[tab title=”Italiano”]Voiski parla techno, ma in un modo differente rispetto alla maggior parte delle voci che da quel coro si levano. Difficilmente pensavo di poter accostare parole così antitetiche come techno ed emozione, sentimento. Ma é proprio questo binomio a caratterizzare l’operato dell’artista parigino, è questa organica e dinamica sovrapposizione che rende le sue produzioni e i suoi live set magici. Un artista completo, coinvolto in diversi progetti paralleli (Kartei, Silicate Musique, Tropical Agitation, Polar Inertia ed altri ancora) in grado di mostrare le diverse e molteplici sfaccettature del suo suono. Lasciatevi trasportare, perdetevi, sarà un lungo viaggio di cui non vi pentirete.
Da una prima “iniziazione” al mondo della musica elettronica, realizzatasi sul finire degli anni ’90 grazie ad un cugino italiano, alle prime produzioni datate 2008: potresti dirci quali sono gli artisti o le persone che maggiormente ti hanno influenzato lungo questo percorso ed in generale, quali sono stati gli eventi che hanno portato alla nascita di Voiski?
Credo che la mia attrazione per l’estetica techno sia iniziata quando a 13 anni trovai il K7 “Electroboogie Compilation Volume II” tra le varie cose di mio cugino. Sin da quando vidi questa copertina del cd blu metallico posata sul tavolo ero già visivamente ipnotizzato. Non potevo resistere a metterlo nello stereo e quando ascoltai “Sterilization” dei Dopplereffekt per la prima volta…era fatta. Iniziai a cercare da solo questa musica a Parigi ma non era così facile considerando che ero ancora molto giovane. Mi ci volle un po’ per capire cosa fosse veramente questa musica e dove si stessero nascondendo i miei compagni. Iniziai a frequentare, assiduamente, il Rex Club e a seguire alcuni dei nostri eroi techno come Laurent Garnier o Technasia; ed è lì che acquisii parte della mia educazione musicale. Ma il periodo più prezioso ebbe inizio nel momento in cui iniziai a studiare in una particolare e concettuale scuola d’arte a Cergy, vicino Parigi. E’ lì che scoprii la musica minimale e contemporanea, ed è in questo periodo che incominciai a creare i miei primi esperimenti sonori, a parlare di ciò che stavo facendo ed a comprendere il fascino che avevo per quei suoni ripetitivi.
Ciò che sin da subito mi ha impressionato maggiormente delle tue produzioni e live set, è stata la coesione tra le ritmiche e sonorità più propriamente techno unite a queste melodie che, partendo da piccoli ed ipnotici loop, progrediscono in qualcosa di sempre più alto ed emozionante. Due treni che viaggiano parallelamente ad uguale velocità, lungo lo stesso tragitto. Cosa ci puoi dire riguardo a questo aspetto delle tue produzioni?
A dir la verità mi avvicinai alla techno per errore… come dicevo prima, la musica che cercavo inizialmente era più che altro Detroit electro ma, negli anni ’90 a Parigi, tra la mia lenta connessione ad internet e i pessimi negozi di dischi, mi ritrovai ad essere confuso, cercando disperatamente quello che desideravo all’interno della sezione techno. In questo modo mi imbattei in musica decisamente pesante, provando tuttavia ad ignorare la parte più dura per concentrarmi su quelle piccole melodie ripetitive, difficilmente udibili tra bassi e altri suoni alti. E finii per apprezzarle. In tutto ciò comunque, le parti più emotive create attraverso l’utilizzo di synth erano, la maggior parte delle volte, assenti. Quando iniziai a produrre quindi fu quasi naturale trovare una connessione tra i tipici bassi veloci della techno e i suoni futuristici ed emotivi provenienti dai sintetizzatori. Quindi si, è come se fossero due treni che procedono parallelamente. In alcune occasioni si può anche sentire come in realtà operi separatamente sulla la parte più ritmata e quella melodica ed il collegamento tra le due non sempre è così chiaro. Mi piace questo binomio e tenterò sempre di connettere questi due differenti aspetti in quanto credo necessitiamo di entrambi. E come se una parte fosse rivolta al corpo, e l’altra all’anima.
