Se ci si ferma un attimo a pensare alle carriere dei musicisti che hanno contribuito a creare le fondamenta dei diversi generi musicali, ci si rende conto che, poi, questi stessi sono rimasti pressochè insuperati nel loro stile di competenza. Victor Parris Mitchell è senza dubbio una delle figure chiave nella storia della label Dance Mania, che a sua volta ha segnato la prima scena house di Chicago, quella definita dai più, ghetto house, quasi a conferirgli un marchio di qualità. Genere recentemente riportato, nelle sue derivazioni, all’attenzione del pubblico da una compilation di tracce Juke per ballare il Footwork, selezionata da Mike Paradinas per la sua Planet Mu. Parris da buon musicista e da sempre curioso sperimentatore, ne ha vissuto la nascita e tutte, o quasi, le successive sfaccettature, dall’hip house fino all’acid. Scopriamo, oggi, a più di 25 anni dalle prime release come dj, cos’ha da raccontarci Parris Mitchell. Ancora sulla scena.
Hai contribuito alla nascita di un genere, l’house music, che atmosfera si respirava nei club di Chicago in quegli anni? Vi rendevate conto di quello che stava avvenendo?
La scena club durante il periodo di Ron Hardy è stata molto breve per me. Però sono stato spinto a frequentare diversi club come the Muzic Box, Power Plant e qualche altro club di tanto in tanto, dall’inizio fino alla prima metà degli anni ottanta. Inizialmente non sono stato del tutto influenzato dall’elettronica. Suonavo dal vivo come chitarrista, scrivendo, componendo, registrando R&B e disco music durante gli ‘80, fino all’87. Ho iniziato a frequentare la scuola di musica a 12 anni, durante il picco dell’era disco. Intorno al 1986 ho abbracciato lo stile “4/4 quarter note kick drum beats” dell’elettronica, che rievocava il sound disco che, fondamentalmente, mi ha influenzato. L’atmosfera e l’energia immagino fossero come durante la corsa all’oro in California nel 1800. Penso che quelli coinvolti attraverso le creazioni personali ed il proprio contribuito al genere house, hanno sentito che era qualcosa di speciale, ma hanno pienamente realizzato che sarebbe diventato popolare solo 30 anni dopo, com’è adesso l’EDM (electronic dance music) e tutti i generi derivati: techno, trance, drum’n’bass, dubstep, etc…
Hai iniziato a studiare musica praticamente ancora bambino, ti sei interfacciato con moltissimi strumenti musicali oltre a synth, drum machine e piatti, è evidente che la musica ti scorre nelle vene; c’è stato un momento in cui hai pensato di fare altro?
Non suono solo la drum machine, anzi, una volta suonavo anche la batteria. Per aver superato gli esami della terza media ricevetti dei soldi coi quali comprai un set di batteria da 5 pezzi della Tama, color argento, da un vecchio musicista del mio quartiere. Ma facevo troppo rumore per i miei genitori, così mio padre mi suggerì di continuare con la chitarra, diceva sempre che avevo le dita da chitarrista. Ma finchè non imparai a suonare come Wes Montgomery non sentivo di suonare realmente. Dopodichè mia nonna, che era una tastierista gospel, mi consigliò di imparare a suonare il pianoforte prima della chitarra, così mi ritrovai ad apprendere a suonare diversi strumenti. Poi durante gli ‘80, i synth ed il MIDI andarono per la maggiore, così tutti iniziammo a utilizzarli. Comunque si, non solo ci ho pensato, ma ho realmente fatto anche altro mentre facevo musica, qualcosa a livello amministrativo ed altro di totalmente slegato dall’industria musicale. Credo sia sano fare anche altre cose, voglio dire, come avere altre idee imprenditoriali o cose simili. Ma siccome la musica è una passione mi porta più vicino a sentirmi completo, meno se non sono ispirato.
Qual’è il tuo approccio alla composizione, da cosa sei ispirato?
Dipende realmente da quello che mi sovviene al momento, a volte potrebbe essere un suono particolare, forse anche una progressione di accordi che ho in testa. Ci sono volte quando suono la chitarra, che suono un ritmo che non dovrebbe essere una parte per la chitarra, e lo sostituisco con un synth o un altro suono. I ritmi di Jimi Hendrix sono come quelli tribali dei nativi d’America, per tutta la mia vita ne sono stato attratto, e poi il groove di James Brown, non le canzoni in sè, ma i ritmi.
