Proviene da una esperienza come promoter di eventi ed in pochi anni è diventata una delle più rispettate ed osservate dj. In questa intervista ci parla del suo amore per l’Italia, delle sue date italiane e del suo nuovo grande progetto #InTheMood. Una nuova era con un piccolo ritorno alle origini.
Parliamo subito di musica ed ovviamente delle tue recenti date in Italia (Catania e Torino). Come è andata? Come ti sei trovata in Italia?
Catania è stata una cosa fuori di testa, mi sono veramente divertita. Era un party sulla spiaggia partito al tramonto ed andato dritto fino alla notte, è stato pura magia. Ogni viaggio in Italia mi ha fatto sempre più innamorare. Ogni volta che ho suonato in Italia ho potuto percepire l’intensità ed il calore degli italiani. Di questo ne sono assolutamente certa essendo anch’io mediterranea.
Hai qualche amico dj italiano? Penso a Marco Carola con cui hai suonato il 18 maggio al Ker di Barcellona.
Marco è il mio amico/dj italiano. Ho suonato con lui al Ker ed è stato grandioso. Quella sera ho suonato dei set differenti dal solito, molto ricchi di vocals e percussioni. Sono attratta dalle drums e quella sera è stata una grande opportunità per combinarle in diverse sfumature di set. Marco è venuto da me con un sorrisone, ha gradito parecchio. Mi sono fermata nel club sino a chiusura, cosa che normalmente non accade dovendo partire il giorno dopo, tuttavia, era la fine del mio tour e me la sono voluta godere.
Qual è il tuo posto preferito dove suonare?
Ibiza, Italia, Montreal, New York e Miami.
Quanto tempo spendi nella ricerca musicale e quali sono le tue fonti (web, negozi di dischi, etichette, ecc.)?
Ricevo tonnellate di promozionali ogni giorno. E’ difficile riuscire ad ascoltarli tutti, ma, cerco sempre di farlo. Ricevo tracce direttamente dai produttori ed ovviamente compro quelle che mi piacciono.
Sei una bellissima donna. Quanto è importante il fashion e l’estetica per il tuo lavoro e ovviamente per una dj donna?
Grazie. La bellezza non può essere il parametro di valutazione. Le persone hanno diversi gusti e visioni diverse. Ogni persona dovrebbe fare un piccolo sforzo per il proprio aspetto ed avere una propria identità. Per me la moda è l’individualità, non è ciò che è “inn” al momento.
Mood, una parola tanti progetti. E’ il nome della tua etichetta, è il tuo radio show (#InTheMood recentemente disponibile in molti paesi europei) e… che altro? Quando sarà disponibile in Italia il tuo radio show?
Ci stiamo lavorando. Ho chiesto in giro per l’Italia, ma, non mi sembra che ci siano tanti slot dedicati alla musica underground, spero che ciò possa cambiare. Tuttavia, lo show è in onda in 15 paesi ed ogni settimana se ne aggiunge uno nuovo. Sta crescendo organicamente e questo è lo scopo al fine di raggiungere la longevità.
“See You Next Tuesday”, questo è il nome della tua ultima produzione nata e fatta con la collaborazione di Carl Cox. Ma, non solo, è il simbolo di una nuova era, dell’inizio di Inthemood, inteso come serie di eventi (WMC, Coachella). Qual è la filosofia dietro “in the mood”? Qual è il tuo obiettivo? Forse stai cercando il perfetto mix tra l’essere dj e le tue radici di promoter?
Sono tornata alle mie radici. Mi ritrovo a programmare i miei eventi, a gestire la promozione, a premere per la commercializzazione, tutto ciò con l’aiuto di persone meravigliose che mi circondano, dai promotori agli agenti ai dirigenti, è uno sforzo congiunto, ovviamente. L’obiettivo è quello di creare una festa incredibile, con dj e produttori incredibili per consentire alle persone che vengono vederci un momento indimenticabile e magico. BPM Messico, New York e Miami sono stati gli eventi #InTheMood per quest’anno. Sto programmando altri party in giro per il mondo, invitando gli amici e gli artisti che amo, così come le nuove leve.
Tu hai sempre sostenuto che Carl Cox è stato molto importante per la tua carriera. E’ stato il tuo scopritore. Bene, cosa devono fare i ragazzi che vogliono iniziare come dj o produttori? In che modo possono avvicinarsi a grandi artisti come te o Carl? E… esiste un limite di età per trasformare la passione in lavoro?
La musica parla per te. Se sarà buona qualcuno ti noterà. Al giorno d’oggi i dj non possono pensare di mettere solo i dischi, devono creare musica in modo da farsi notare maggiormente dal mercato. Saranno notati se saranno abbastanza bravi, se avranno passione per la musica e dedizione per questa forma d’arte.
