[tab title=”Italiano”]La prolificità nella musica non è sempre sinonimo di qualità, ne tanto meno di originalità. A meno che non si abbia un piano ben preciso. Jesse Rose ne ha escogitato uno. L’idea è semplice: rilasciare a cadenza mensile, con uscita ogni dodicesimo giorno del mese, un singolo in 12” per poi raccogliere l’intera serie in un unico album. Il titolo: “12×12” naturalmente. In occasione dell’arrivo sul mercato dell’album che raccoglie tutti i singoli usciti durante il corso del 2013, abbiamo intervistato Jesse per farci raccontare i retroscena di questo interessante esperimento e per farci dare altre anticipazioni piuttosto intriganti.
Per il tuo progetto “12×12” hai avuto un idea piuttosto originale. Ci si potrebbe pure immaginare una specie di mistero di tipo cabalistico nascosto dietro. Com’è che ti è venuta?
Nel 2012 stavo componendo musica e decisi che avrei voluto realizzare un album di soli “lati A”, così, invece di realizzare un LP come si usa normalmente fare, ho pensato di pubblicare un singolo ogni mese per un anno intero. In quel modo avrei avuto la sicurezza che ogni singolo sarebbe stato all’altezza ed allo stesso tempo avrei avuto il tempo di rieditarlo e ritoccarlo in un secondo tempo per renderlo compatibile con il formato album. Inoltre mi piaceva l’idea di poter ricevere feedback e responsi dai fans e dai dj man mano che i singoli uscivano sul mercato. Io stesso mi accorgo di non notare alcuni brani inclusi negli album che ascolto, per cui utilizzando questo metodo produttivo, avrei reso il materiale piú digeribile per i fans.
Dal punto di vista tecnico come ai lavorato ai singoli 12” e poi, conseguentemente all’intero album “The Whole Twelve Inches”?
Onestamente, quando entro in studio comincio semplicemente a comporre. La maggior parte delle volte mi piace improvvisare ma visto che con la serie “12×12” si trattava di realizzare dei singoli sapevo già dall’inizio che per la maggior parte sarebbero stati destinati ai clubs. Mi piace comporre tracce “deep” altre volte il feeling è più orientato verso la techno. Dipende da che parte mi alzo dal letto la mattina! Mi considero estremamente fortunato visto che ho la libertà di produrre e suonare ciò che più mi piace.
Sei il tipo di produttore che lavora meglio sotto pressione e con delle precise date di scadenza?
Si, devo avere una deadline o altrimenti comincio a lavorare ad un’altra cosa. Non passa giorno che non abbia una lista piena di cose da fare. Ma sinceramente sono contento così. Mi sento bene quando alla fine della giornata mi guardo indietro ed ho una lista di impegni già assolti ed una serie di cose alle quali posso cominciare ad occuparmi. Forse la pressione sotto la quale la serie “12×12” ed il seguente album mi hanno sottoposto è stata un po’ troppa perché ho avuto poco tempo mentre la qualità doveva essere la più alta possibile. Ma d’altra parte non ha senso far uscire dischi che non hanno nulla da dire visto che di questi tempi ne escono un milione di altri ogni giorno.
Dei brano prodotti per il progetto, quale è il tuo preferito ed invece quello che ha avuto più successo, dal punto di vista delle vendite e da quello dei riscontri?
“Time Is But A Moment” avrà sempre un significato particolare per me perché è il primo per il quale ho scritto il testo e lo sento come qualcosa di più che una semplice traccia da club. Onestamente ogni singolo pubblicato ha ricevuto ottimi riscontri da i dj più disparati… da Loco Dice per cominciare a Derrick Carter a Pete Tong. Per quel che riguarda le vendite, “Not Hit Enough” la collaborazione con Playmode, è andata particolarmente bene ed è stata presente nei Top10 della sezione tech-house di Beatport per quasi tre mesi. “Love The Feeling High”, la prima uscita, ha ricevuto anche un sacco d’attenzione. Su Radio 1 credo che “Shuffle The Paper” sia stata la più suonata. È bello perché si tratta di un album che nonostante il formato ha ricevuto tanti riscontri positivi per molti dei suoi singoli brani.
