L’Olanda si sa, è la patria della scena dance/electro mondiale: ogni anno manifestazioni come l’ADE la consacrano regina indiscussa e tra i suoi figli si possono annoverare dj come Tiësto e Armin Van Buuren o Ferry Corsten, Afrojack, Sidney Samson, Chuckie, Hardwell, Laidback Luke, Fedde Le Grand, il duo Bingo Players e Headhunterz. Tra questi innumerevoli talenti è riuscito a farsi largo la giovane promessa Apster, che nonostante la sua breve carriera, ha già riscosso un successo mondiale. Qui ci racconta un po’ com’è avvenuto il suo esordio e come si districa fra i suoi mille impegni.
Apster. Perché questo nome?
I miei amici mi chiamavano così quando ero alle scuole superiori. E’ solo un’abbreviazione del mio nome vero, Abdesamad Ben Abdelaouid, che è molto più lungo.
Com’è nata la tua passione per la musica elettronica?
La mia passione per la musica elettronica si è sviluppata in un momento successivo. Prima sono partito ascoltando hip hop, r’n’b. Poi, sui 16 anni, la musica elettronica mi ha colpito molto: mi piaceva sia ascoltarla ché ballarla ed ho proprio pensato: “Vorrò fare anche io questa musica un giorno”. E così ho iniziato.
Come sei diventato dj?
Non sono riuscito a finire la scuola ed ho iniziato a suonare in un bar della mia città, Tilburg, insieme al mio amico Marlon Flohr dei Bassjackers. Poi da qui piano piano è nata tutta la mia carriera.
Quale musica ti influenza?
Sono inspirato da un sacco di generi musicali diversi. Dalla musica marocchina all’hip hop, uk garage, il soul e la latin house music. Mi piace molto Congorock, per esempio. Ora come ora ascolto davvero un po’ di tutto e cerco di prenderne il meglio per poi confluirlo nella musica elettronica secondo il mio stile ed il mio filtro.
Quando pensi che la tua carriera abbia avuto la svolta?
Dopo una paio di anni che avevo iniziato a far musica, ho avuto l’opportunità di inviare un po’ del mio materiale ad Afrojack, che ha iniziato a suonare i miei dischi durante i suoi set. Mi chiese poi se qualcuno mi aveva già prodotto o se avevo avuto qualche offerta. Gli risposi di no e quindi mi propose di lavorare insieme nella sua etichetta Wall Recordings. E lo feci. Da allora sono sicuro di aver fatto il salto di qualità e che questo episodio abbia sicuramente fatto la differenza.
Infatti Afrojack, ti ha voluto poi come remixer ufficiale della sua traccia “Take Over Control ft. Eva Simons” e lo hai seguito nel suo tour australiano nel 2011, qual è oggi il tuo rapporto con lui?
Siamo grandi amici, facciamo musica insieme e adesso esco in esclusiva solo sulla sua etichetta.
Come prepari il tuo set?
La mia prerogativa è quella di proporre sempre la mia musica, in dose massiccia. Credo che questo sia ciò che caratterizza lo stile del mio set. Di solito per preparare un set ed evitare errori, come prima cosa, creo sul mio computer delle cartelle con il nome del club o dell’evento in cui suonerò, in cui metto il materiale che credo poter suonare in quella determinata situazione. A volte capita anche che faccio delle ricerche: è importante capire cosa piace in un determinato paese rispetto ad un altro.
Sei in grado di produrre in tour?
Porto sempre con me il mio computer. Quando so di poter rimanere più di un giorno in un determinato posto, porto con me anche altra strumentazione e cerco sempre di trovare un po’ di tempo per una sorta di “sessione studio”.
Quale è il tuo rapporto con i social network? Tendi a coltivare in prima persona il rapporto con i tuoi fans?
Ho un manager ma cerco di intrattenere i rapporti con le persone più che posso, sia su Facebook ché su Twitter. Cerco di tenere le persone aggiornate su quello che sto facendo tramite post e caricando foto con cui li rendo partecipi. Credo sia molto importante questo aspetto ed è per questo che mi prendo il tempo per coltivarlo.
Ci sono dei consigli che ti senti di dare a chi sta iniziando la carriera nel mondo della musica?
Di questi tempi è molto difficile iniziare perché ci sono tantissimi dj/producer in circolazione che vorrebbero “sfondare”. La chiave è quella di continuare a far musica, tentare di farla conoscere a più persone possibili e metterle nelle condizioni di poterla apprezzare. Questo consente di crearsi un buon network di base. Nel produrre musica poi bisogna metterci tutta la passione e l’impegno possibile. Capita però di perdere l’ispirazione: in questi casi posso solo dire che il segreto è continuare, perseverare nel proprio intento senza mai rinunciare al proprio obbiettivo.
