Poche domande, risposte concise che aprono una voragine sull’evoluzione della scena house dell’ultimo ventennio: anni vissuti attraverso gli occhi di David Brown, unico membro degli Swayzak, dopo l’uscita di James S. Taylor del 2011 che ha deciso di intraprendere la carriera solista col suo nuovo progetto Lugano Fell. Sono bastate poche parole per percepire l’inquietudine di chi intravede la decadenza del mondo di cui ha sempre fatto parte e che ora pian piano si sta appiattendo: una scena monopolizzata dalla poca creatività di chi la alimenta, di coloro che si accontentano di soddisfare le richieste del pubblico usando fonti comuni e riducendosi a proporre un prodotto sempre molto simile a se stesso. Un punto di vista da tenere in considerazione e che può fungere da spunto, da sprone o solo da base di partenza per un’analisi di coscienza. Ecco a voi, la visione di David.
Gli Swayzak si sono formati nel 1993 e quest’anno è il ventennale. Qual è il segreto dell’essere ancora in gioco dopo tutto questo tempo?
Amicizia e amore per la musica: l’amicizia in primis e la musica subito dopo. Il successo non era il fine ultimo, abbiamo iniziato solo per essere felici! Infatti, credo che poi il successo abbia rovinato l’amicizia, purtroppo!
Perché vi siete sciolti?
Io credo che James abbia voluto fare qualcosa di suo dopo tanti anni insieme. Era giunto il momento… Fra noi non funzionava più, dal 2009 è stato tutto più difficile! Lugano Fell è il suo nuovo progetto, fatto di interessanti ed esoterici ‘paesaggi sonori’ e non di musica da club. Non usa più il computer ma solo campionamenti registrati che riproduce improvvisando totalmente.
Come si è evoluta la scena techno/electro dal tuo debutto ad oggi?
La techno è ancora forte ma sembra più di moda oggi che allora: è cool ora e non era cool nel 1997. Techno è Berlino. La scena electro… penso che sia morta?
Com’è stato il tuo approccio all’evolversi delle tecnologie? Lo accogli di buon grado o ne rimani sempre scettico?
Non mi piacciono troppo i “dj spingi bottone” che scaricano brani gratis e non sanno nulla della storia della musica. Raccogliere dischi è stato il lavoro del dj e non la sola riproduzione dei brani: questo è ciò che lo ha reso speciale perché per esempio esiste il dj che ha il disco “A” e il dj ha il disco “B”. Ora tutti hanno la stessa musica scaricata da Beatport o da una classifica di Steve Bug o qualcosa del genere. Io uso il computer per fare musica e l’ho fatto fin dall’inizio quindi non ho nessun problema con la tecnologia. E’ solo un gioco, il gioco dell’essere famosi.
La vostra biografia ufficiale afferma che i vostri live sono sempre improvvisati. Come spiegheresti a chi non vi ha mai visto l’evolversi di un vostro live? Cosa utilizzate e come avviene il processo creativo? Cosa è cambiato oggi, rispetto agli esordi?
Uso le banche dati dei nostri loop registrati su Ableton: non mixati, non preparati. Inizio e mi faccio prendere dal flusso, le idee rimbalzano fra loro in tempo reale e questo è sempre interessante e stimolante, ma mai noioso! La tecnologia ha reso la produzione più facile e meno costosa, ma le vendite risultano essere anche più difficili. Nessuno vuole acquistare musica, ma tutti vogliono essere dj. E’ inutile essere un dj ora, non c’è nemmeno più bisogno della capacità di mixare.
Come funziona il processo creativo?
Ascoltare – suonare le idee – jam – mixare dal vivo – pensare – premere registra e vedere cosa succede. Questo è quello che abbiamo sempre fatto.
Che consiglio ti senti di dare ai giovani che iniziano la carriera?
Per quanto io la ami, l’house music non è una carriera. Ci sono troppi produttori e dj, ma non ci sono abbastanza frequentatori di club. E’ un lavoro part-time che non paga bene a meno che tu non sia una star. Sta aumentando la difficoltà di essere visti come una stella, a meno che non vi capiti di essere Nina Kraviz o Ricardo. La bellezza al giorno d’oggi aiuta. Il mio consiglio è di suonare vinile, essere diverso, essere originale, non copiare. Le competenze e le capacità di un dj sono di vitale importanza!
Ci sono alcune nuove promesse, come dj e produttori, da tenere d’occhio?
Ce ne sono molti si, continuo ancora a comprare vinili, tutti i tipi di vinili. “Lord of the Isles” mi piace in questo momento. Per quello che riguarda i dj. Non ascolto più nessuno a parte Levon Vincent, Andrew Weatherall e Baby Ford, forse anche qualcuno come Ron Trent o Robert Hood…
Il progetto Swayzak ha prodotto moltissimi album. Possiamo ricordare le uscite su M-nus, !K7 e la realizzazione del Fabric 11. Di cosa vai più fiero della tua carriera?
Credo che l’uscita del primo album sia stato il momento di cui sono più orgoglioso, ma anche essere stato in grado di viaggiare e vedere il mondo partendo da un inizio molto modesto e aver sentito persone dire: “La tua musica mi ha cambiato la vita”. Ho ottenuto questo risultato molte volte e in molti luoghi. Il fatto che fare musica abbia reso felici le persone è una cosa incredibile ed anche essere ricordato per una determinata canzone da così tante persone è grandioso, anche se spesso mi rifiuto di riprodurre i brani preferiti. Questa è la mia storia – è il momento di qualcun altro per giocare.