Ed in che sequenza costruisci le componenti?
Adesso sto per rivelare dei segreti. Allora, questa cosa l’ho capita durante dei vecchi programmi televisivi come American Bandstand e Soul Train che facevano qui negli Stati Uniti. Ogni volta che chiedevano al pubblico quale fosse la parte preferita di una loro canzone, questi rispondevano tutte le volte “il beat”. Non so se questo era preparato o no, ma sicuramente per me fu un indizio abbastanza grande per comprendere quanto importante sia un beat ritmicamente coinvolgente. Così, se si tratta di musica dance, il beat è sempre la priorità e non solo la batteria, ma anche l’intera struttura ritmica della traccia. Quindi prima il ritmo, dopo il tempo di quel ritmo, poi la progressione delle note, la composizione, i suoni ed infine l’arrangiamento della traccia.
Quale è il tuo set up quando produci?
Quando produco, il mio set up varia, dipende dallo stile e dal genere sul quale sto lavorando. Possiedo ancora il mio MPC 3000 LE e qualche altra ottima macchina analogica dei primi tempi. Quindi potremmo dire che è analogico combinato col digitale. Comunque preferisco Ableton rispetto a molti altri programmi per editare e produrre, anche se Pro Tools è il migliore per registrare, a mio avviso.
E quando suoni live?
Mentre suonando dal vivo usavo qualunque cosa a disposizione. Ma è sui Technics 1200 che ho imparato, quindi sono un appassionato della vecchia scuola. Poi ho iniziato ad includere anche la tecnologia, i CD decks vanno bene, ma usandoli ho sempre sentito meno controllo. Traktor ha fatto un ottimo nuovo mixer chiamato Z2 che inizierò ad usare nei miei live. L’intero pacchetto mi darà modo di improvvisare ed essere più creativo.
Possiamo considerare Life In The Underground come una delle tue composizioni acid house. Perchè non ti sei addentrato molto in questa derivazione dell’house, nonostante nella seconda metà degli ‘80 vi furono progetti notevoli come ad esempio quello del collettivo Phuture, capitanato da Dj Pierre?
Allora, durante la nascita della acid house, negli anni ‘80, lanciata da DJ Pierre, Adonis e qualche altro, io stavo lavorando a delle tracce ma non pubblicai nulla con loro, anche se certamente mi influenzarono. Infatti comprai la mia prima TB 303, per 75 dollari, nel 1987. Avevo notato che era uno strumento e non un drum box, e feci una canzone per la label Dance Mania di Ray Barney, chiamata Love Will Find A Way, con lo pseudonimo di Victor Romeo, usando appunto i suoni acidi della 303.
Quando hai suonato l’ultima volta dal vivo?
Suono frequentemente in party privati a Chicago. Però diventa sempre una situazione scomoda quando hai a che fare con locali dove tutti vogliono suonare. Non è il mio tipo di scena, anche se di sicuro porta al successo, diventa un pò strano per me. Ho il privilegio di un posto veramente esclusivo qui in città, intendo veramente esclusivo, solo su invito. Visto che ho sempre avuto un seguito più grande in Europa, continuerò a mostrare il mio apprezzamento e a condividere con piacere la mia creatività con quelli che apprezzano il mio talento, la mia arte. Quindi, sono super contento ogni volta che c’è l’opportunità di suonare o fare un PA in Europa.
Oggi ai tuoi live, da parte del pubblico, percepisci la stessa energia che sentivi agli esordi da dj o è cambiato qualcosa? Se si cosa?
Se metti i dischi giusti, nella giusta sequenza, ti arriverà la giusta energia da qualsiasi pubblico, lo stesso suonando dal vivo. Un mio collaboratore che non conosceva la mia storia e non si era reso conto che suonassi mi ha chiesto: “sei un dj o suoni?”. Io gli ho risposto che suonavo e, curioso, gli ho chiesto il motivo di tale domanda, ed ha replicato dicendo che, per lui, suonare e mettere dischi sono due cose totalmente diverse, allora gli ho spiegato che in realtà sono due cose molto simili. Conoscere le giuste note di uno strumento come si dovrebbero conoscere i dischi giusti. In fondo è una questione di gusto, come per uno strumento… si è lo stesso. Ma ho anche ascoltato molti dj passare set lounge in un’atmosfera da club, ecco questo mi ha sempre confuso… Se il pubblico vuole ballare non puoi fare un set con tutte tracce uguali, voglio dire, se è del livello di Fingers, Larry Heard, Robert Owens o Black Coffee, fantastico, perchè è ben fatto. Ma ora un certo pubblico sembra non gradire la musica lounge nei club o qualcosa del genere. Non dico che vogliano tutti ascoltare qualcosa di energetico per ballare il juke, ma almeno dei dischi che spingano abbastanza da tenerli svegli. Il che mi porta ad uno dei motivi per i quali non frequento molto i club da queste parti.