Che tipo di setup usi in studio e come avviene, quanto tempo prende, il processo di produzione vero e proprio?
Utilizzo perlopiù sintetizzatori analogici, effettiere a pedali e drum machines, normalmente collegate ad un computer per il sequenziamento e la registrazione. Tuttavia ho anche una configurazione più semplice a cui ricorro quando non voglio prendermi troppo sul serio ed ottenere una maggiore spontaneità dalle produzioni. Dipende molto dal mio umore. In genere produco musica ogni qualvolta ho tempo e normalmente provo a concludere subito dopo aver iniziato e prima di annoiarmi. Mi può prendere dalle 3 alle 5 ore o un’intera notte, non ho vere e proprie regole per questo, però non mi piace insistere e lavorare troppo su una mia traccia piuttosto provo sempre a preservare l’energia iniziale.
Quanta importanza hanno i tuoi live set davanti ad un pubblico nell’ottica poi del lavoro in studio e cosa cambia maggiormente tra i due momenti?
Credo che la differenza tra i due momenti risieda per lo più nel fatto che durante un live mi spinga oltre rispetto a quanto faccio in studio. Il pubblico e la potenza del sistema audio mi sospingono e liberano una certa energia che probabilmente non si rivelerebbe stando in studio. La mia mente lavora di più e penso differentemente. Di base comunque ciò che provo durante un’esibizione live lo trasporto poi in studio, dove avviene un lavoro più schematico, logico, dove vi è un maggior bilanciamento nell’organizzazione del materiale.
Se ti chiedessi di citare tra le tue “piccole” (strumenti di produzione), quella da che più ti regala soddisfazioni?
Di certo la mia drum machine Jomox… per i bassi più devastanti esistenti sul pianeta terra.
Ho notato con piacere che alcune delle tracce contenute nei tuoi recenti live sono state stampate da alcune etichette quali L.I.E.S., I/Y, Field Records. Tuttavia data la mole e la qualità di quanto ascoltato, mi chiedevo se nel prossimo futuro potremmo aspettarci anche un album?
Ho una vaga idea per un album ma è ancora molto sfocata, confusa. Per il momento è lì che cresce in una parte della mia testa mentre mi continuo a concentrare sulla produzione di singole tracce. Ma ci sto pensando sempre di più.
Vi sono altri progetti che ti vedono coinvolto in diversi modi ed in cui è possibile cogliere ed apprezzare altre sfumature del tuo suono e, in primis penso a Kartei, collaborazione portata avanti assieme a Dona Renka (anche conosciuta come Crysta Patterson) che, soprattutto dal lato melodico, mi sembra avvicinarsi a ciò che proponi sotto il nome di Voiski. Mi sbaglio o effettivamente vi è una sorta di connessione, interferenza tra le due realtà?
I due progetti sono effettivamente abbastanza simili musicalmente parlando ma all’interno di Kartei vi sono alcune influenze dance e disco più marcate ed è un progetto più orientate verso una dimensione live, da performance. Inoltre vi è un lavoro molto particolare portato avanti da Renka, su ciò che riguarda l’ambientazione e lo show. Sulla scena lei si occupa di suonare synth e cantare e le sonorità sono leggermente più femminili e colorate. Ora come ora abbiamo quasi terminato un album di tracce techno pop e speriamo sia pubblicato a breve.
So che condividi l’appartamento con Svengalisghots, con cui oltretutto porti avanti anche un progetto chiamato “Tropical Agitation”. Sono curioso di sapere come nasce e che “ruoli” ricoprite rispettivamente, ed infine se avete qualche progetto in serbo per il futuro.
La nostra prima collaborazione ebbe inizio su invito di un amico in commune, Pierre Paulin che ci suggerì di lavorare insieme su di un’interpretazione musicale di “Lax Relax” di Dan Graham. Successivamente, un collettivo noise di artisti, Nox Factio, ci invitò ad esibirci live in uno dei loro spettacoli. Ed è stato esattamente in quel momento che nacque Tropical Agitation, progetto che cresce con molta naturalezza considerando che condividiamo lo stesso appartamento in cui oltretutto produciamo anche la nostra musica. Ascoltiamo le nostre rispettive produzioni e ci diamo consigli a vicenda. Tuttavia circa la nostra organizzazione non abbiamo ruoli precisi. E’ un progetto deliberatamente caotico e senza precise barriere.
