Brillante! Andre Crom è veramente brillante! Ora devo andarmi ad ascoltare assolutamente qualche sua release. Ecco cosa ho pensato quando l’ho ascoltato per la prima volta. Conosciamolo meglio: già da adolescente incuriosito dalla Techno e l’House, inizia come giornalista intervistando artisti come Masters At Work o Mel Cheren, continuando come booker, ma coltivando sempre il suo ruolo preferito: il Djing. Infatti, una volta trasferitosi a Berlino inizia a lavorare a tempo pieno come label-manager, producer e Dj. Informandomi qua e là ho scoperto che è molto conosciuto nell’ambiente musicale di cui fa parte. Crom ha suonato anche in molti club importanti, come lo Space a Ibiza, il Watergate & Bar 25 a Berlino, il Rashomon a Roma, l’EGG a Londra e in molti altri locali sparsi per il globo; ha rilasciato canzoni per etichette come Freerange, Liebe Detail, Safari Electonique ed altre ancora. Inoltre nel 2008 fondò anche la OFF Recordings, una delle etichette house più popolari in circolazione, con un ottimo feedback. Le release di questa label vengono utilizzate da Dj di fama come Josh Wink, Richie Hawtin e Luciano, giusto per norminarne qualcuno; in aggiunta ci sono altri nomi importanti che pubblicheranno sulla OFF come, per esempio Dj W!LD, Nima Gorji, Mic Newman e Reboot. Com’è nato l’amore per il Djing e la produzione e come sei riuscito ad emergere, ed affermare il tuo nome?
L’amore per il Djing è nato quando sono entrato in un vero club a 18 anni. Era un mondo diverso dall’ambiente noioso e conservatore che avevo conosciuto nella campagna tedesca dove sono cresciuto fino a quel momento. Così ho deciso di dedicarmi a tempo pieno alla musica elettronica, e dopo le prime release sulle label come Lieb Detail, Leftroom o Memo, iniziai con la mia label OFF.
Come ci si sente a passare da giornalista all’intervistato principale? Ti manca un po’ quel ruolo?
Ad essere onesti ci si sente meglio ad essere l’artista!
Quali sono stati gli artisti che ti hanno formato e a cui sei ancora legato?
Troppi per elencarli. Ma “Homework” dei Daft Punk è stato una sorta di “catalizzatore principale” per entrare nella qualità dell’house music. Naturalmente ora hanno preso un’altra direzione e sinceramente non li seguo più.
Nel corso della tua vita sei cresciuto molto e ti sei fatto conoscere per l’artista che sei in varie parti del mondo. Quanto ha influito nella tua vita il fatto di esserti trasferito a Berlino ed esser diventato quello che sei?
La cosa bella di Berlino è che è veramente facile fare la vita come un artista in qualsiasi disciplina. Gli affitti sono bassi, i club sono grandi e si incontrano un sacco di persone che la pensano allo stesso modo. Sono anche contento che la dominanza del “suono Minimal/Tech di Berlino” sta diminuendo sempre più e la gente si stà più aprendo alla Deep House.
Domanda a bruciapelo: Vinili, CD, Traktor o live set?
Per anni ho lavorato con Traktor, ma da Gennaio 2011 sono ritornato coi cd e un paio di vinili. Il mixing è più stretto, posso concentrarmi meglio sulla folla e sono così felice di essermi sbarazzato dei problemi tecnici.
Qual è stato il club che ti ha più emozionato durante i tuoi gigs? Dove torneresti più volentieri?
L’anno scorso il Rashomon è stato veramente sorprendente. A Berlino ho suonato molte volte al Wilde Renate, che amo molto. E proprio una settimana fa ho suonato al “Stompy Vs Sunset party” al Cafè Cocomo a San Francisco. I ragazzi accorrono a questo House party da 20 anni e puoi sentirne la storia, la cultura, il mix di giovani e clubbers veterani che raramente hai da qualche altra parte.
La tua prossima release è OFF 25 “Get Back To The Raw”. Raccontaci un po’ di più a proposito di questa.
