[tab title=”Italiano”]Il fenomeno Dannic è venuto alla ribalta nella scena musicale elettronica mondiale in modo repentino negli ultimi anni, facendosi notare con una serie mash-up capaci di portare alla luce il suo talento e le sue abilità tecniche, convincendo inizialmente i clubber olandesi di Breda, la sua città d’origine, e riuscendo via via a conquistare un numero sempre più crescente di pubblico, con set coinvolgenti e produzioni di successo. Una vita frenetica quella di Daan Romers, alle prese con la sua ultima release “Light The Sky”, un radio show da condurre e una label nata da poco, alla costante ricerca di talenti emergenti da presentare. Nonostante questo, Dannic sembra restare umile mentre ci racconta qualcosa di sè, e forse è questo uno dei segreti del suo successo: non montarsi troppo la testa, e piuttosto farla perdere totalmente ai suoi fan.
Sei emerso dalla nuova generazione di artisti olandesi che ha invaso la scena recentemente: puoi raccontarci la tua trasformazione in dj e producer e l’impatto che questa transizione ha avuto nella tua vita?
Ero un dj prima di essere un produttore e ho iniziato suonando alle feste nella mia città d’origine Breda, poi ho composto delle tracce tutte mie, dei mash-up e dei mixati. Crescere nei Paesi Bassi mi ha esposto alla musica dance fin da subito, quindi è stata una trasformazione normale per me, non credi? La musica dance ha avuto una grossa influenza su di me, culturalmente e personalmente, ed è pazzesco pensare che ho iniziato suonando per gli amici e adesso viaggio in tutto il mondo portando ovunque le mie sonorità.
Parlando della tua città natale, Breda, la stessa di Hardwell, Tiësto e Fedde Le Grand, com’è la scena musicale? Com’era la competizione nel tuo Paese all’inizio della tua carriera?
La scena musicale è una delle migliori al mondo senza dubbio, il che rende la competizione feroce e schiacciante delle volte. È importante per i giovani dj/producer poter seguire i passi dei loro idoli, può essere solamente una cosa positiva e mantiene viva una parte molto pulsante del nostro Paese.
Come descrivi le tue sonorità e quali ingredienti compongono una hit di successo?
Certamente funky e piene di groove. Penso che per il mio pubblico, anche se ultimamente sto suonando set più veloci e più pesanti, con più mash-up e tracce classiche, il groove debba esserci sempre, per poter mandare fuori di testa la gente sulla dancefloor.
Hai appena rilasciato “Funky Time” in collaborazione con il duo sud-americano HIIO. Com’è nato questo progetto?
In realtà ci siamo conosciuti al Tomorrowland in Brasile l’anno scorso e abbiamo parlato di una collaborazione, mi sono piaciute molto le loro idee e ci siamo rimbalzati alcuni pareri prima di uscircene fuori con “Funky Time”. Ho voluto che fosse la prima release della mia nuova etichetta Fonk Recordings e ha davvero fatto centro!
Con quali artisti vorresti lavorare in futuro?
Mi piace scovare nuovi talenti, che è proprio il motivo per il quale ho creato la Fonk Recordings, e mi è sempre piaciuto lavorare con i vocalist. Il mio ultimo brano, “Light The Sky”, in uscita in questi giorni, si avvale della straordinaria vocalist Aïrto Edmundo da Zwolle, con la quale mi è molto piaciuto lavorare. La traccia ha fatto diventare pazzi i fan fin dal Tomorrowland della scorsa estate e penso si possa rivelare perfetta anche per un sacco di amanti del pop.
Cosa ti ha fatto fondare la tua label Fonk Recordings?
Produttori sconosciuti mi hanno da sempre costantemente inviato tracce incredibili e ho iniziato a rilasciare su Revealed alcuni ep chiamati “Dannic Selection” per i quali mi sono occupato personalmente di trovare tutti gli artisti. Sentivo quindi che fosse arrivato il momento giusto per lanciare una mia etichetta. Guardando avanti al nostro prossimo demo, che lancerò a Miami durante la Music Week, la mia speranza è quella di vedere un sacco di persone come successe l’ultima volta all’ADE ad Amsterdam!
Cosa ti ha ispirato a creare lo show radio “Front of House”? Qual è stato il passo successivo che ti ha portato a dare il via alla trasmissione televisiva “FOHTV”? Ne farai delle altre?
Volevo entrare in contatto con i miei fan e con il pubblico che non aveva mai avuto l’occasione di potermi vedere dal vivo, ai festival o in qualche club, cosa che “Front Of House” mi permette di fare. Abbiamo appena iniziato con i broadcast settimanali, invece che ogni due settimane, in modo che la musica possa arrivare più spesso e velocemente! Per “FOHTV” ho voluto offrire ai fan la possibilità di sbirciare direttamente nella mia vita (la mia famiglia, il mio studio e la vita on the road tutti insieme ), rispondere alle domande dei miei fan e visitare il backstage accompagnati da me e il mio tour manager. Sto concentrando la mia attenzione sulla Fonk Recordings al momento, ma chi lo sa, potrebbero esserci nuovi episodi di “FOHTV” in futuro…
Ti hanno descritto come un dj progressive house per tutti questi anni, possiamo aspettarci da te sperimentazioni di nuovi generi?