Data l’ampia sfumatura della musica da te prodotta e la propensione a collaborare, hai mai pensato di far ciò con artisti provenienti da “altri” generi musicali?
Sono davvero aperto a qualsiasi tipo di collaborazione anche se mi trovo maggiormente a mio agio con altri artisti provenienti dalla scena techno e produttori di musica sperimentale. Sono molto curioso e mi piace avventurarmi, alcune persone possono già avermi visto suonare insieme a gruppi metal, industrial o anche punk. E apprezzo davvero questo genere di inviti.
Parigi, da circa tre anni, può essere considerato un ambiente iper stimolante per chi ama e produce techno (ma non solo); oltre all’aumento consistente di party, ottime location, e un vivo interesse da parte della città, vi è una nuova generazione di produttori, collettivi e label capaci, creativi, coraggiosi. In primo luogo vorrei chiederti un tuo parere sulle ragioni che stanno dietro a questo movimento di “rinascita”.
L’interesse generale per questo genere di musica, che è venuto a svilupparsi a Parigi negli ultimi tre anni, è dovuto in gran parte ad alcuni coraggiosi promoters come Sonotown, Concrete e Dement3d. Hanno davvero infranto barriere, in primis cambiando quell tipico atteggiamento mentale parigino nei confronti della “periferia”. Mentre alcuni di loro organizzano eventi in zone industriali distanti, altri sono impegnati a rendere ancora più ricca la scena dei nostril nuovi club cittadini, invitando i migliori artisti stranieri. Il tutto è stato davvero accolto a braccia aperte dale nuove generazioni parigine che hanno seguito questo movimento, e se ne sono interessate.
E in secondo luogo, come vivi questa situazione, quanta importanza ha in termini di influenze vivere circondato da questa realtà? C’è, inoltre, qualche artista in particolare di cui vorresti parlarci?
Trovo questa situazione particolarmente piacevole, mi permette di incontrare tante persone nuove e fare esperienza. E’ un movimento in continua crescita e si sta espandendo dappertutto. Il gruppo di artisti che si è venuto a creare è molto amichevole e gentile. Riceviamo proposte audaci e sfide sempre più sorprendenti. E’ una scena nuova, dinamica e molto, molto interessante. Giusto per citare qualche nome, penso ai miei compagni della Construct-Reform, Dement3d, Antinote, In Paradisium, Rose et Rosée e così via.
Sebbene nato e cresciuto a Parigi, mi sembra di aver capito che hai origini iraniane, pensi che in qualche modo tale cultura possa averti influenzato nel modo di produrre o nel ricercare certe sonorità?
Amo profondamente la musica persiana e la ascolto anche molto frequentemente. Tuttavia non sono mai stato in grado di servirmene. Non so se un giorno lo farò. Forse è possibile rintracciare alcune influenze guardando a quel tocco ipnotico presente nelle mie produzioni ma non uso le stesse ritmiche e comunque vi è una grande differenza.
Passando a cose più attuali, come sta procedendo l’estate? Dove sarai impegnato prossimamente?
Ora come ora sono pronto a rilasciare il mio nuovo EP sulla label newyorkese Sheik’n’Beik. Saranno due tracce stampate su vinile e si intitolerà “Spotlight Diktat EP”, in riferimento a quella sensazione che alcuni dj possono aver provato quando si trovavano in tour. Una sorta di melanconia generata da aerei, hotel disumani, attese di ore in noiosi terminal e viaggi in solitaria. Dopo di ciò continuerò a lavorare su nuove tracce per la prossima esibizione live ed EP che vedranno la luce più avanti quest’anno.
Un’ultima domanda su un altro tuo segno distintivo, mi riferisco al fedelissimo cappellino Pirelli, ci puoi dire cosa rappresenta?