Questa release non segna solo il numero 25, ma anche i 2 anni e mezzo di OFF. Così ho voluto presentare la musica dei nostri artisti che da più tempo sono con noi, come Chris Carrier, DJ W!LD, Luca Doobie, Martin e io, ma ho introdotto altri nuovi nomi come David August o Lan Pooley. E’ una grande combinazione di rilassate e profonde melodie. La produzione non sarà pubblicata solo su vinile e digitale, ma anche su 2 Cd mixati da me e da Chris Carrier; il tutto verrà lanciato dal 16 Giugno 2011!
Potresti darci una preview del tuo futuro? Inoltre ultimamente, insieme a Martin Dawson avete pubblicato parecchi pezzi molto validi a mio avviso. Non è che per caso avete in mente di tirar su un progetto tutto vostro?
Dopo questa intervista andrò fuori a farmi una vacanza di 3 giorni, a vedere una gara motociclistica; non vedo l’ora! Prevedo un’estate molto occupata con un sacco di bei concerti all’aperto, party su barche, una serata a Ibizia dedicata alla OFF Rec. e molto tempo per rilassarsi sotto al sole.
Inoltre uscirà prossimamente un prossimo EP mio e di Martin. Poi sto anche lavorando ad un album da solista, ma ci vorrano ancora un po’ di settimane.

Brilliant! Andre Crom is truly brilliant! Now I must hear some of his release. That’s what I’ve think when I heard him for the first time. How did the love for Djing and production born and how you managed to emerge, to affirm your name?
My love for DJing was born when I first entered a real club at 18 years old. It was a different world to the boring and conservative environment I knew from growing up in the german countryside until then. So I decided to get fulltime into electronic music, and after the first releases on labels like Liebe Detail, Leftroom or Memo to start my own label OFF.
How does it feel to switch to journalist to the main interviewed? You miss a bit that role?
To be honest it feels much better to be the artist yourself!
What were the artists that have formed you and you are still tied?
Too many to mention. But Daft Punk’s “Homework” was sort of a main catalyst to get into quality house music. Of course now they took another direction and I don’t really follow them anymore.
During your life you developed and you be known for the artist that you are in various parts of the world. How much has influenced your transfer in Berlin and becoming who you are?
The great thing about Berlin is that it’s really easy to make a living as an artist in whatever discipline here. Rents are low, the clubs are great and you meet loads of likeminded people. I’m also happy that the dominance of the “Berlin Minimal/Tech sound” is getting weaker and more and more people are opening up for deephouse.
Point-blank question: Vinyls, Cds, Traktor or live set?
For years i worked with Traktor, but since january 2011 I went back to Cds and a couple of vinyls. The mixing just feels tighter, I can focus better on the crowd and am so happy to have got rid of the technical hassle.
What whas the club that excited you more during your gigs? Where you go back kindly?
Last year Rashomon was really great. In Berlin I have played many times at Wilde Renate, which I love as well. And just a week ago I played at the “Stompy vs Sunset party” at Cafe Cocomo in San Francisco. The guys there have been running this house party for nearly 20 years and you could really feel the history, culture and great mix of young & veteran clubbers which you rarely have elsewhere.
Your upcoming release is OFF 25 “Get Back to The Raw”. Tell us some more about that!
This release marks not only number 25 but also 2,5 years of OFF. So I wanted to present music from some of our longterm artists like Chris Carrier, DJ W!LD, Luca Doobie, Martin and me, but also introduce some new names like David August or Lan Pooley. It’s a great combination of laidback deep tunes, some more banging trax for the peaktime and some wasted afterhour music. It’ll be released not only on vinyl and digital, but also on 2 mixed Cds by Chris Carrier and myself, all to be released around 16.6.11!
Could you give us a preview of your future? Also recently, with Martin Dawson you published several pieces very valids in my opinion. Don’t you wanna project something on your own?
After this interview I’m off to a 3 weeks motorcycle holiday – can’t wait =) And the summer sees a very busy tour schedule with lots of nice open air gigs, boat parties, an OFF labelnight on Ibiza, and more time to relax in the sun. Besides that the next ep of Martin and me will be out soon. I’m also working on a solo release, but that will take a few more weeks.
