Cosa significa techno? Dove sta andando? Chi ne è influenzato e chi no? Sono tutte domande le cui risposte non ci sono, un po’ perchè cambiano di continuo, giorno dopo giorno, un po’ perchè non si può fermare qualcosa che ci coinvolge tutti, chi più chi meno, tutti i giorni; possiamo solo osservarne la storia, i suoi inizi, i suoi seguiti, le sue contaminazioni e evoluzioni sia con l’aiuto della tecnologia che non. Elektro Guzzi è un progetto di un batterista, un bassista e un chitarrista austriaci, i quali con i loro strumenti suonano una techno pulita e minimal, che se la si ascoltasse senza saperne nulla a riguardo sembrerebbe “normale”, nulla di più, nulla di meno. Ma la sua bellezza, se vogliamo così chiamarla, sta proprio nella novità del linguaggio con cui si “parla” techno. Un fruscio è provocato non da un sintetizzatore ma da una chitarra così è per il beat e così per tutti i suoni Elektro Guzzi: un nuovo linguaggio per comunicare techno.
Come è iniziato il progetto Elektro Guzzi?
Quando ci siamo incontrati, circa 10 anni fa, suonavamo prevalentemente musica jazz e rock, un nostro amico in quel periodo iniziò a fare il dj e ci fece conoscere parecchia musica house e techno, così decidemmo di provare a suonare quel tipo di musica con i nostri strumenti. A Vienna andavamo spesso in un locale, il Flex, e eravamo sempre molto affascinati dalla musica techno ma non dal fatto che venisse suonata con i computer.
Perchè la scelta di non usare le macchine seppur il suono che ricercate richiama alle macchine?
Diciamo che è venuta da sé poiché quando abbiamo iniziato questo progetto non avevamo nessuna idea nemmeno di utilizzare per esempio una drum machine, abbiamo iniziato a fare musica techno con i nostri strumenti, con ciò che avevamo (sorride).
Dove provate le vostre tracce e come siete soliti comporre?
Abbiamo sempre provato in diverse sale prova, da quasi un anno abbiamo un piccolo studio a Vienna. Stiamo lavorando in studio (soprattutto per migliorare la qualità del suono) e ci piace avere un nostro spazio creativo dove provare e registrare. Il nostro EP, Allegro è stato il primo ad essere registrato qui.
Vi va di raccontarci qualcosa del vostro studio?
Abbiamo un set-up molto semplice: di solito la prima cosa ad essere sistemata con i microfoni è la batteria. Di seguito chitarra e basso (prelevati tramite dei registratori a “iniezione diretta”, ossia prelevano il segnale così com’è inviandolo direttamente al mixer o registratore), registriamo una traccia più e più volte, per quanto riguarda la batteria registraimo da diversi punti della stanza e non c’è mai molta post produzione.
Quali sono le vostre influenze e a chi vi ispirate?
Per quello che riguarda la echno vogliamo nominare Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Underground Resistance, Cristian Vogel, Basic Channel, ma ce ne sono molti altri…
Nella scena elettronica e techno c’è qualche artista con cui vorreste collaborare o che ammirate per qualche motivo?
Siamo fan di Rocketnumbernine, di cui siamo anche amici e forse ci saranno anche delle collaborazioni tra noi e loro, vedremo.
Molti artisti che facevano elettronica si sono avvicinati agli strumenti musicali, unendo suoni elettronici a sfumature più rock e pop e anche molti artisti pop e post-rock invece si sono avvicinati all’elettronica, cosa ne pensate al riguardo?
Noi personalmente siamo dell’idea che ognuno debba fare la musica che vuole con i mezzi che desidera, siano essi elettrici che “reali” senza porsi dei limiti al riguardo.
I live: mi sembra dalle vostre date che stiate spesso in tour, anzi sembra che non vi siate fermati molto negli ultimi 2 anni… ci raccontate un live che vi è rimasto particolarmente nel cuore?