Uno degli ultimi lavori è stato S_w_z_k uscito per Tresor Records l’anno scorso. Com’è nata questa collaborazione? Parlaci un pò del concept che sta dietro questo progetto.
Volevo ottenere un suono techno più pesante e scuro, musica concreta che ti scuote gli occhi. Conoscevo bene il Tresor Club perché abbiamo suonato molte volte lì. Abbiamo parlato con il ragazzo responsabile di questo, che era un amico ma avevo già l’idea in testa. Il progetto è molto semplice e mi piace molto: probabilmente è il mio preferito dopo “Snowboarding in Argentina”! E’ stato fantastico averlo prodotto e sentirlo alla fine registrato: la prima volta ha soffiato via il soffitto dello studio di registrazione!
Quali sono i progetti futuri?
Sono in arrivo nuovi brani targati Swayzak su etichetta tedesca 3rd Wav. E’ in previsione un’uscita di Swayzak con Richard Davis sull’etichetta inglese Construct. E’ in arrivo anche S_w_z_k su Tresor.

Few questions, concise answers that open a hole on the evolution of the house scene of the last twenty years: years lived through the eyes of David Brown, the only member of Swayzak, after the way out of James S. Taylor in 2011 that he decided to launch a solo career with his new project called Lugano Fell. Few words are enough to feel the anxiety of those who sees the decline of the world that has always been part and now gradually is flattening: a scene monopolized by the little creativity of the ones who feed it, those who are content to meet the requests from the public using common sources and reducing to offer a product that is very similar to himself. A point of view to be taken into account and that may serve as a starting point, as a spur or only for an analysis of consciousness. Here it is, David’s version.
Swayzak was formed in 1993 and this year is the twentieth anniversary. What is the secret of being still in the game after all this time?
Friendship and love of music: friendship was first and music second. The success was not an issue. We start just to be happy! In fact, I think that the success spoiled the friendship… sadly!
Why James left?
I think he wanted to do his own thing after so many years together. It was time… We didn’t really work much together anymore, since 2009 is has been difficult! Lugano Fell is his project, made of interesting esoteric soundscapes and not club music in any way. He doesn’t use a computer anymore but just sampling records and he replaying them totally improvised.
How evolved the techno/electro scene since your debut till today?
Techno is still strong but it seems more fashionable now that before: it’s cool now and it wasn’t cool in 1997. Techno is Berlin now. Electro scene I think is dead?
How is your approach to changing technologies? Do you accept it, do you like it or are you skeptical?
I don’t like too much the ‘push button djs who download tracks for free and know nothing of the history of the music… Collecting records was the job of a dj and not just playing the tracks: that’s what made it special because one dj has the record “A” and one dj has the record “B”. Now everyone has the same music from Beatport or from a Steve Bug chart or something. I use computer to make music and have done since the start so I have no problem with computers. It’s just a game, the fame game.
Your official biography states that your live shows are always improvised. How would you explain, to those who have not seen one, the evolution of your live shows? What do you use? What has changed today, since your start?
I use banks of our own recorded loops on Ableton: not mixed, not rehearsed. I just start and go with the flow, bouncing ideas of each other live was always interesting and challenging but never boring! Technology has made production easier and cheaper but sales are also harder. Nobody wants to buy music but everyone wants to be a dj. It’s pointless being a dj now, you don’t even need a skill to mix anymore.
How does the creative process?
Listen – Play ideas- Jam – Mix live – Think – Press record and see what happens. That’s what we always did.
What advice do you feel to give to the young people that are starting the career?
As much as I love it, house music is not a career. Too many producers and djs but not enough club goers. It’s a part time job that doesn’t pay well unless you are a star. It’s increasingly difficult to be seen as a star, unless you happen to be Nina Kravitz or Ricardo… Beauty helps now. My advice is play vinyl, be different, be original, don’t copy. Good dj skills are vital!
There are some new promise, as djs and producers, to keep an eye on?
There are many yes, I still buy vinyl, all sorts of vinyl. “Lord of the Isles” I like at the moment. For what it concern djs, I don’t really listen to anymore apart from Levon Vincent, Andrew Weatherall and Baby Ford, maybe someone like Ron Trent or Robert Hood too…
As Swayzak you have produced many albums. I may recall the releases on M-nus,! K7 and also Fabric 11. What are you most proud of in your career?
I guess the first album was the proudest moment but also being able to travel and see the world from a very small beginnigs and hearing peolpe say “Your music changed my life”. I get this many times from many places. To make music that made people happy is an amazing thing and to get remembered for one particular song by so many people is great. Though often I refuse to play the favorite tracks. That’s history – for someone else to play.
One of your last works is “s_w_z_k” release on Tresor Records, last year. How did this collaboration come about? Tell us a little bit of the concept behind this project
I wanted to make heavier darker techno sound, music concrete that shook your eyeballs… I knew Tresor Club well, we played there many times. We spoke to the A+R guy who was a friend and that was it. I had the ideas already started. Very straight forward project and one I like very much probably my favourite since “Snowboarding in Argentina”! The production was great to do and to finally hear it mastered, it blew the roof off the mastering studio.
What are you future projects?
New Swayzak tracks are coming soon on 3rd Wave label from Germany. Swayzak with Richard Davis is coming also from UK label Construct. Also S_w_z_k on Tresor is coming soon.