Secondo te quali sono oggi i dj/producer che più possono essere considerati “figli diretti” della Chicago house?
Penso ad artisti come David Guetta che ha ampiamente riconosciuto l’influenza di Farley Keith, o i Daft Punk che hanno citato artisti come Jeff Mills aka The Wizard, Derrick May, DJ Pierre, Waxmaster, DJ Funk, Jammin’ Gerald, Dj Deoon, DJ Slugo, io stesso, Parris Mitchell, ed altri ancora, per averli influenzati. Va preso comunque atto del fatto che, al momento, diversi artisti pop come Far East Movement, Rihanna e tanti altri stanno utilizzando registrazioni house “EDM”.
Ci sono artisti coi quali ti piacerebbe collaborare? Chi sono e perchè.
Mi piacerebbe moltissimo collaborare con i Daft Punk e Pedro Winter, perchè apprezzano la vera energia e l’integrità di quello che creammo all’epoca. Inoltre i Daft Punk hanno rispettosamente reso omaggio a tanti di noi con la traccia “Teachers”. Dunque, essendo io stesso un musicista come loro, sarebbe una collaborazione incredibile, soprattuto perchè ho calcato per tanto tempo la stessa sporca scena di Chicago.
Non è mai piacevole per un musicista scegliere quale sia il proprio lavoro migliore, posso chiederti però: quale è quello che ha più valore, diciamo in un certo senso, sentimentale? Per quale motivo?
Love Will Find A Way avrà sempre un posto speciale nel mio cuore. Durante la mia vita ci sono stati molti cambiamenti, a seconda delle circostanze, e la sola cosa che potevo pensare era che l’amore avrebbe trovato la strada per mettere le cose a posto. Infatti eccomi qui. I miei pensieri erano: “dove c’è una speranza c’è un cammino” che può trasformare qualcosa di negativo in qualcosa di positivo. Bisogna solo credere in noi stessi e nel potere dell’amore. L’amore per tutto quello che il tuo cuore ha sempre desiderato.
Quali sono gli album che consiglieresti a chiunque di ascoltare?
Io consiglio Homework dei Daft Punk e qualsiasi buona pubblicazione (non elettronica) della Early Disco Records, i fondatori di fatto dell’house/dance e della club music. Ascoltare anche generi diversi dalla musica dance per ispirarsi, perchè se hai solo questa dimensione è come se vivessi in una scatola, dopo un pò, ogni cosa che crei ti suonerà uguale, se tutto quello che fai è collegato alla house music. Fermo restando che tutte le ispirazioni dovrebbero venire da dentro, bisogna fare attenzione a quello che si assorbe.
Hai da poco ripubblicato All Night Long su Wicked Bass, quale sarà la prossima?
E’ prevista una nuova uscita su Deep Moves Records a Berlino, DEMO006, chiamata Juke Joints Vol.2. Ho anche ristampato recentemente Life In The Underground, doppio 12”, su Ghetto House Classic Records. Ho un nuovo giovane prediletto, il suo nome è Omar Contri aka Shinoby, con il quale sto lavorando, stiamo pianificando qualche data per quest’anno e sto anche parlando con molti altri grandi produttori dance per eventuali collaborazioni. Le mie ultime parole sono per tutti i dj e produttori: fallo, non hai bisogno di svenderti, o di fare di te stesso la storia di un video, sii te stesso. Il motto è: “qualunque cosa fatta al buio verrà alla luce” e “la crema lievita sempre”.

If one stops a minute to think about the careers of musicians that have contributed to creating the foundations of different musical genres, one realizes they have remained unsurpassed in their style of competence. Victor Parris Mitchell is undoubtedly one of the key figures in the history of label Dance Mania, which marked the first Chicago House, defined by most people as Ghetto House, almost as if conferring it with a mark of excellence. This genre has recently, via its derivates, been brought back to the public’s attention thanks to a compilation of Juke tracks for dancing Footwork, selected by Mike Paradinas for his Planet Mu. Parris, an excellent musician and a curious experimenter, lived its birth and all, or almost, its faceting, from Hip House to Acid. Today we will find out, 25 years from his first releases as a Dj, what Parris Mitchell has to tell us. Still on the scene.
