Padre dell’hardcore prima e dell’hardstyle poi, fondatore e proprietario della Scantraxx, l’etichetta che da oltre dieci anni è leader pressoché incontrastata del settore, The Prophet è una di quelle figure che sembrano esserci sempre state, nel mondo della musica elettronica. E quando uno così, dopo oltre vent’anni di carriera, decide di dare alle stampe il suo primo album, non puoi lasciartelo scappare!
Sei una delle icone più longeve del panorama hardstyle, essendo uno dei precursori dell’hard dance fin dai primi anni ’90: raccontaci qualcosa dei tuoi inizi, del tuo background e della scena di quegli anni.
In quegli anni c’era praticamente solo l’house, io e alcuni altri abbiamo iniziato a creare, per così dire, quel suono distorto. Abbiamo creato l’Hardcore prima e l’hardstyle poi. Ora quei suoni distorti li puoi sentire in praticamente tutti i generi di musica elettronica.
Hai mixato diverse compilation, ma “Louder” è il tuo primo vero album, giusto? Come mai arriva solo ora?
Credo che questo fosse il momento più opportuno, è anche una sorta di coronamento alla mia carriera.
Quanto tempo ti ci è voluto per completarlo?
9 mesi, come un bambino. Un bambino molto “rumoroso”!
Nell’album hai collaborato con artisti più che noti, come Noisecontrollers, Dj Adaro e Rob Gee, ma anche talenti emergenti come The Anarchist e Audiotricz, come li hai scelti? Hai progetti di altre collaborazioni con le nuove leve, come Code Black o The Atmosfearz, per esempio?
La scelta non è stata difficile: stili diversi, producers molto talentuosi, con cui è stato divertente lavorare! Certo, sono aperto praticamente a tutto!
Nell’hardstyle dell’ultimo periodo, il kick bass sembra aver quasi completamente sostituito il reverse bass: tu quale preferisci, e perché?
Hmmm, bella domanda! A dire la verità, mi piacciono entrambi! Dipende da come sono usati, sai… Ascoltando attentamente il mio album, capirai cosa intendo!
Ho notato che oggi alcuni artisti utilizzano kick un po’ più leggeri rispetto a prima, credi sia una nuova tendenza?
Io penso che stia nascendo una sorta di divisione nella scena hard, tra gli artisti più melodici e i “raw heroes”. Credo si tratti di una scelta ben precisa, più che di una tendenza.
Il tuo album, e le tue produzioni in genere, sono zeppe dei tipici “screech” hardstyle: come li crei, di solito? Hai un synth, hardware o vst che utilizzi principalmente per questo tipo di suoni?
C’è un lungo processo, dietro. The Anarchist è davvero molto bravo a creare gli screech! Io di solito uso l’Access Virus TI2 e Massive per farli, sono tra i miei synth preferiti!
Ti manca, ogni tanto, suonare con il “Dreamteam”? Hai mai pensato di tornare all’hardcore, magari sotto qualche alias?
I tempi vanno e vengono. Mi è piaciuto quasi tutto dell’esperienza con il “Dreamteam”, me ora guardo avanti, quindi si, ora mi sto concentrando anche su roba nuova per e con il mio alter ego, The Masochist: è resuscitato!
Dopo che Showtek prima ed Headhunterz poi hanno abbandonato l’hard dance, quali sono secondo te i nuovi orizzonti dell’hardstyle? Credo che subirà l’influenza di un certo tipo di EDM mainstream?
Tutti i generi si influenzano tra loro, basti pensare a quanti dj EDM apprezzino e talvolta suonino alcune tracce hardstyle nei loro set! Si capisce ben presto che tutte le possibilità sono aperte!
L’hardstyle, nell’immaginario comune, è associata a grandi festival open air, o ad arene stracolme, con migliaia di persone che saltano: come viene vissuta, invece, nei club? Quel mood si mantiene anche in spazi più ristretti?