Quel cappello ha molti significati per me. Aldilà di una passione per la velocità e le macchine, è, in primo luogo, un modo per rendere omaggio a due dei più grandi eroi della mia adolescenza: Ayrton Senna e James M. Stinton (aka Drexciya); quest’ultimo era un camionista di Detroit che non avrebbe potuto immaginare di produrre la propria musica senza essere “on the road”. Entrambi sono grandi fonti di ispirazione per me. Vi sono poi, ovviamente, altri motivi per cui lo indosso, ma questa è una cosa che potrete forse scoprire più avanti.[/tab]
[tab title=”English”]Voiski speaks techno, but in an outstanding and different way compared to most of his peers. I never thought I could juxtapose such antithetical words like techno and emotions but that’s what the Parisian artist manages to do. An organic and dynamic overlap that makes his productions and live sets magic. Voiski is a complete artist, involved in various parallel projects (Kartei, Silicate Musique, Tropical Agitation, Polar Inertia and many others) and able to demonstrate the diverse and multiple facets of his sound. Let yourself get carried away, lose yourself, it is a long trip you won’t regret.
You were first initiated to the world of electronic music thanks to an Italian cousin in the late 90’s. You then made your first productions in 2008. Could you tell us who are the artists or persons that had a strong influence during that timeframe and what are the main events that led to the birth of Voiski?
I think my attraction for techno aesthetic started at 13 when i found The K7 Electroboogie Compilation Volume II on my cousins’ stuff. At first, I saw this metallic pantone blue Cd Sleeve on a table and I was already visually hypnotised. I could not resist to push it on the stereo, then i heard Sterilization by Dopplereffekt for the first time and I was done. I started to look for this music by myself here in Paris but it was not easy as I was young. It took me a while to understand what this music was and where my companions were hiding. Then I started going to Rex club a lot, and to follow some of our local techno heroes like Laurent Garnier or Technasia. I did a part of my musical education there. But the most precious part started when went to study in a weird conceptual-oriented Art School of Cergy near Paris. I discovered minimal and contemporary music and did my first sound experimentations. I also started to put words on what I was doing and to understand my fascination for repetition.
What suddenly struck me in your productions and live sets is the cohesion between those deep techno rhythms and sounds and those melodies, starting from short and hypnotic samples and evolving into something always greater and exciting. Just like two trains traveling in parallel at the same speed and along the same route. What can you tell us about this aspect of your productions?
Actually I went to techno by mistake as I told before the music that I was searching at first was Detroit electro but here in the late 90’s in Paris with my slow internet connection and our terrible record stores I got confused and started to search desperately in the techno section So I went through really hard music and tried to ignore the hard part to focus on the tiny repetitive melodies that were barely hearable between the bass and the high noises. I finally got to appreciate it. But the emotional synth parts were really off most of the time, so when i started to produce myself, I naturally came to connect these typical fast techno drum programs with emotional and futuristic synthesizer sounds. And yes, it’s exactly like two trains running in parallel. Sometimes you can feel that I even work the drums and the melody separately and the connection between them is not so clear. But I like this duality and I will always try to connect them because I think we need both. It’s like one part for the body one other for the soul.
What kind of setup do you use in studio? Can you tell us more about your production routine? How do you get started? How long does it take?
I use analog synthesizer, effects pedals and drum machines mostly; generally connected to a computer for sequencing and recording. But I also have some simple jam configuration when I don’t want to be too serious and get more spontaneity on production. It’s up to my mood. I start a doing music whenever I have time. And I usually try to finish it right after I started and before I get bored. It can take me 3 to 5 hours or one night. I have no rules for that, but I don’t like to overwork my tracks, and I always try to preserve its initial energy.
How important is it for you to perform live sets in relation to your work in studio? What are the major differences between the two experiences?
I think I dare to go further in my lives than I would do on a studio. The crowd and the sound system push me and unleash some wild energy that I would hold if I were in a studio. My mind would work more and I would think differently. So basically what I try on my performances I bring it to studio work which is a more schematical, logical and balanced way to organize it. And both works are really important to me.
If you had to pick the most satisfying of your “toys” (production tools), artistic wise, which one would it be?
My Jomox drum machine certainly.. for the most devastating bass drum on planet earth.
I was glad to discover that some of the tracks of your recent live performances were (finally!) released on some labels among which L.I.E.S, I/Y or Field Records. Considering the impressive amount of tracks included in your live sets and their quality, can we expect an album anytime soon?
