Non c’è niente da fare, certi artisti stanno decisamente su un altro livello. E la cosa non riguarda solamente la loro musica – sebbene Forest Swords sia un elemento fuori dai comuni giochi anche musicalmente. È più qualcosa che riguarda la loro indole, l’approccio alla vita, il piacere e la necessità di andare a fondo nelle cose. È qualcosa che percepisci immediatamente quando ci parli, quando rispondono alle tue curiosità con visioni profonde e inaspettate, prendendo sul serio qualsiasi spunti di riflessione, dal rapporto con internet al confronto col pop, dalle sensazioni dell’inconscio all’essenza vera della musica. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di parlare con Forest Swords durante le tre date italiane ed è stato come aprire un libro new age e non fermarsi di leggerlo fino all’ultima pagina.
Sei uno degli artisti dal sound più unico e differente oggi, per cui la prima domanda è: come ha avuto origine il tuo stile? Come si è sviluppato e quale background ti ha condotto ad esso?
È stata una cosa molto naturale. Non avevo nessun particolare riferimento di partenza, ho solo lasciato che la musica facesse da sé, e lei ha preso la sua strada. Da giovane ascoltavo punk e rock, poi progressivamente sono andato verso il pop, il dub, l’hip hop e l’elettronica. La strada che ha condotto fino al sound di adesso è stata lunga, un’evoluzione molto graduale.
Di cosa realmente parla la tua musica? Qual è la sua vera essenza?
Emozione, fisicità, speranza.
È come se la tua musica parlasse alle sensazioni inconsce. Il top è ascoltarla al buio, ad occhi chiusi, come se fossi sul divano del tuo psicanalista…
È difficile dire alla gente come ascoltare la tua musica. Non è qualcosa che puoi prescrivere come la ricetta di un dottore, sono semplicemente contento quando chi ascolta si sente in sintonia con essa. Ma c’è un sacco di gente che viene da me e mi racconta come ascolta i miei dischi. Una volta ho ricevuto una email da un soldato in Afghanistan, diceva che ascoltava la mia musica per calmarsi. Il fatto che la mia musica abbia uno spazio tanto importante nella vita di certe persone è è stupefacente.
Dove trovi l’ispirazione quando fai musica?
Dappertutto, ma spessissimo in cose che con la musica non c’entrano. Passo un sacco di tempo in gallerie d’arte, musei, camminate all’aria aperta. Mi sento più stimolato dagli elementi visivi – una scultura, un edificio, un dipinto – innescano idee musicali nella mia testa molto più che ascoltare la canzone di qualcun altro e pensare “è una buona idea, potrei usarla“. No, questo non mi stimola granché.
Qualche anno fa c’era questa sorta di trend chiamato “hypnagogic pop”, che magari non era definito in maniera esatta ma che in generale parlava di visioni oniriche, nostalgia, new age e suggestioni vivide. In qualche modo sei stato inquadrato all’interno di questo calderone, insieme a nomi come Oneohtrix Point Never, nonostante la vostra musica non avesse pressocché nulla a che fare col pop. Forse perché suonavate molto fuori dal tempo e fuori dagli schemi, e quella definizione era generica abbastanza per abbracciare anche musica come la vostra. Ti senti in qualche modo parte di una comunità, di una scena musicale, o ti senti un artista isolato che va per la sua strada?
Non mi sono mai sentito parte di alcuna comunità, e penso che per me sia molto meglio così. Quando entri in stretto contatto con altri artisti la gente inizia automaticamente a fare delle assunzioni su di te e sulla tua musica. Mi fa piacere stare fuori da tutto ciò, in qualche modo. Gli artisti con cui mi sento connesso non fanno necessariamente musica che suona come la mia, ma abbiamo condiviso i palchi dei festival e sono diventati amici: come The Haxan Cloak o i Demdike Stare. In ogni caso mi sento piuttosto solitario, in termini di collocazione nella musica elettronica o in quella underground. Sento di stare andando su un percorso tutto mio. E in qualche modo ne sono fiero.
Che musica ascolti di norma?
Ascolto tanta musica elettronica, hip hop e pop. Ora che sto invecchiando passo meno tempo tra i blog o comunque per internet, alla caccia di nuova musica. Preferisco fidarmi degli amici che mi suggeriscono le nuove uscite. Passo tanto tempo ascoltando radio hip hop statunitensi, e gli amici più aggiornati sull’underground mi danno sempre le dritte giuste sui nuovi dischi e le nuove tracce di artisti elettronici. Purtroppo non ho più né tempo né pazienza per passare ore ad ascoltare nuova musica.
Scorgo una strana relazione tra la tua musica e i nostri tempi, i tempi di internet: la tua musica suona completamente differente da qualsiasi altra musica che normalmente si trova sul web, ma nello stesso tempo è esattamente quel tipo di musica che qualcuno si aspetterebbe di trovare in un angolo remoto di internet. Non saprei dire se ci sarebbe stato spazio per musica come questa prima di internet. Tu come la vedi?
