Se uniamo una leggenda e un astro nascente quale può essere il risultato? Bhe, la musica non è di certo matematica, ma in questo caso cosa ne sarebbe uscito era abbastanza scontato. Stiamo parlando degli Art Department, una combinazione di recente formazione, ma con radici che affondano nel profondo del panorama house/techno nord americano. Kenny Glasgow e Jonny White, questi i nomi dei due componenti, sono amici e sostenitori del movimento da molto tempo, ma non si erano mai cimentati in qualcosa che prevedesse la loro collaborazione. Questo fino a quando Damian Lazarus non ha voluto fortemente un loro remix di Rix MC per la sua Crosstown, ed è da li che sono nati gli Art Department. La loro prima esibizione dal vivo è stata al Get Lost Event di Crosstown Rebels al WMC 2010 e da li in poi non si sono più fermati. Produzioni, collaborazioni con artisti importanti e perle dalle quali molti faticano ancora a riprendersi come la ben nota “Without You”. Recentemente hanno rinnovato la fiducia alla loro collaborazione con Seth Troxler facendo uscire “Living The Life”, singolo che in pochissimo tempo ha già contagiato moltissima gente. Son passati anche alle nostre latitudini e quest’estate saranno presenti all’Hideout Festival di Pag. Come vedete c’è molta carne al fuoco e interessanti punti di discussione, una chiacchierata con loro sarà di certo interessante.

La vostra combinazione sta contagiando gran parte dei clubbers sparsi per il mondo, come è nato il progetto Art Department?
Per tutti e due è stata un’evoluzione naturale. Lavoravamo insieme su altri progetti e abbiamo suonato per anni agli stessi party, così quando l’idea è venuta fuori non ci abbiam messo molto a pensare quale sarebbe stato il passo successivo.
Siete dei perfetti esempi della nuova ondata house/techno americana, come definireste questo nuovo corso?
E’ difficile definire questo nuovo sound che sta movimentando la musica house di questi tempi. Sostanzialmente si tratta del fatto di riportare la musica e lo spirito agli albori, ma non è un qualcosa di esclusivamente legato al Nord America. Penso che etichette come Crosstown, No 19, Hot Creations, Visionquest stiano portando avanti questo “nuovo suono” in modo simile, e come collettivo stiano creando un’ondata che di fatto non può essere fermata.
Parlando di “Without You” è chiaro il riferimento a Seth Troxler, con il quale avete rilasciato anche “Living the Life”. Com’è il vostro rapporto con Seth e cosa vi unisce musicalmente?
Seth è il nostro uomo! Musicalmente parlando abbiamo tutto in comune. Il suo background musicale, verso tutti i generi, è molto profondo, specialmente se si considera la sua età. Siamo tutti molto aperti e appassionati della qualità che si può ritrovare all’interno di tutto lo spettro musicale. Quando si ama la musica come facciamo noi e quando si hanno le stesse basi si instaurano delle solide fondamenta per un’amicizia. Oltre a questo abbiamo la tendenza sempre a divertirci ai party.
Ora siete parte di un progetto, pensate di continuare la vostra carriera come singoli o ormai vi vedete solo come Art Department?
Non abbiamo pianificato nulla al di fuori del progetto Art Department, almeno riguardo al campo della dance music. Potremmo smettere di scrivere canzoni ora o tra qualche tempo e farlo per altri progetti, ma ora tutti i nostri sforzi stanno andando tutti all’interno di quello che è poi il nostro più grande successo, ossia Art Department.
Recentemente siete stati in Italia, come avete trovato la scena musicale da queste parti?
Adoriamo suonare in Italia, penso che abbiam suonato li più che in ogni altro posto. Li la gente è molto dentro a quello che facciamo, sono molto recettivi e orientati su quello che suoniamo. Penso che sia un momento molto eccitante per l’Italia, grandi giovani artisti la rappresentano e stanno salendo alla ribalta, parlo di Clockwork e anche di Tale Of Us. Loro stanno contribuendo alla formazione della cultura.
Parlando di esibizioni sappiamo che prenderete parte all’Hideout Festival di Pag, cosa potete dirci di questa data e cosa vi aspettate dal festival?
Non posso dirti nulla dato che questa sarà per noi la prima volta, ma siamo molto fieri di far parte del festival con i Rebels.
E dopo il festival? Cosa c’è nel futuro degli Art Department?
Saremo in tour, e ancora in tour, e in tour ancora. Con un sacco di delirio, del tempo dedicato allo studio e molto poco tempo per dormire.

If we combine a legend and a rising star, what could we get? You know, music is not mathematic but in this case the result was pritty obvious. We are talking about Art Department, a newly formed combination, but deeply rooted in the house/techno scene of North America. Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White, these are the two componets of the combo. Old time friends and promoter of the movement have never worked togeter since the collaboration with Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebel, remixing Rex MC. Their first exibition was at Get Lost Event di Crosstown Rebels in WMC 2010, and from that time they never get stopped. Production, collaboration with important artist and some very special gift like “Without You”, something that stil stun so many people. Recently they confermed the connection with Seth Troxler releasing “Living The Life”, a single with a great feedback in a short time. They stopped also in our latitudes and this summer they will be at the Hideout Festival in Pag. So as you can see there are so many stuff to talk about, a chat with them would be very interesting.

Your combination is infecting so many clubbers all over the world, so how was born the Art Department project?
It was really a natural evolution for both of us as individuals. We had been working closely on other projects and djing the same parties for years so when the idea was first voiced, it didn’t take much pondering to decide weather or not it was the next move.
You are a perfect example of the new wave of house/techno from North America, how can you define this new course?
It’s hard to define this new sound thats sweeping house music right now. It’s definitely about bringing music and soul back into the equation but its not something exclusive to NA. I think that labels like Crosstown, No19, Hot Creations, Visionquest, all with their own take on this “new sound” are doing something very similar and as a collective are creating this tidal wave that can’t really be stopped.
Speaking about “Without You” there is a clear reference to Seth Troxler, with wich you release also “Living the Life”. How is your relationship with Seth, and what have you in common, musically speaking?
Seth is our boy! Musically speaking we have everything in common really. His roots in all genres of music go way back, especially when you consider his age. We’re all very open minded musically and passionate about quality across a broad spectrum of genres. When you love music as much as we do and have that common ground it’s a really solid foundation for a friendship. We all tend to enjoy a good party as well.
Now you are part of a project, do you imagine to continue your solo career or you almost see you as Art Department?
We don’t plan to do anything outside of the Art Department project, at least not in dance music. We may end up writing a song here and there on our own or for other projects down the road but all of our efforts are going into what’s been our greatest success and that’s Art Department.
Recently you’ve been in Italy, how did you find the musical scene here?
We love playing in Italy, i think we play there more than anywhere else really. They’re really into what we’re doing so the people are so receptive and up for it when we play for them. I think it’s a really exciting time for Italy with great young artists coming up and representing now like Clockwork and Tale Of Us too and that really contributes to the culture there.
Talking about exibition we know that you will be part of Hideout Festival in Pag, what can you tell us about this festival and what do you expect from this gig?
I can’t really tell you anything about it since this will be our first time but we’re excited to be a part of it with the Rebels.
And after the festival? What is there in the Art Department’s future?
Touring, more touring, and then more touring. With a shit load of raving, studio time and very little sleep along the way.
