[tab title=”Italiano”]Resident del Berghain di Berlino dal giorno della sua apertura nel 2004, fondatore di Figure e autore di alcuni dei brani più suonati sui dancefloor negli ultimi anni, Len Faki è, ormai da qualche anno, uno dei big più big della scena. Considerato un’icona, quanto un modello, o un esempio da imitare e seguire, l’artista tedesco è una delle personalità più influenti del panorama musicale contemporaneo grazie a un percorso evolutivo graduale che l’ha portato ad affermarsi su palcoscenici sempre più importanti e alla voglia, mai doma, di porsi e raggiungere obiettivi. Questa intervista è un’introspezione dentro di lui, nella sua personalità, nel suo modo di vedere e di rapportarsi con la musica e con il mondo.
Ormai da qualche anno, sei diventato un’icona nel vero senso del termine. Come ci si sente a sapere di essere un personaggio di così alto rilievo nel palcoscenico musicale? E ad essere cosciente del fatto, che nel bene o nel male, tutti, sempre e comunque, hanno gli occhi puntati su di te?
Be’, questa è una cosa che si è sviluppata nel corso degli anni anche a causa dell’attenzione che oggi viene data alla figura del dj in generale. Si, sicuramente è un grande onore essere considerati un’icona come tu dici, ma il termine in sé per sé non ha molto senso per me. Ciò che più mi tocca è la calorosa e gioiosa accoglienza che le persone mi regalano all’inizio di una serata; condividere la mia musica con loro, e con loro goderne. E’ questo ciò che conta di più per me. Si, certo… sono nel fuoco e spesso gli occhi sono puntati su di me, ma non ogni giorno, non tutto il tempo. Ho una vita abbastanza anonima a Berlino e questa forse è uno dei fattori che più amo della città.
Facendo un breve percorso della tua carriera, penso sia chiaro che la musica che proponi abbia subito un cambiamento. Da cosa dipende ciò? In merito a cosa, un artista del tuo calibro, decide di proporre un concept diverso? Quali sono i “pro”, quali i “contro”? E nella tua personale esperienza, quali sono i feedback che hai riscontrato, da pubblico e colleghi artisti, in merito a tale cambiamento?
No, in realtà non c’è nessun pensare ai “pro” e ai “contro”. Il tutto, è stato per lo più causato dall’evoluzione naturale che ho avuto nel corso del tempo. Tutti noi ci evolviamo negli anni, influenzati dai vari “Zeitgeist”, dalle esperienze che facciamo, dalle cose e dalle persone che sono intorno a noi nel nostro cammino di vita. Sono tutte queste cose insieme, infatti, che mi hanno formato e continuano a formarmi, non solo come persona, ma anche come artista. So fin troppo bene a cosa ti stai riferendo, ma a mio avviso questo è stato solo il risultato dello sviluppo delle diverse fasi che ho attraversato a livello artistico. E’ stato divertente e un grande momento quando è successo, ma ora, dopo anni non posso immaginare di proseguire ancora la strada che presi quando iniziai. Ogni cosa ha il suo tempo.
Andando più nello specifico, come riesci a conciliare le tue gig con il lavoro in studio?
L’anno scorso, finalmente, ho potuto trascorrere di nuovo un bel po’ di tempo in studio e ciò mi ha reso molto felice oltre che produttivo; con tutti i vari tour e le gig da affrontare però, ciò non è sempre possibile purtroppo. In ogni caso, io non riesco lontanamente ad immaginare di diventare uno di quei dj perennemente in tour che non dedicano più attenzione alla fase in studio… questa cosa mi toglierebbe una parte molto importante della mia vita e della personalità! Il tempo in studio è una fonte di ispirazione e di energia vitale per me! Ad oggi, si, è vero, non ho moltissimo tempo da dedicare alle sessioni in studio, ma questa situazione cambierà a breve nei prossimi mesi.
Come ti relazioni al mondo della produzione in generale? Qual è il tuo approccio con l’idea creativa e con l’uso della tecnologia?