Suonare live ci piace tantissimo ed è sempre una bella sfida per noi. Stiamo lavorando ad un nuovo set. In questi due anni abbiamo cambiato sempre qualcosa, ma ora vogliamo stravolgere un po’ tutto. Siamo stati in Messico ad ottobre e quei live sono stati molto speciali. Abbiamo avuto 4 live uno più bello dell’altro. Forse quello più particolare è stato a Villahermosa: abbiamo suonato all’interno di un planetario ed il pubblico è rimasto molto affascinato da questo scenario, quasi impazzito. È stato fantastico. Ma comunque sia, è difficile scegliere un concerto al quale ci sentiamo più affezionati nell’ultimo anno, poiché tutti sono stati unici, ognuno per un motivo diverso.

What does techno mean? Where is it going? Who is affected and who is not? These are all questions whose answers are not here because “techno”changes constantly, day after day, and because you can not stop something that affects everyone, more or less, every day. We can observe its history, its beginnings, its sequels, and its evolution in the contaminations. Elektro Guzzi is a project of a drummer, a bassist and a guitarist, all three from Austria. They play with their instruments a minimal and pure techno, that if you listen to it without knowing anything about it, it seems to you like “normal”, nothing more, nothing less. But its beauty lies in the novelty of its own language with which “speaks” techno to us. A noise is caused not by a synthesizer but by a guitar .. so the beat and so are all the sounds. Elektro Guzzi: a new language to comunicate techno.
How is Elektro Guzzi project started and what’s your purpose for it?
When we met, 10 years ago, we were playing mostly rock or jazz music, a good friend of us started djing and introduced us to a lot of different techno and house music and we decided to use our instruments to create this sound live. We also went to a club called Flex in Vienna and were impressed by the impact of techno music in general but disappointed about the techno live acts that used only laptops.
Why the choice not to use the machines even if the sound recalls to them?
When we started with Elektro Guzzi we did not even think about using for example a drummachine. We had 3 instruments, bass, drums & guitar and tried to find a way to play techno with what we had.
Have you a place to compose?
We used to rehearse in different cellars, but since one year we are having a small studio in Vienna. We’re still working on the studio (to improve the sound quality) but are quite happy to have our own working space. Our last EP, Allegro, which came out in October, was our first record, we recorded ourselves there.
You like to tell us something about your studio and the way you prefer to set your sounds up?
We have a very simple recording setup. We fix the microphones for the drums first. Then we check the guitar and bass signals (which we record via DI boxes). Then we adjust the drums, guitar and bass to the track we want to record. E.G. moving drum microphones for more room, more attack, then we record. There is not so much postproduction. Sometimes we reamp guitar or bass and sometimes drums as well.
What are your influences and who inspires you?
In terms of techno artist that inspired us I would mention Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Underground Resistance, Cristian Vogel, Basic Channel and many more…
In the electronic and techno scene is there any artist that you would like to collaborate or someone you admire for some reason?
We are big fans of Rocketnumbernine and we became good friends with them. Maybe we gonna do something together sometime.
Many artists who were approached electronic musical instruments, combining electronic sounds with shades of rock and pop sounds from their former, and also many musicians and post-rock artists approached electronics, what do you think about that?
Everybody should do the kind of music he/she likes. And we think that it is not so important which kind of instruments one uses (electronic or “real” instruments).
The live-set: it seems to me from your tour-date that you are often on the road, it’s amazing that you have not stopped so much in the last 2 years, could you tell us how you live the live-set and if there was a live-set that remained in your heart most from the others?
We love to play live and it’s always a challenge. Our next plan is to work on a new live-set. We’ve been modifying our live-set during the last two years a lot, but want to build a new one and start from the scratch. We’ve been to Mexico in October and this was really special. We had 4 concerts there and the crowd was amazing. The best show there was in Villahermosa. We played inside of an old planetarium and the people went crazy during our show. This was great. But honestly it’s hard to pick a show of the many great ones we had in the last years.
