Norman Doray proviene dalla famosa scuola francese, che ormai detiene il primato da più di 20 anni per tutto ciò che riguarda la musica dance d’avanguardia. Si può dire che è nato dai Daft Punk. E’ giovane ed ha talento. Si è fatto strada con produzioni come “Tobita”, “Chase The Sun” e “Tweet”, oltre che a collaborazioni come remixer per Dirty South o Toni Braxton. Dopo il successo nel 2011 ottenuto da “Kalifornia” in collaborazione con David Tort – in occasione della compilation “Norman Doray presents Strictly Ibiza to Amsterdam”, le sue produzioni hanno raggiunto un tale successo tanto da essere invitato a suonare nei più prestigiosi clubs a livello mondiale: MoS a Londra, Green Valley in Brasile, Pacha ad Ibiza, Playhouse a L.A. e Zouk a Singapore, senza dimenticarci del Tomorrowland, l’Ultra Music Festival, Midwest, Sunburn e il Creamfields. Norman può vantare di essere stato invitato, nell’aprile 2011 al tour inglese di David Guetta, e di aver suonato nella leggendaria Brixton Academy a Londra.
Norman, hai un grande potenziale, che cosa caratterizza il tuo groove?
Non so, cerco di fare musica per ballare, adoro quando accade, mi piace quando si ha un mix di ritmo tribale che è più forte dalla musica elettronica… il mix tra i due può creare la magia a volte!
Sei un giovane e stimato producer, in questo momento storico, dove la musica elettronica si sposta dai clubs al teatro; secondo te quale ruolo può giocare e quale evoluzione avrà nel suo futuro?
Penso che la musica house, la musica elettronica in generale, stia diventando molto più popolare rispetto a prima, ora come proprio tu hai detto tutto è concentrato su festival, arene, ed anche principali radio e TV… non so davvero dove si trovi il futuro di tutto questo, ma posso dire che l’elettronica ha il pubblico più giovane, quello che il rock era negli anni ’80.
Quando componi un nuovo pezzo, dove estrai la tua ispirazione? Che cosa vuoi trasmettere tramite la tua musica?
Traggo ispirazione da tutto, dalle persone con cui sono, dal tempo fuori, ma soprattutto dalla musica che ascolto in giro, specialmente i vecchi dischi disco e funk! Sono pazzo di loro.
Dal 2011 dopo “Kalifornia” hai avuto molto successo, che cosa è cambiato? E che cosa vorresti continuasse ad evolversi?
Penso che un artista sia in continua evoluzione, in continua evoluzione il suo suono, e la sua musica; ho distribuito Kalifornia nel 2011, non perché diventasse il miglior brano in assoluto, ma perché mi piaceva tanto, era più il mio piacere personale e quando ho visto la reazione della gente, mi ha dato più fiducia. Credo che questo abbia cambiato molte cose per me.
Hai avuto un 2011 ricco di nuove esperienze, hai potuto suonare nei più prestigiosi clubs e festival a livello mondiale, come ti sei sentito?
Era il 2012, ma è stato incredibile! La riproduzione di tali luoghi grandi come XS a Las Vegas, Liv a Miami, Green Valley in Brasile, Creamfied nel Regno Unito, sono così fortunato ad essere onesto. Così ora devo lavorare di più.
Tra l’Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland e Sunburn, hai suonato in vari continenti con differenti culture, quali Europa, Asia, America, e città come Singapore e Tokyo, che cosa ti ha colpito di più nel rapporto pubblico-performance? Tra tutti i luoghi dove hai suonato, ne esiste uno di cui hai un ricordo particolare?
Ogni paesi ha la sua atmosfera e un modo speciale per apprezzare la musica. Ho sempre un ricordo dei miei concerti al Green Valley in Brasile! Questo posto è unico nel bel mezzo della giungla, e la folla è pazzesca! Penso di aver avuto i miei momenti più belli lì!
Tutti parlano della tua collaborazione con “Nervo”, è un pezzo splendido, come ti sei trovato a lavorare con loro?
E’ stata una bella collaborazione, ci siamo incontrati 2 anni fa e abbiamo deciso di andare in studio: ci siamo chiusi dentro per 3 giorni e siamo usciti con “Something To Believe”. E’ un bel mix di musica house old style e nuovo sound-club. Questo è quello che volevamo!
Se non fossi diventato un musicista, che cosa ti sarebbe piaciuto diventare? Forse un astronauta?
Assolutamente un astronauta, o un pro-surfer, che è la mia altra passione.

Norman, you have a lot of potential, what typify your groove?
I don’t know I try to make music to dance, I love when its groovy, i like when you have a mix of tribal rhythm with more hard sound from electronic music…the mix between both can create magic sometimes!
Are you a young and respected producer, in this historical moment, where electronic music move from the clubs to the theater, which positions do you think can play and what changes will have in the future?
I think house music, Electronic music in general as become way bigger than before, now as you said its all about festivals, arenas, but also main radios and Tvs…I don’t really know where is the future with all this, but i can tell you that electronic is to the younger crowd, what rock was in the 80’s.
When you compose a new piece, which draw your inspiration? What you want to convey through your music?
I get inspiration from everything…From the people i am with, from the weather outside, but mainly from the music I’m listening around, especially old records from disco and funk! I’m crazy about that.
Since 2011 after “Kalifornia” have been very successful, what has changed? And things you’d like to continue to evolve?
I think an artist is always evolving, always changing his sound, and his music. I released Kalifornia in 2011, not to make the best track ever, but because i loved it so much…Here it was more my self pleasure and when I’ve seen the reaction of the people, it gave me more self confidence, I guess this has changed lot of things for me.
Have you had a 2011 full of new experiences, could you play in the most prestigious clubs and festivals in the world, how did you feel?
It was 2012, but it was amazing! playing such big places like Xs in Las Vegas, Liv in Miami, Green Valley in brazil, Creamfied in UK, I’m so lucky to be honest. So now i have to work harder.
Among Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland and Sunburn, you played in various continents with different cultures, such as Europe, Asia, America, and cities such as Singapore and Tokyo, what impressed you most in the public-performance? Of all the places where you played, they exist one of which you have a special memory?
Each countries have their vibe and a special way to appreciate music. I always have a memory of my gigs at Green Valley in Brazil. This place is unique in middle of the Jungle, and the crowd is crazy! I think I’ve had my best moments there!
Everybody talks about your cooperation with “Nervo”, is a stunning piece, as you tried to work with them?
It was such a nice collaboration…We met together 2 years ago and we have decided to go in studio…We locked down for 3 days and we came with “Something To Believe In”, it a nice mix of old house music and new club sound…This is what we wanted!
If you hadn’t become a musician, what would you have liked to be? Maybe an astronaut?
Totally an astronaut, or a professional surfer…which is my other passion.