Io sono sempre molto interessato e assolutamente open minded alle nuove tecnologie, ma devo confrontarmi purtroppo anche con le mie priorità. Il mio tempo, come detto, è limitato e anche se nutro ancora l’interesse e il desiderio di tuffarmi nei nuovi meccanismi e funzionalità, tuttavia, non è più il giusto tempo per farlo. Ho amato farlo agli albori, nei miei inizi quando passavo giorni e notti intere in studio, mangiando e dormendo lì, non stop 24/7. Oggi devo selezionare di più, combinare i mezzi con cui lavoro da anni con quelli nuovi che mi capitano per le mani. Detto in poche parole, questo ora è il mio percorso.
Per quanto riguarda le nuove generazioni di djs/producers, senti di supportarli? E se si, in che modo? Cosa pensi della dj new era in generale?
Sento molto di supportare i giovani talenti, infatti abbiamo anche nuovi artisti su Figure da poco… alcuni di loro solo da pochissimo ma credo che abbiano del grande talento, fanno ottima musica, sento la loro mentalità vicina alla mia e questo è ciò che più conta per me. Non mi interessa quanto siano popolari o quanti like abbiano su Facebook… per me conta solo la loro musica e la loro personalità. Un’etichetta ha una capacità limitata purtroppo, ma in qualche maniera possibile, cerco sempre di supportare chi merita. Regal, il mio label mate, ne è un buon esempio e sono super felice di averlo all’interno della famiglia. Costruire cose insieme è fantastico e abbiamo passato degli ottimi momenti insieme nel lavorare sul nostro ultimo EP su Figure.
Sicuramente, da molti dei nuovi dj esordienti, sei considerato uno di quelli che ce l’ha fatta. Un esempio da seguire, uno di quelli da cui trarre ispirazione. Dal canto tuo, cosa ti sentiresti di consigliare ai nuovi talenti in erba?
Lavorare duro e ancora di più per raggiungere i propri sogni e obiettivi perché ciò non accadrà da un giorno all’altro, ma passettino dopo passettino. Prendere le decisioni giuste, il che significa esattamente mettere i sacrifici davanti a tutto. Ascoltare e credere solamente in sé stessi. Bisogna credere tantissimo in sé stessi, e anche se questo non è sempre facile, si deve riuscire a non perdere il proprio sogno strada facendo, continuare a inseguirlo sempre e comunque… bisogna rimanere concentrati ed essere pronti a rinunciare a cose importanti nella propria vita pur di raggiungere i propri obiettivi.
Parlami di Figure, la label che hai fondato. Come è nata l’idea e a quale scopo? Come si è evoluta nel tempo?
La nascita di Figure è coincisa con il mio trasferimento a Berlino. Questo fatto ha determinato per me un nuovo inizio e dunque, mi sembrava fosse arrivato il momento giusto per aprire una nuova label. Sì, lo so, al giorno d’oggi questa è una cosa abbastanza “normale” ma allora invece, non era una cosa così comune da fare. In primis, avevo pensato che fosse destinata ad essere una finestra per le mie uscite in serie, ma dopo le grandi risposte per le prime release e l’interesse riscosso da molti artisti con il quale avevo legato, ho deciso di aprire Figure anche agli altri smettendo di limitarla solo a me. Ora, dopo tanti anni, le cose sono cambiate, sono migliorate, si sono evolute… Figure è diventato un marchio noto a livello internazionale e abbiamo la possibilità di portare i nostri eventi “Figure Nacht” in giro per i club e i festival in tutto il mondo. Questa è una grande cosa! Non solo siamo in grado di offrire la nostra visione di una notte perfetta, ma noi, gli artisti, abbiamo anche la possibilità di incontrarci e di trascorrere del tempo insieme. Sono letteralmente euforico di questo sviluppo, del grande team che abbiamo composto e per darvi una piccolissima anteprima – saprete gli sviluppi al più presto riguardo ciò – due dei nostri artisti sono pronti ad uscire con gli album.
E gli albori invece? Chi era Len Faki prima di essere Len Faki? Qual è il percorso che hai seguito? Quali sono stati gli artisti che più ti hanno influenzato o stimolato a diventare ciò che sei oggi?
Ah be’, direi che l’unica differenza sta nel fatto che prima ero un nerd di musica che passava la maggior parte del tempo in studio, produzione e djing soprattutto per sé stesso e per gli amici, e ora sono un nerd di musica che ha la grande occasione e fortuna di condividere la sua passione con gli altri. Si, non è che cambi tanto alla fine dai… è davvero così per ciò che possa ricordare. La musica è sempre stata super importante per me, l’ho sempre messa alla base di tutto, e le decisioni che ho fatto nella mia vita sono state sempre prese in merito alla mia passione per lei. Ai tempi, non era così facile come oggi trovare persone con mentalità simile a questa… era davvero difficile trovare chi la pensasse così! Poi, le conoscenze giuste sono arrivate, – sempre grazie e solo al collegamento con la musica, – e finalmente mi si è aperto un mondo… mi sono sentito il benvenuto, ho sentito di essere arrivato a casa.