You contributed to the birth of a genre, house music, in those years what was the atmosphere like in the clubs of Chicago? Had you realized what was to come?
The club scene during the Ron Hardy days was very brief for me. But, I was coerced into frequenting the various clubs like, the Muzic Box, Power Plant, and a few other clubs every so often during the early to mid 80’s. I wasn’t completely influenced by the electronic dance music style in the beginning. I was playing live as a guitarist writing, composing, and recording R&B, and Disco style records at the time during 1980, through 1987. I started attending music school at 12 years of age, during the height of the disco era. I embraced the “electronic dance music style 4/4 quarter note kick drum beats around 1986, which were reminiscent of the Disco sound. That Disco style, and sound ultimately is what influenced me. But, the atmosphere, and energy was like that of what I imagine that the California gold rush must have been like during the 1800’s. I think everyone involved through their own personal creations, and contribution to the House genre, felt as though it was something special, how special, no one really probably felt as though some odd 30 years later, that it would be Pop Music. Like now it’s EDM, and all sorts of derivative genres. Techno, Trance, Drum’N’Bass, Dubstep, etc, etc…
It’s obvious that music runs through your veins, you started at such a young age bouncing from one musical instrument to another such as synth, drum machine, discs and many more; but has there ever been a moment in your life where you thought of doing something other than music?
I don’t just play “drum machine”; I actually played drums at one time. For my 8th grade graduation, I received money. I took the money and purchased a 5 piece silver Tama drum kit from an older musician in the neighborhood. The drumming was too loud for my parents, and my Dad suggested that I stick to Guitar, and he would always tell me that I have Guitarist fingers. But, until I can play like Wes Montgomery, I wasn’t playing for real yet. After which my grandmother was a gospel keyboardist, and suggested that I learn to play Piano, before Guitar. So, I eventually learned how to play a few instruments. Then during the 80’s, the synth, and MIDI became the big deal, so, we all embraced that. Yes, I did more than think about doing something other than music, I actually did other things while doing music, non related to the music industry, some in administrative aspects of entertainment, and something’s totally not related to music. I think it’s healthy to do other things also. I mean, like other business ventures and stuff. But, because music is a passion, it draws me closer to the point whereas I feel complete, not whole if I am not being musically creative.
What is your approach to composing, what inspires you?
It really depends on what comes to my mind at the time. Sometimes it could be a particular sound. Maybe even a chord progression in my head. There have been times when I am playing Guitar, and I may play a rhythm, that shouldn’t be a guitar part, and substitute it for a synth, or another sound. Jimi Hendrix rhythms are like Indian tribe (Native American) rhythms. For my whole life, I have been attracted to that, and those James Brown rhythm grooves. Not the songs themselves, but the rhythms.
In what sequence do you construct the components?
Now I’m giving away secrets. Ok, well, for me I understand the old American Bandstand, and Soul Train television shows that played here in the States. Every time the asked someone in the audience what did they like most about a song/record, they would always 100% of the times say, “the beat”. Not sure if that was scripted or not, but, it was a big enough clue for me to understand how important a rhythmically infectious beat is. So, if it’s dance music, the beat is always the priority, and not only drums, but also I mean the entire rhythm of the track. So it’s the rhythm, and then tempo of that rhythm, then progression of the notes, composition, sounds, and then arrangement of the track.
When producing, what’s your set up?
When I am producing, my set up varies, depending on what style, and or genre I am doing. I still have my MPC 3000 LE, and some other great analogue gear from the early days. So, it could be analog, combined with digital. I really prefer Ableton, to a lot of other programs for editing, and producing. But, Pro Tools is the best for digital recording in my book.
And when you play live?
Playing live, I was like, whatever you got type. But, I learned on Technics 1200’s, so I’m old fashioned. Not until recently have I really started incorporating technology also. CD decks are ok, but I always felt less control using them. Traktor makes a great new mixer called Z2. So, I will be including that from now on. The entire pack, because I can do things on the fly, to be more creative.
We can consider Life In The Underground as one of your acid house compositions. Why didn’t you go deeper into this area of house, given that in the late 80’s there were also many noticeable projects such as the Phuture collective, lead by Dj Pierre?