Tu sei un icona techno. Ovviamente, la musica si muove e cambia con i tempi…così anche la techno. Mi sembra che ci sia un ritorno a sonorità più house. E’ solo una mia impressione?
Sembra che la musica sia diventata come la moda? Ogni stagione cambia le sonorità. Io non mi sento parte di questo sistema. Suono ciò che sento e che mi piace. Non seguo le tendenze perché vanno e vengono velocemente. Suono house e techno e tutto ciò che sta in mezzo. Non sono attratta da ciò che è o non è “trendy”. Mi creo la mia musica ed il mio suono. Preferisco restare individualista, vera e pura nei confronti della mia identità.
Sei un’appassionata di tecnologia. Penso che tu sia stata una delle prime dj ad utilizzare Traktor con 4 decks. Qual è attualmente il tuo set up ideale? Puoi svelarci qualche trucco o segreto del tuo devices set up?
Penso di non poter più suonare con due soli decks. Utilizzare 2 dischi in loop per poi mixare un terzo ed un quarto ha permesso di creare una nuova dimensione di sound ai miei set. In passato ci preoccupavamo di tenere i dischi in battuta, ora ci si preoccupa di controllare i livelli e gli effetti. E’ costantemente un mixaggio di livelli, un po’ come essere in studio, solo che remixi live e crei una nuova dimensione di suono. Per me è molto più creativo che usare due soli dischi, trovo che sia veramente noioso non sfruttare la tecnologia a disposizione e privarsi della possibilità di creare qualcosa di completamente differente. La presentazione di un set deve essere qualcosa di unico e non ridursi alla riproduzione di un disco così com’è. Il mio background è da musicista, sono costantemente impegnata a spingere i limiti della mia ricerca sonora e questo cerco di tradurlo nei miei set. Se tu compri un disco che ho usato in un mio set e lo ascolti nella versione originale, potrai notare che non sarà la medesima cosa. Io voglio che suoni diversamente, effettato e manipolato “on the fly”. Nel mio setup uso 2 controllers, una F1 e 3 CDJs che sfrutto sia per mixare che come controller per creare nuovi effetti, 4 decks e musica incredibile per costruire una storia. Tutti i controller sono mappati per il mio modo di suonare. In particolare uso gli shortcuts per saltare velocemente da una traccia all’altra nonché per la scelta dei loops, inoltre, uso punti cue sulle tracce e una mappatura degli effetti.
Come sarà la tua estate? Suonerai ancora allo Space? Quali sono i tuoi progetti estivi (date e uscite)? Al momento in cui scriviamo la tua ultima uscita è “Bittersweet EP” su Drumcode.
Esatto, il mio EP sta scalando le charts techno, spero che in poco tempo possa raggiungere le posizioni più alte. Sono molto contenta del fatto che la gente apprezzi le mie uscite. Quest’estate suonerò al fianco di Carl Cox allo Space, di Marco Carola al Music On Amnesia e di Jamie Jones al DC10, nonché, farò altre date che al momento voglio tenere segrete ma per le quali sono molto entusiasta. Dopo l’estate partirò per un tour di qualche mese negli USA, in cui parteciperò a diversi festival e club shows, spero poi di avere una pausa. Al momento credo che riuscirò a fermarmi ed a prendermi un po’ di tempo intorno alla metà di gennaio 2015.[/tab]

She came from a great experience as a event promoter and in a few years she become one of the most respected and noticed dj. In this interview she talk about her love for Italy, her italian gigs and her new big project #InTheMood. A new era with a little back to the roots.
Let’s talk immediately about the music and obviously, about your recent dates in Italy (Catania and Turin). How was? How do you feel in Italy?
Catania was off the hook, I really enjoyed playing there. It was on the beach at sunset time going right into the evening and it was pure magic. I’m falling more and more in love with Italy with every trip I make. Every show I play, I just feel the intensity of the crowd and the hotness of the Italians. I can totally can relate to that since I’m also Mediterranean.
Do you have some Italian djs as a friend? Think to Marco Carola, you played last 18 may at Ker BCN.
Marco is my Italian dj friend. I played with him at Ker and it was amazing. I played a different set that night, it was very chunky, with vocals and lots of percussion. I’m a sucker for drums and that night was a great opportunity for me to play something different. Marco came to me with a big smile that night, he loved it. I stayed at the club until the end of the night, where as normally I don’t hang around when I’m traveling the next day. It was the end of my 10 day tour and I deserved to let my hair down.
What’s your favourite place to play?
Ibiza, Italy, Montreal, New York and Miami.
How many time do you spend in the music research and which are your sources (web, record shop, labels, ecc.)?
