritual journey to come in contact with the divine power – also without drugs.
In addition to the well known names, what represent for you in few words:
1) Perlon (label and crew): pure, gentle, unique, limitless.
2) Villalobos: love, musician, helper, revolutionary, abstract micro house sound.
3) Panorama Bar: great experience and energy to play, dirty.
4) Bar 25 and (place and label). Old Bar 25 place: a reincarnation parlor, colorful artist adventure board and meeting place for creators, limitless afterhour sets, everything from pain until fun was represented there. Label: platform for newcomer.
You’re traveling in an opposite direction than many artists. What do you think about music released nowadays?
I played 80 % of my own produced music in my last sets! I was more into producing music and playing my new stuff in my recent past. I didn’t search so much anymore to be honest. But I’m sure there will be always innovated and fresh music, if you really search for it! But nowadays there’s more produced music out there which you can buy than in the past. That’s why you’ve possibly to search much more for it.
Is there any artist now that we have already not heard and you think he deserves more attention?
I’ve no idea.

I’ve no idea.
Turning to best locations where you play. What would be your ideal place (small club, open air, etc.)?
I don’t really care! The most important thing for me is the best sound system and that every person is into the music and just having a great time. It’s important for me that I reach the people with my music. I already had the same fun in front of 2000 or even 5 people on the dance floor. I really love to play in a small office container with 8 speakers for maximum 6 people. (I already did this and it really worked! Wow…)
Do you think that sometimes that many international DJ’s now are too much linked to promoting/marketing speech and sometimes they risk losing the focus on the real way to produce?
Absolutely! That’s one of the reasons, that the whole music universe is doing the experience nowadays. The focus is unfortunately more into the business as into the music. If you’re a successful DJ, the temptation is huge to get involved in things that will make you stray from the music (but that’s not new). My opinion is that one of the most major challenges is to tame your personal ego with much love and the dedication to the music. I believe, that an innovated and passionate musician will always get the right support and attention. (I want to add: I think the whole DJ scene will get more and more attention from a lot of people in the world. This is a part of the evolution right now! It’s very important to accept it and to care about the idea of real underground and to support the music and the artists, which you love. We can’t anyway change this evolution step. It seems like that the whole world has to do this experience now!).
How do you usually work for the creation of your unique sounds? Do you want to reveal in detail how is your work in studio (hardwares and softwares do you use,etc.)?
Here’s a little insight of my really small setup: PC with creamware dsp soundboard, Ableton live, sometimes Cubase, mainmixer is an old studer radiopult, 303, korg electribe sx, yamaha dx 200. I love to record noises from everywhere with my zoom handy recorder and transforming those then with different extern effectlines (for example zoom guitar g7 effectmachine or korg kaosspads). I love to produce music in an uncomplicated and unique way!
I am extremely curious to know if you have in mind new experiments, new releases… in short, all kinds of news about you.
My mind is full with ideas, but unfortunately I can’t say what the next release will be now.
Once I will be back with fresh apples in town again…