C’è qualcosa che non rifaresti assolutamente? Non so, qualche collaborazione con qualche collega “sbagliato” ad esempio…
No, non proprio. Non vi è nulla di simile o perlomeno niente di così importante da segnalare. Ogni cosa è stata parte della mia vita e ha svolto un ruolo importante nella realizzazione di quello che sono ora. Mi è sempre piaciuto provare a vivere nel presente, non mettendo in discussione le cose che ho fatto in passato che comunque, in un modo o nell’altro, non possono essere cambiate. Mi piace pensare a ciò che potrebbe accadere oggi, pensare al futuro e ai possibili percorsi e indicazioni di vita da seguire e intraprendere.
Qual è il disco che hai rilasciato a cui sei più legato? Quello che senti più tuo, quello che ritieni possa descriverti maggiormente, che più di tutti fa capire la tua personalità.
Onestamente, è impossibile per me citarne uno. Ognuno descrive e mostra la mia personalità nel rispettivo momento della mia vita nel quale è stato composto. Seguono il mio sviluppo, la mia evoluzione… tutti descrivono in qualche maniera una parte di me e il mio modo di essere.
Un desiderio che non hai ancora realizzato, a livello lavorativo, e che ti auguri di realizzare presto? Non so, magari suonare in qualche posto che ancora ti manca, o collaborare con qualche artista e collega…
C’è una cosa che ho in mente da tanto tempo, ed è quella di produrre il mio primo album. Purtroppo, non è facile far coincidere questo desiderio con i miei impegni sul calendario al momento, ma credo e spero di farcela entro i prossimi due anni. Ho l’intenzione di non andare in tour per 2 mesi, passare molto più tempo in studio e produrlo tutto in una volta; sento che questo possa essere l’unico modo. Staremo a vedere.[/tab]
[tab title=”English”]Resident at Berghain of Berlin since the day it opened in 2004, founder of Figure and author of some of the most played tracks on the dancefloors in recent years, Len Faki is one of the biggest of the scene since long time already. Considered like an icon, as a model and as an example to imitate and follow, the German artist is one of the most influential personalities of the contemporary music scene due to a gradual evolutionary path that led him to emerge on more and more important stages and the never tamed desire to set and achieve goals. This interview is an introspection within him, his personality, his way of seeing and relating with the music and the world.
Over the last years you´ve become an icon, in the true sense of the term. How do you feel, knowing that you are such an important person in the world of music and being conscious of the fact that, or in good or in bad times, everyone always has their eyes on you?
It was a development over many years, also caused by the basic situation and attention that is given to DJs today in general. Of course it´s a great honour but the term itself doesn´t mean much to me. Touching for me is the warm welcome people are giving me and to feel their joyful anticipation at the beginning of a night. Sharing my music and enjoying it together – that matters to me. Sure, I´m in the focus sometimes and eyes are on me but it´s not all the time and not every day. I do have a pretty anonymous life in Berlin. Maybe that`s one of the things I like most about the city.
Making a short research about your career I think it is clear that your music has undergone a change. On what does that depend? About what, does an artist of your caliber, decide to offer a different concept? What are the “pros” and what are the “contras”? And in your personal experience, what are the feedbacks you noticed, from the public or colleagues about that change?
There is no thinking about “pros” and “contras”. Mostly it was caused by the natural development I made over time. We all develop on our own but influenced by zeitgeist, the experiences we make and the things and people that are around us on our path through life. This shapes me not only as a person but also as an artist. I know what you are referring too but to me it feels more like a development and different phases I am going through. It was good fun and a great time when it happened, but now, years later I couldn´t imagine to still follow this path. Everything at the proper time.
Going more into detail: how do you reconcile your gigs with your work in the studio? Talking about today, do you feel more like a dj or a producer?