I have a vague idea of album but it’s still pretty fuzzy. For now, I let that idea grow in a corner of my brain and I try to focus on unique pieces. But I’m thinking about it more and more.
You are also involved in other and different projects that allow us to discover and appreciate new shades of your sound. I’d like to mention “Kartei”, your collaboration with Dona Renka (also known as Crysta Patterson)which, from the melodic point of view, is quite close to your work as Voiski, as I see it. Am I wrong or is there, in fact, a kind of connection or interference between the two projects?
The two projects are quite close musically speaking, but there are stronger disco and dance influences in Kartei. This project is more live and performance oriented. There is a real work on the universe and the show, all this orchestrated by Renka. On stage, she plays synth and sings. The sound is more girly and colorful. We almost finish an album of techno-pop songs by the way. We hope to release it really shortly.
I know you share not only your flat with Svengalisghots but also the project “Tropical agitation”. Could you tell us more about the birth of that project? What role does each of you play? Do you already have some new projects together?
Our first collaboration started out of the invitation of a common friend, Pierre Paulin, who suggested we work altogether on a musical interpretation of “Lax/Relax” by Dan Graham. Later on, a group of noise and artists, Nox Factio, invited us to perform live in one of their exhibition. Tropical Agitation was born at that very moment and grew up very naturally as we share the same flat and we produce our music there as well. We listen to our respective music and give each other advices. But regarding our organization, we don’t have precise roles. It’s a deliberately chaotic and boundless project.
Given the wide range of shades of the music you produce and your willingness to collaborate with other artists, have you ever thought to work with artists from different music background?
I’m really open to any kind of collaboration even if I’m more at ease with people coming from techno or experimental music. I’m really curious and adventurous, some people could see me perform within metal-indus or even punk formations. And I do really appreciate this kind of invitation.
Paris, for around three years, has been a really stimulating environment for producers and fans of techno music. With the significant increase of parties, great locations and a strong public interest, the French capital has been carrying a new generation of producers, collectives and labels, all very skilled, creative and brave. According to you, what are the reasons of this resurgence?
The public interest of this music genre has been developing for the past three years, mostly thanks to some bold promoters like Sonotown, Concrete and Dement3d. They really push boundaries, starting with the most notorious psychological border that is the Parisian ring road “Périphérique”. While some organize events in distant industrial zone, other are busy enriching the scenes of our new clubs with the best foreign artists. This whole dynamic was really welcomed by Parisian youth who has been following the movement and becoming concerned.
How do you personally live that situation? How much, evolving among this pool of artists, has an influence on your work? Is there any producer you’d like to speak about?
I find this situation really enjoyable and it allows me to meet a lot of new people and have a lot of experience. More and more is happening and everywhere. The sphere of artists is really friendly and nice. We receive bold proposals and always surprising challenges. It’s a fresh, dynamic and really stimulating scene. To give you some names, I think about my mated of Construct-Reform, Dement3d, Antinote, In paradisum, Rose et Rosée and so on.
Even if you were born and raised in Paris, I understood you have Iranian roots. Has Iranian culture had an influence on your way to produce or to look for particular sounds?
I’m really fond of Persian music and listen to it quite often. Nevertheless, I have never been able to use it. I don’t know if one day I will. Maybe you can find some influences if you look at the hypnotic touch of my music but I don’t use the same rhythms, and it’s really different.
To talk about your latest news, how is going your summer? What will you be up to next?
Right now I’m getting ready to welcome my new record on a New York label Sheik’n’Beik. A two track vinyl release called the Spotlight Diktat EP in reference to a feeling some DJs might have when they are on tour. A kind of DJ melancholia generated by airplanes, dehumanized hotels, waiting hours in boring terminals, traveling alone. After that, I’ll keep working on new tracks for my next live shows and EPs to come out later this year.
My last question is about one of your distinctive mark. I’m talking about this Pirelli cap you always carry around. Could you tell us what is its signification to you?
This cap has several meanings. Beyond a love for speed and cars, one of them is to pay a tribute to two of my greatest heroes of my young life: Ayrton Senna and James M. Stinson (Aka Drexciya) who actually was a trucker from Detroit, and could not imagine himself doing his music without being on the road. Both are a big source of inspiration for me. There are other reasons why I wear it of course, you may find out later.[/tab]