Credo che le mie sonorità si siano decisamente spostate in territori più groove e funky piuttosto che rimanere in quelli prettamente house e questo porti la dancefloor a muoversi ad un certo ritmo e beat, capisci? Questo è il suono che i fan devono aspettarsi maggiormente di sentire da me e dalla Fonk Recordings in futuro.
Cosa pensi abbia in serbo il futuro per te?
Non vedo l’ora di avviare la mia etichetta nel 2016, reclutando i talenti più promettenti, e di suonare a festival e show incredibili, questa estate ed oltre!

[tab title=”English”]The Dannic phenomenon came to the forefront of the global electronic music scene quickly in recent years, becoming noted with a mash-up series able to expose his talent and his technical skills, convincing initially Dutch clubbers of Breda, his hometown, and being able gradually to conquer a growing number of public, with addictive sets and successful productions. A busy life to Daan Romers, struggling with his latest release “Light The Sky”, a radio show to lead and a label recently born that always looks for new talents. Despite this, Dannic seems to remain humble as he tells us something of himself, and perhaps this is one of the secrets of his success: do not have a big head, and rather make his fans lose their minds.
You emerged from the new generation of Dutch artists breaking through in recent years: can you tell us your transition to dj and producer and the impact it had on your life?
Thanks! I was a dj before I was a producer and I first started playing at parties in my hometown Breda, then I started creating my own tracks, mash-ups and mixes. Growing up in the Netherlands meant that I was exposed to dance music all the time so it was normal to me, you know? Dance music had a big impact on me culturally and personally growing up and its crazy to think that I started out playing for friends and locals, and now I get to travel the world with my Dannic sound.
Talking about your hometown Breda, the same town of Hardwell, Tiësto and Fedde Le Grand, what is the music scene like? How was the competition in your country at the beginning of you career?
The music scene is one of the best in the world without a doubt, which does make the competition fierce and it can be overwhelming at times. It is an inspiration to many young dj/producers wanting to follow in the footsteps of their idols, which is only a positive thing and keeps such an exciting part of our country alive.
How would you describe your sounds and what ingredients make a hit track?
Definitely funky and full of groove. I think for my audience even if I’m playing harder, faster sets or I’m DJ’ing more mash-ups and classics, the groove must always be there to get people out on the dance floor.
You have just released “Funky Time” in collaboration with the South American duo HIIO. How this project was born?
I actually hung out with the HIIO guys at Tomorrowland Brasil last year and we got talking about a collaboration – I really liked their ideas and we bounced some thoughts between one another before coming up with ‘Funky Time’. I wanted it to be the first release on my new label Fonk Recordings and really bring the party!
Which artists would you like to work with in the future?
I love finding new talents which was the reason I set up Fonk Recordings and I always enjoy working with vocalists. My next track ‘Light The Sky’ coming out this March features an amazing vocalist Aïrto Edmundo from Zwolle, who I really enjoyed working with. The track has been sending the fans crazy ever since Tomorrowland last Summer and I think it will appeal to a lot of pop fans, too.
What made you want to start your label Fonk Recordings?
I was constantly being sent amazing tracks from unknown producers and I’d also A&R’d some “Dannic Selection” Eps on Revealed, where I’d found all the artists myself, so I felt like this was the right time to launch my own label. Looking forward to our next demo drop out in Miami for Music Week, hope to see a lot of people there like our last one at ADE in Amsterdam!
What inspired you to create the radio show “Front of House”? What was the next step that led you to set up the TV show? Will you be doing any more of these?
I wanted to connect with my fans and my audience that couldn’t make it to see me live, in either festivals or club shows, which “Front Of House” really lets me do. We’ve also just started weekly broadcasts instead of every two-weeks so the music is coming thick and fast! For “FOHTV” I wanted to offer fans a chance to look into my life – my family, my studio and life on the road all together – with fan Q&A’s or going backstage with me and my tour manager. I’m focusing my attention on Fonk Recordings mainly at the moment but who knows, I may bring back some more “FOHTV” episodes in the future…
You have been described as a progressive house dj all these years, can we expect you to experiment other new genres?
I think my sound has definitely moved into more groovy and funky territories rather than just ‘house’, that gets the dancefloors moving to a certain rhythm and beat, you know? This is the sound that fans can expect a lot more of from myself and Fonk Recordings in future.
What do you think the future has in store for you?
I’m looking forward to kick-starting my label in 2016, signing more promising talents and playing some amazing festivals and shows, this summer and beyond!