Especially last year I spent more time in the studio again, which made me happy and was very productive times, but with all the touring it´s not possible anymore to do this permanently. I couldn´t imagine to be without it and only be on tour to DJ. This would take away a very important part of my life and personality. Studio time is a source of inspiration and energy for me and the base for touring. At the moment I´m more on the road with shorter studio sessions whenever possible but this will change again in a few month.
How do you relate to the world of production in general? What is your approach with the creative idea and with the use of technology?
I´m always interested and open minded for new technology but I have to compare within my options. My time is limited and even though I still have the interest and desire to dive into all the new gear and feature, nevertheless it’s not manageable for me anymore time-wise. I loved to do this in my beginnings. I spent whole days and nights in the studio, ate there, slept there, non stop 24/7. Today I have to select more. Combining the gear I work with since years with handpicked new ones. That´s pretty much my way now.
Regarding the new generation of djs/producers, do you feel like you support them? If yes, how? What’s your opinion about the djs new era in general? Your talented label mate Regal for example is one of them…
We actually do have new artists on Figure, some of them since only recently, because I believe they are super talented, they make great music, they are like minded persons and that is what counts for me. Not how popular they are, how many Facebook likes they have. It´s only about their music and their personality. A label has a limited capacity but if somehow possible I always try to support. Label mate Regal is a good example for this. I´m super happy having him within the family. Building up things together is joyful and big fun. For example, we had a great time working on our latest Ep on Figure together.
Certainly, by many of the newcomers djs, you are considered one of those who made it. An example to follow, one of those to take inspiration from. Meanwhile you, what would you suggest to the new talents?
Work hard and work even harder to reach your dreams and goals. It won´t happen from one day to another but step by step. Making the right decisions, which means first of all your own ones. Block the noise and all the suggestions but listen to yourself, believe in yourself. Believe in yourself even if it´s not always easy. Don´t lose your dream on the way but stay focused and be prepared to give up things in your life to reach your goals.
Tell me about “Figure”, the label you have founded. How was that idea born and for what purpose?
Figure was invented with my move to Berlin. It was a fresh start for me and felt like the right moment to begin a new label. Nowadays this is pretty “normal” but back then it wasn´t such common thing to do. It was intended to be a series for my own releases at first but after the great feedbacks for the first releases and the interest of befriended artists I opened the platform for others too. Now, after so many years a lot of things have changed and developed in a good way. Figure became an internationally known label and we have the chance to bring our Figure Nacht events to clubs and festivals all over the globe. This is especially great. Not only can we provide our vision of a perfect night but we, the artists, have the chance to meet and spend time together. I´m super happy about this development, about this great team we have now and to give you a small, little preview already – next steps will be taken in the nearer future – releasing albums with two of our artists. That will be very exiting and projects we are looking much forward to.
Who was Len Faki before he became Len Faki? What path did you follow? Who are the artists that have influenced or stimulated most to become what you are today?
I would say before I was a music nerd spending most of my time in the studio, producing and djing mostly for myself and friends and now I´m a music nerd that has the great chance to share my passion with others. Not so much that changed in the end. It really is like this for as long as I remember. Music was always super important for me and I made some decisions in my life only based on music and to follow my passion for sharing it. In my younger days it wasn´t this easy to find likeminded people then it is today. But through the connection of music it was possible and in this way a new and fascinating world opened up for me. One I felt welcome and home in. Inspired by many different artists, by all kinds of music.
Is there anything that you would absolutely not do again? I don´t know, some collaboration with a “wrong” colleague for example…
No, not really. There is no such thing. At least not an important one. All this was part of my life and I wouldn´t be the one I am now without them. I really always try to live in the now, not questioning things I did in the past that can´t be changed anymore. I like to think about what can happen today, about the future and possible path and directions I would like to follow on my way through life.
To which EP you released are you most connected to? The one you feel is most your own, the one you think describes and shows your personality the best.
It´s impossible to name one. Each one describes and shows my personality at the respective time of my life when I made them. They follow my development and all of them are a part of me and my way.
A desire you have not realised yet, regarding your work, and that you wish to achieve soon? I don´t know, maybe play in some place you still lack, or collaborate with any artist or colleague in particular…
There is one thing I have in my mind since long time and this is producing my first album. It´s not easy with my schedule but I believe it will happen within the next two years. I have the vision of producing it in a row, spending all my time in the studio not touring for a few months. This feels like the only way to do this. We´ll see.[/tab]