Hai già collaborato in passato con Bassjackers e Joey Suki, hai prodotto il brano di Pitbull “Pause”, hai mixato Quintino, Hardwell e Bingo Players. Con chi vorresti lavorare in futuro?
In futuro vorrei sicuramente continuare a collaborare con Afrojack. Mi piace molto lo stile dei Bingo Players e non escludo succeda ancora qualcosa con loro ed anche con Firebeatz, di cui oltre ad esserne grande amico, ne sono anche grande fan. Il mio più grande sogno però sarebbe quello di lavorare con Tiesto.
Progetti futuri?
Proseguirò il mio tour che mi porterà probabilmente a Miami, in marzo, ma sto ancora aspettando il mio visto. In aprile seguirò Afrojack nel suo tour in Asia, che toccherà il Giappone, Cina, Indonesia, India… L’estate invece sarò molto impegnato a Ibiza. La mia idea adesso è quella di stare in tour il più possibile. Quando magari sarò più vecchio, mi vedrò meglio a produrre in studio per gli altri.

Apster. Why this name?
Cause my friends used to call me Apster when I was at the high school. It doesn’t have a meaning but it is just a short name cause my name, Abdesamad Ben Abdelaouid, is longer and difficult.
How is born your passion for the electronic music?
The passion for the electronic music is developed later. I started listening to hip hop, r’n’b. When I was older, around sixteen, I started to go out and the electronic music catch me and I though: “I love it, I love to dance it. I wanna make it someday”. After that I really start to make it.
How did you became a dj? What is your story?
I quit school, I didn’t finished it and I started to play in a bar with a really good friend of mine, Marlon Flohr from Bassjackers, and then I started to play often and often. My music was going good and so I’ve decided to go on.
Which are your musical influences?
I’m insired of a lot of kind of music. I’m from Marocco so I like music from there, Hip hop and r’n’b as I’ve said, uk garage, soul… I listen to everything… I try to grab some elements from every kind of music and work in it on my own way. I love also latin house music: Congorock is an inspiration for me too.
When do you think that you career has “the switch”?
I was making music from 2 o 3 years and I started to send my records to Afrojack: he started to play them during his dj set and to support me. He was very interested to me and he asked me to work in his label ‘Wall Recordings’. So I accepted and it was a great opportunity for me: my career grown faster and better.
In fact, Afrojack, wanted you then as official remixer of his track “Take Over Control ft. Eva Simons” and you have followed him in his Australian tour on the 2011. What is now your relationship with him?
We are really good friends, we are making music together and I exclusively released with this label now.
How do you prepared your dj set?
I always try to play my own music: this is Apster style. I prepare myself creating some folders where I put my music, that I named with the name of the club/event where I will go. Sometimes I check which kind of records are hot in a particular area, trying to adapt my set but always in my own way.
Are able to product when you are on tour?
I always bring my laptop: when I know I can stay more than a day in a certain place, I carry with me also other instruments and I always try to find a little time to a “study session”.
What is your relationship with the social networks?
I have a manager for handle this but I always try to do as much as I can by myself: I know that people like when you post some pics on fb. I want to let people know of what I am doing. It’s very important to keep people update on fb or twitter.
Do you have any advices to give to those who began his music career?
By this time it is very difficult to start because there are so many djs in circulation that would “break”. The key is to continue to make music, try to make it known to as many people as possible and let people love it. This allows to create a good network. When you produce music you have to put all the passion and commitment as possible. However, sometimes you can lose the inspiration: in this case I can only say that the secret is to continue, keep going and never give up.
You have already collaborated with Bassjackers and Joey Suki, you have produced the Pitbull song “Pause”, you have mixed Quintino, Hardwell and Bingo Players. Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
In the future I would love to continue working with Afrojack. I really like the style of the Bingo Players and do not rule out something happening again with them and also with Firebeatz, which in addition to being a great friend I am also a big fan. My biggest dream, however, would be to work with Tiesto.
What’s next?
I’ll Continue my tour that will take me probably in Miami, in March, but I’m still waiting for my visa. In April I will follow Afrojack in his Asian tour, which will touch the Japan, China, Indonesia, India… The summer will be very busy in Ibiza. My idea now is to stay on the road as much as possible. Maybe when I’m older, I shall be better in the studio to produce for others.