Son contento che internet esista, senza di esso io non starei rispondendo a questa intervista e non starei facendo quel che faccio oggi. È una cosa difficile da analizzare, sul serio. ‘Forest Swords’ è sempre esistito insieme a internet, sono intrinsecamente legati in qualche modo. Non posso separarli nella mia testa. Eppure, se internet finisse domani, continuerei lo stesso a fare musica. Non saprei dire però se la mia musica suonerebbe come suona adesso. Sarei curioso di scoprirlo.
Ho letto alcune tue interviste sul web, sembra che ti piacca molto il pop/r’n’b. Ti ho visto parlare bene di Sugababes, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliot. Son nomi così diversi dal tuo genere di musica, come lo spieghi?
Io non li vedo così differenti, davvero. Ma è difficile per me essere obiettivo in merito. Ho speso gran parte dei miei anni di adolescente su quel tipo di musica, e sono tutti degli artisti brillanti, che fanno bene il loro mestiere. Tutti di grande energia. Credo che quel che stia facendo oggi è una forma molto strana di pop o hip hop, forse. Dentro ci sono sicuramente degli elementi della musica che amo. E mi piacerebbe da matti sentire il rap di Missy Elliot su “Thor’s Stone”.
Scorgo un’evoluzione nella tua musica, dal primo “Dagger Paths” a “Engravings”. Nel primo album la tua musica suonava molto “fuori dal mondo”, astratta ed evocativa, mentre in tempi più recenti sembra aver assunto in qualche modo più concretezza. Non saprei dire da dove viene questa percezione, forse le ritmiche che oggi sono più presenti, la musica è più definita.
Assolutamente vero. Per “Engravings” ho provato a razionalizzare diverse cose. Ho riascoltato “Dagger Paths” e l’ho trovato molto slegato, un po’ dispersivo in certe parti. Mi piaceva fare musica di quel tipo in quel periodo, ma per “Engravings” ero a un punto della mia vita in cui volevo fare canzoni che suonassero concrete e forti su più livelli, invece che rigirarsi su sé stesse per otto minuti. Ho voluto far canzoni che avessero un impatto un tantino più forte, che potessero conquistare le persone in maniera più diretta.
Uno dei suoni più riconoscibili nella tua musica è quella chitarra vibrata, che genera sempre un’atmosfera surreale. Come selezioni i suoni che faranno parte della tua musica? Da dove provengono?
È difficile da dire – semplicemente prendo quelli che risuonano dentro di me, in un certo senso. Mi ci vuole un’eternità a trovare la giusta consistenza e i giusti suoni. È anche per questo che impiego così tanto tempo a concludere una traccia – ogni elemento deve essere “a posto” per me, altrimenti non vedo alcun motivo di pubblicarla. E come muovere una chiave dentro una serratura, a un certo punto il meccanismo scatta. Trovare la giusta melodia, il giusto ritmo, è esattamente la stessa cosa.
I video di “Thor’s Stone” e “The Weight Of Gold” sono visivamente molto affascinanti. Partecipi in maniera attiva alla realizzazione dei video?
Sì, passo diverso tempo avanti e indietro con i registi dei video. È un processo molto collaborativo. Normalmente sono io stesso che mi occupo del mio design e dei visual, quindi per me è difficile dare l’intero controllo del video a un’altra persona, ma i registi con cui ho lavorato erano molto professionali e mi hanno ispirato fiducia. Alla fine ero molto contento del risultato, penso che quelle immagini stiano benissimo insieme alla mia musica.
Per chi non ha mai visto i tuoi show: come sei live?
Mi esibisco con un bassista, James, io suono la chitarra e gli strumenti elettronici su di lui. Ho speso tanto tempo lavorando sulle proiezioni e sui visual dei miei live – ho lavorato con Sam, un mio amico di Liverpool, per gli elementi visuali di ogni traccia che suono. Per i festival, Sam mi raggiunge e fa una sorta di set audiovisivo sulla mia musica. Ci tengo che i miei live siano un’esperienza più potente e immersiva possibile.[/tab]
[tab title=”English”]There is nothing you can do, some artists definitely belong to another level. It’s something not strictly related to their music – though even musically, Forest Swords is absolutely uncommon. It’s more about their character, the approach to life, the pleasure and the need to go to the heart of things. It’S something that you see immediately when you talk with them, when they answer to your questions with deep and unexpected visions, taking seriously any thought, from the relation with internet to the interaction with pop, from the feelings of the unconscious to the real essence of the music. We’ve been pleased to talk with Forest Swords during his three dates on Italy, and it was like opening a new age book and don’t stop reading until last page.
You are one of the artists with the most unique sound of today. So first question is: how has your style born, originally? How did you develop this sound and which kind of background led you to it?
It was very natural. I didn’t start with any reference points, I just let the music happen, and it directed itself. I was into punk and rock music when I was younger, then gradually got into pop, dub, hip hop and electronic music. It’s been a very gradual path to get where I am now.
What really is your music about? What is its real essence?
Emotion, physicality, hope.
It seems that your music leads with the unconscious feelings. The best is listen to it on the dark, closing your eyes, like you are on the coach of your psychoanalyst…
It’s difficult to prescribe or tell people how to listen to your music – I’m just pleased people are connecting with it. But I do get a lot of people coming up to me after shows and telling me how they listen to my records. I got an email once from a soldier serving in Afghanistan who said he listens to my music to calm him down. It’s pretty amazing that people let my music into their life like that.