I get tons of promos sent to me everyday. It’s time consuming to go through everything but we try as much as possible. I get tracks sent to me directly from producers as well and of course I buy the ones I really like.
You are a beautiful woman. How many is important the fashion style and the aesthetics for your job and obviously for a woman dj?
Thank you. Beauty can’t be argued and measured really. People have different tastes and different visions. As a “person” one should make a slight effort to their looks and have their own identity. For me fashion is individuality, not what’s “in” at the moment.
Mood, one word, more projects. Is the name of your label, is your radio show (#InTheMood recently available in more European countries) and what else? When your radio show will be available in Italy?
We’re working on it. I’ve been asking around in Italy and it doesn’t seem you have many slots for underground music, hopefully we can change this soon. The show is already in 15 countries and acquiring new territories every week. It’s growing organically and that’s the aim in order to achieve longevity. On a more personal note, I’m growing with the show artistically and I’m discovering who I am in the process.
“See You Next Tuesday”, this is the name of your latest production, born and made with the collaboration of your friend Carl Cox. But, not only one, is the symbol of a new era, of a #inTheMood beginning, as a event festivals (WMC, Coachella). Which is the philosophy behind “in the mood”? What is your goal? Maybe, you find the perfect mix between your djing and your roots as a promoter?
I’m going back to my roots. I find myself programming my events and running the promotion to press to marketing with the help of amazing people around me, from promoters to agents to managers, it’s a joint effort obviously. And the goal is to create an amazing party, with incredible djs and producers and to let the people who come to see us have a memorable and magical time. InTheMOOD at BPM Mexico, New York and Miami this year were exactly that. I will be throwing more parties worldwide, inviting the friends and the artists I love to come play, as well as new kids on the block too.
You always says that Carl Cox was very important for your career. He was your detector. Well, what must do the guys they want to start a dj or producer? In which way they can approach to a big artist like you or Carl? And is there an age limit for turn a passion in a work?
The music speaks for itself. If it’s good it will get noticed. DJs cannot just play these days, they also have to make music in order to be more visible in the market. They will get noticed if they’re good enough, if they have the passion for the music, and dedication to this art form.
You are a techno icon (for me and so many other people). Obviously, the music move and change thru the times and techno too. It seems to me that there is a back to a more house sonority. Is only a mine impression?
It seems music is becoming like fashion now? Every season we change the sound. I’m not part of this. I play what I feel and what I like. I don’t follow trends because they come and go very quickly. I play house and techno and everything in between. So I’m not really affected by what is “trendy” or not. I make my own music, and design my own sounds. I prefer to stay individual, true and pure to my own identity.
You are a technological addicted. I think that you was one of the first dj that play with Traktor and 4 decks. Which is your actually perfect set up? Can you tell us some tips or secret about your devices set up?
I don’t think I can ever play 2 records at a time anymore. Looping 2 records and bringing in the 3rd while affecting the 4th has allowed me to create a new dimension of sounds in my dj sets. In the past we used to worry about keeping the beats in time, now I worry about keeping the levels and effects in place. It’s constantly mixing down levels when I have so much going on, pretty much like being in a studio, remixing live and creating new level of sounds while DJing live. For me it is much more creative than mixing two records, it can be very boring not being able to take what you have and twist it into something completely different that doesn’t sound like anything else. The point of presenting a set is to be unique and not just play the record as it is. my background is making music initially, I’m constantly looking to push new boundaries in my sound designs, new structures and I translate this in my live sets as well. If you buy the record I play, if it’s listed in my sets and listen to it, it won’t sound the same as you’ve heard it my set and that’s what excites me the most, manipulating sounds on the fly. I have 2 controllers and an F1 controller, 3 CDJs I can use for mixing and controllers as well and using them to create more effects, 4 decks and amazing music to construct a story. I have mapped out my controllers to suit the way I play. I have shortcuts to beat jump the tracks very quickly and to choose my loops, to cue up the records and mappings for my effects as well.
How will be your summer? You will play again at Space Ibiza? Which are you summer projects (gigs and release)? At the moment your latest release is “Bittersweet EP” on Drumcode.
My Drumcode EP is flying in the techno charts as we speak. It’s sitting at No8 and hoping to get to a higher position in the next few days. My collaboration with Carl Cox is still very high after more than a month of being released. I’m quite happy people are enjoying my outputs and there’s more to come. This year I will be playing in Ibiza alongside Carl Cox at Space, Marco Carola at Music On Amnesia and Jamie Jones at DC10 as well as at a secret date which I cannot reveal at the moment but I’m very excited about it. Then I will be over the US every month for festivals and club shows, my summer looks super busy, I wonder when I will have a break. At the moment it looks like mid January 2015 I can take some time off.[/tab]