Ho notato che un buon numero di tracce incluse nell’album sembrano influenzate dalle classiche tecniche di produzione basate sui samples e dalla filter house. Un suono che mi fa pensare all’hip hop della vecchia scuola ed alla french house. Cosa ne pensi?
Beh direi che se guardi alla mia discografia questo é un suono che ho portato avanti da un certo tempo. È la musica con la quale sono cresciuto e sarà sempre un ispirazione per me. Non ci penso coscientemente anche se, guardandomi indietro, noto che ho sempre gravitato intorno a quel tipo di suono in una parte o l´altra di ogni mia produzione.
Ci potresti raccontare qualcosa a proposito degli artisti che hanno collaborato al progetto? Oliver $, Playmode, Chuck Inglish, Brillstein and Arama?
Quando non ero in tour stavo in studio, per cui se qualcuno voleva venire a trovarmi doveva venire per foza in studio. Oliver $ è stata una collaborazione ovvia, abbiamo lavorato assieme per così tanto tempo, mi ha seguito in tutte le mie label, l’ho supportato per circa sette anni. È anche il tedesco più divertente che io conosca. Brillstein invece è uno degli americani più divertenti che io conosca. Così il tutto si è rivelato una collaborazione tra comici. Brillstein vive a L.A. ed ha un mucchio di bei samples per questo è sempre divertente lavorare con lui. Playmode ed io abbiamo vissuto assieme per un periodo ed amo le sue produzioni, in più è un gran tecnico del suono. Con Chuck stavamo producendo un altro pezzo ed alla fine di quella session sono riuscito a farlo partecipare al brano presente nell’album, penso che il risultato sia anche migliore di quello ottenuto per il brano a cui stavamo lavorando durante quella giornata. Assieme ad Arama ho lavorato a molti progetti ed è sempre all’altezza, ma in verità tutte queste collaborazioni sono avvenute perché non ho mai lasciato lo studio, niente è stato pianificato.
Sei anche molto preso nella produzione di remixes, passando da un successo all’altro. I tuoi remix di “Sun Is Shining” di Bob Marley e “Desert Night” di Rufus ne sono la prova. Qual è il tuo approccio alla produzione di un remix?
Il mio approccio ai remix è lo stesso che ho nei confronti di una mia composizione originale. Entro in studio e comincio a giocare con le singole parti finché non sono soddisfatto del groove che ho prodotto e da quello mi lascio ispirare. Credo che questo sia il motivo per cui alcuni dei miei brani hanno un carattere piú “deep” mentre altri sono piú adatti per il peaktime. La cosa è dovuta all’umore della giornata o all’influenze del momento. Come ho già detto, so di avere la fortuna di poter produrre la musica che sento piuttosto che dover produrre ogni volta la stessa cosa.
Un’altra domanda a proposito. Qual è secondo te il segreto di un buon remix e quali sono i tuoi remixers o remix preferiti?
Dipende, è fantastico quando a volte un remix cambia completamente l’originale, come il remix di Luciano di Tim Wright, ma mi piace anche quando, come nel caso del remix di Oliver $ di “Shake That”, si resta vicini all’originale magari rendendo più potenti le percussioni. La chiave di tutto è non avere regole!
Cosa bolle in pentola per i prossimi mesi per quel che riguarda la tua label Play It Down?
Dunque il mio album é appena uscito sul mercato, sarà poi la volta dell’album di remixes “The Whole Twelve Remixes”, poi da Los Angeles esordirà Brillsteincon il suo album in Aprile ed abbiamo una compilation di pezzi esclusivi da tutti gli artisti della label a Maggio. Siamo molto indaffarati perche rilasciamo singoli ogni mese, in arrivo ci sono Ninetoes, Lewis Boardman, Christian Nielsen, O&A, Oliver $. Pazzesco, ma siamo così fortunati ad avere dei grandi artisti che producono musica che amo.
Quali sono i tuoi piani per il 2014?