Well, during the 1980’s birth of Acid House, spear headed by DJ Pierre, Adonis, and a few others, I was actually making the tracks but did not release any of them, of course being influenced by Pierre, and Adonis. I actually owned a TB 303. . I bought my first one for $75.00 USD in 1987. I saw that it was actually an instrument, and not a drum box, and I did a song on Ray Barney’s label Dance Mania called Love Will Find A Way, under the name Victor Romeo, using the 303 Acid sound.
When was the last time you played live?
I frequently do private party events in Chicago. As it becomes a bit of a crabs in the barrel type of thing when dealing with spots others are all clambering to play in? That’s not my ideal of a scene, conducive to becoming successful; it gets kind of weird, to me. I have a lead on a really exclusive spot here in town. I mean it’s completely exclusive, invite only. Because my biggest support and admiration has always came from Europe, I will continue to show my appreciations, and gladly continue to share my creativity with those who appreciate my talent, and art. So, I’m super excited any time there is opportunity to play, or do a PA in Europe.
Now when you play, from the public do you feel the same energy as you did at the beginning? Has anything changed, if so, what?
If you play the right records in the proper sequence you will get the right energy from any audience, like live performing. An associate of mine who didn’t realize my record history, and didn’t realize that I play, ask me, “are you a DJ, or do you play?” I said I play, then asked him “Why?” curious to ask him why did he posed that question, and he replied and said, “to him, playing and DJing are 2 totally different things, then went on to explain that playing records to him, is similar to playing an instrument. Knowing the right notes on an instrument, as one should know the correct records. Although it’s a matter of taste, same as an instrument…. Yes, it’s the same. But, I have heard a lot of DJ’s playing lounge sets, for a club atmosphere. Like, this has always confused me. I think if people want to dance, don’t play a set with all legato style tracks. I mean, if it’s like Fingers, Larry Heard, Robert Owens, or Black Coffee, cool, because it’s done correctly. But, some crowds seem to be immune to lounge music in clubs now, or something. Not to say all people will be into high energy like Juke, but at least records with enough pizzazz to keep me awake. Which brings me to one of the reasons why I don’t do a lot of clubbing here.
In your opinion which djs/producers of today could be considered “direct descendents” of the Chicago house music?
I think artist like David Guetta, who credited Farley Keith with influencing him. daft punk who credited people like Jeff Mills aka The Wizard, Derrick May, DJ Pierre, Waxmaster, DJ Funk, Jammin’Gerald, Dj Deoon, DJ Slugo, myself Parris Mitchell and others for influencing them. But there are acts like Far East Movement, Rihanna, and so many Pop artist completely doing House “EDM” records now.
Are there any artists that you would like to collaborate with? Who, and why?
I would love to collaborate with daft punk, and Pedro Winter, because they embraced the raw energy and appreciated the integrity of what we were creating at that time. Plus daft punk also paid a lot of us very respectable homage in their track called “Teachers”. So, with me being a musician like they are, that would be an incredible collaboration. Especially since I do have that edge of grit from the Chicago scene.
It’s never an easy task for an artist to choose which is his best work, could I ask you though: which has most “sentimental value” to you? For what reason?
The record called Love Will Find A Way will always have a special place in my heart. I had a lot of life changing circumstances going on during that time of my life. The only thing I could think was that love will find a way to make things alright. Thus the hook came from. My thoughts were, “where there is a will, there is a way”, to turn something negative into something positive. One just has to believe in themselves, and the power of love. The love of what ever your heart desires.
What albums would you recommend people to listen to?
I recommend Daft Punk’s “Homework”, any good Early Disco records, (non electronic), since that is the actual foundation of House/ Dance, and or club music. Listen to genre’s non-related to dance music for inspiration also. It’s like living in a box if you only have that one dimension. After a while, everything will sound the same that you create, if all you are concerned about is House music. Although all inspirations should come from within, just be careful to what you take in.
You’ve recently re-released All Night Long on Wicked Bass, what’s next? Keep it real!
I have a new release on Deep Moves Records in Berlin, DEMO006, called Juke Joints Vol.2. I also re issued Life In The Underground double 12” on Ghetto House Classic Records recently. I have a new young protégé named Omar Contri aka Shinoby, which I am working with. Planning some touring this year. I’ve been talking with several other great dance producers about collaborations also. My final words, to all the DJ’s and Producers is, do you, no need to clique up, make you tube history videos, just do you. The saying is “whatever is done in the dark, will come to light”, and “cream always rise to the top”.