Assolutamente, lo spirito con cui viene vissuta non cambia! Anzi, il più delle volte é anche meglio, grazie a quell’atmosfera più intima e accogliente che i club hanno rispetto ai festival!
Cosa pensi della scena hard dance italiana? Come ricordi le tue gig da noi?
Il pubblico è caldissimo, ricordo dancefloor straripanti di gente e grandi serate!
I giganti dell’hardstyle, Scantraxx e Q-Dance, sembrano avere una sorta di monopolio, la prima come label, la seconda nell’organizzazione e promozione degli eventi: è così?
In realtà no, come ho detto prima, tutto influenza e viene influenzato: quando noi facciamo qualcosa, stimoliamo altri a fare altre cose, se migliori o peggiori poi sta a loro, ma questo tiene attivi anche noi, ed è solo un bene!
Dopo “Louder”, quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?

He is the father of Hardcore and Hardstyle, and founder of Scantraxx, the label which leads the hard dance records market. The Prophet is one of that characters that seems to have always been part of the electronic music scene. And when an icon like him decides to release his first artist album, after a brilliant twenty-years long career, you just can’t let him go without having a chat with him.
You’re one of the most long-lived icons in Hardstyle, since you’re into hard dance from the early 90’s: can you tell us something about your beginning and backgrounds, and about the scene back in the days?
Back in the days there was just house music, me and a few others created the distorted sounds so to speak. We created Hardcore and later Hardstyle. And now you hear distorted sound in almost every genre in electronic dance music.
You’ve done several mixed compilations, but “Louder” is your very first artist album, isn’t it? Why just now?
The moment was there to do it. It is also a crown on my already long lasting career.
How long did it take to complete the whole album?
Like the birth of a child; 9 months, “A loud baby!”
In “Louder” you had some collaborations with well known artists such as Noisecontrollers, DJ Adaro, Rob Gee, but also with emerging talents like The Anarchist and Audiotricz. How did you choose them? Are you thinking about collaborating with other young guys, like Atmozfears or Code Black, for example?
The choices were not difficult; different genres, very talented producers and fun to work with. Easy so to say, and sure I am open to almost everything!
In today’s hardstyle, the kick bass seems to have totally replaced the reverse bass: which one you like the most, and why?
Hmmmm, tough question, actually I love both. It depends on how it’s used you know. When you listen to my album you will understand what I mean.
I’ve heard that some artists are using kicks that are a little bit softer than before, is that a new trend in hardstyle production?
What I think is that we get a sort of separated scene now, the more melodic producers and the raw heroes. I think it is more of a choice and not a trend.
Your album is rich of the typical hardstyle screeches: how do you create them? Do you have any favorite hardware or Vst to do those particular sounds?
It’s a process when you make them. My friend The Anarchist is very, very good in creating screeches. You can hear a lot of his sounds on my album too! Access Virus TI2 and Massive are the favorite synths.
Do you miss playing with “The Dreamteam”? Have you ever thought to go back to hardcore, maybe with an alias?
Times come and times go. I enjoyed almost everything with The Dreamteam, but I look forward. So yeah, busy again to create new shizzle for and with my alter ego The Masochist, he has resurrected!
After guys like Showtek and HeadHunterz left hard dance, which new horizons do you see for hardstyle? Will it be influenced by some kind of mainstream EDM?
Everything affects each other, when you know that almost all the electronic dance music dj’s like and play some of the hardstyle tracks, then all the options are open.
Hardstyle is often associated with big open air festivals or full-crowded arenas with thousand of people jumping, but what about the clubs? Does it keep those vibes also in smaller places?
Of course it does! Most of the times it is even more cozy!

Hot and sweaty, totally packed places which rock big time!
Big realities such as Scantraxx and Q-dance seem to have a sort of monopoly in the Hard scene, the first one as a label, and the second in events and promoting: is that true?
No, as I said before, “Everything affects each other,” so when we do certain things, it will stimulate others to do similar things, better or worse, that’s up to them. That keeps us sharp too and that’s a good thing!