Where do you find the inspiration in making music?
Everywhere, but quite often it’s anything that’s not music. I spend a lot of time in art galleries, museums, walking around. I find it more interesting and challenging to have visual elements – a sculpture, or a building, or a painting – spark off a musical idea in my head, rather than listening to someone else’s song and think “that’s a cool idea, I’ll use that”. That doesn’t excite me at all.
Some year ago there was this kind-of trend called “hypnagogic pop”, that maybe was not exactly well defined but it was about dreaming visions, nostalgia, new age and vivid suggestions. You have been placed on that area, together with people like Oneohtrix Point Never, even if your music had nothing to do with pop. Probably because you was so out-of-time and out-of-schemas and that definition was general enough to include also your music. Do you feel part of a music community or a music scene today, or you feel like one man, following your own direction?
I’ve never felt part of a music scene or a community, and I think it’s benefited me for the best. When you’re looped in with other artists people will automatically make assumptions about you and your music. I’m pleased that it stands apart in some ways. The artists that I feel a connection with aren’t necessarily making music that sounds like mine, but we have shared festival bills and so I’ve come to know them as friends: the likes Haxan Cloak, Demdike Stare. But I feel pretty solitary in terms of where I fit in within electronic or underground music. It definitely feels like I’m walking my own path. I’m proud of that, in a way.
Which music do you listen to, usually?
I listen to a lot of electronic music, hip hop and pop. As I’ve got older, I’ve spent less time on blogs and the internet hunting out new music. I prefer to have friends recommend me new things. I spend a lot of time listening to US hip hop radio, and my friends who are into underground music will always recommend me new records and tracks by electronic artists too. I just don’t have the time or the patience to spend hours listening to new music unfortunately.
I see a strange relationship between your music and our current age, the internet age: your music sounds different to any other music that you can find on web, but it’s just that kind of music that some people expect to find in some far place of internet. I cannot say if there was room for this kind of music before internet. What do you think? What is the relation between internet and you/your music?
I’m pleased the internet exists, because without it I wouldn’t be answering this interview or doing the things I’m doing. It’s very difficult to think about, really, because ‘Forest Swords’ has only ever existed at the same time as the internet so they are intrinsically linked in some way. I can’t separate them in my head. But even if the internet ended tomorrow, I would still make music. Whether my music would sound like it does at the moment, I’m not so sure. I’d be curious to find out.
I’ve read some interview on web, it seems that you like a lot of pop music. I’ve read you talking about Sugababes, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliot. It’s so different from your kind of music, how can you explain this?
I don’t think it’s that different, really, but it’s difficult for me to be objective about it. A lot of my teenage years were spent listening to those kind of musicians, and they’re all brilliant artists, doing their own thing. All very powerful. I guess what I’m making is just a very weird form of pop or hip hop, perhaps. I think there’s definitely elements in there of music I like – for example, I’d love to hear Missy Elliot rap over ‘Thor’s Stone’.
I see an evolution in your music, from “Dagger Paths” to “Engravings”. In your first album your music was so “out of the world”, so abstract and evocative, whereas in recent days your music has somehow more concreteness. I don’t know where this perception comes from, maybe the rhythms now are more present, music is more defined.
I totally agree. For ‘Engravings’ I tried to streamline a lot of things. I listened back to ‘Dagger Paths’ and it seemed very loose, a little too long in parts. I enjoyed making music like that at the time, but for ‘Engravings’ I was at a point in my life where I wanted to make songs that felt concrete and strong in different ways, rather than tripping out for 8 minutes. I wanted to make tracks that had a little more impact, that people could engage with in a very direct way.
One of the most recognisable sounds on your music is that guitar twang, that always creates a surreal atmosphere. How do you select the sounds for your music? Where do they come from?
It’s hard to say – I just pick sounds that resonate with me on some level. I spend ages finding the right textures and sounds. It’s partly why I spend so long finishing tracks – every element has to be ‘right’ for me otherwise I don’t see any point in releasing it. It’s like moving a key in a door, and then suddenly it clicks. That’s what it’s like finding the right melody or drum beat or whatever when I’m making a track.
The videos of “Thor’s Stone” and “The Weight Of Gold” are very visually fascinating. Do you play an active role on video making, on focusing the idea, or it’s just your music that inspires the director?
Yes, I spent some time going back and forth with the directors of the videos. It was very much a collaborative process. I do all of my design and visuals normally, so it was difficult to give over control for music videos to other people, but the directors were super professional, had a great track record, and I felt that I could trust them. In the end, I was really happy with the results and I think they fit together nicely.
For who has never seen you shows: how are your live performances?
I play live with a bass player, James, and I play electronics and guitar along with him. I’ve also spent a lot of time working on projections and visuals for the live set – I worked with Sam, a friend of mine from Liverpool, on creating a visual element for every track we play live. For festival sets we play, Sam comes along and does live AV sets for me, too. I want my live shows to be as immersive and powerful as possible.[/tab]