Come ti dicevo in uscita il 12 Marzo c’è l’album di remixes “The Whole Twelve Remixes”. Ci sono alcuni dei miei artisti preferiti come Mathias Kaden, Guti, Ninetoes, Sebo K, and Matthias Tanzmann e produttori in ascesa Ardalan, Christian Nielsen e Victor Marso che remixano ogni uno una traccia contenuta nel mio nuovo album. Lo scorso mese ho ricominciato a lavorare seriamente in studio con una vera e propria leggenda: Leon Ware. Stiamo lavorando ad alcuni pezzi di funk e soul moderno. È incredibile poter lavorare con qualcuno come Leon. Questo materiale uscirà verso la fine dell’anno. Per quel che riguarda i remixes ne ho appena finito uno per Ninetoes e ne sto per iniziare un altro per Sweat It Out, l’ultimo che avevo prodotto per loro era quello di “Rufus”, che è andato molto bene nel Regno Unito.
Ancora una domanda per finire. Che ci dici della tua collaborazione con Henrik Schwarz al progetto Black Rose? Verrà riattivato nei prossimi mesi?
Si, abbiamo lavorato a molti brani ed un nuovo singolo uscirà tra breve. Il problema è che lavoriamo assieme solo ed esclusivamente in studio e non via internet il che significa che o io vado a Berlino o lui deve venire a Los Angeles. Ma è sempre un piacere lavorare con Henrik e quando abbiamo la possibilità di suonare assieme – solo in eventi speciali come festivals etc, si sprigiona un energia unica. I love it![/tab]

The idea is simple: release a 12” the 12th of every month for a year and then collect the whole series in an album. The title: “12×12”, of course. In occasion of the release of the aforementioned Lp we took the chance to interview Jesse and let us tell something about the making of this interesting experiment and to try and find out more about his future projects:
You came up with an original concept for your last project “12×12”. One would be pushed to think that there’s some kabbalistic mistery hidden behind it. How did you get to that idea?
At first I was just writing music in 2012 then I decided I wanted an album of A-sides, so I thought instead of just releasing an album like normal, I’d release a single every month for a year; that way I knew each single would have to be as super hot as I could make it and it would give me time to later re-edit and tweak all the tracks for a full-album purposes. I also really liked the idea of being able to get feedback and responses for each track from fans and djs as they came out. I find myself missing tracks on album, so by spreading things out this way, I just to try and make it more digestible for the proper fans.
Technically how did you get ready and work at the single 12”s and then, at the whole forthcoming album, “The Whole Twelve Inches”?
To be honest, when I go into my studio I just start writing. A lot of the time I just like to jam but seeing as the “12×12” series were all single releases I knew for the most part they’d all have a club vibe. I like writing deeper stuff, other times I get into more of a techno vibe. Just depends on what side of the bed I wake up on! I consider myself extremely lucky that I’ve got the freedom to be able to make and play what I’m into.
Are you the kind of producer that works better under pressure and tight deadlines?
Yeah I have to have a deadline or I just start working on something else. There is never ever a day I wake up and there isn’t a full list of things to do. But honestly I think I like it this way, it feels good at the end of the day to look back and see all the things on the list crossed off and a brand new amount of things to start working on. The pressure of the “12×12” series and this album maybe was slightly too much because I had little time and the quality had to be as high as possible. There´s no point in releasing records that are saying nothing, at a time a million records are released everyday.
Out of the tracks released which is your favorite and the most successful one, in terms of sells and feedbacks?
For me “Time Is But A Moment” will always mean a lot because it was the first record I wrote the lyrics in and really feels to me like something a little more than a club banger. To be honest every release got great feedback from lots of different dj’s from Loco Dice on one to Derrick Carter to Pete Tong. Saleswise the “Not Hit Enough”, the collab with Playmode, sold really great and was Top10 in Beatports Tech-House section for nearly three months. “Love The Feeling High”, the first release, also got a lot of attention. For Radio 1 i guess “Shuffle The Paper” was the most played. It feels good because it’s an album and there is so much love for many different tracks.
I noticed that a good amount of tracks included in the album seem influenced by classic sample-based production techniques and filter house. Stuff that reminds me of old school hip hop and some french house of the late 90s for example. What do you think about it?
Well I guess if you look at my discography this is a sound I have carried with me for some time. That’s the music I grew up listening to and will always be an influence on me. I don’t really think about it but if I look back I see that i always gravitate to this kind of sound somewhere on every release.
Can you tell us something about the artists that collaborate at the project? Oliver $, Playmode, Chuck Inglish, Brillstein and Arama?
I was only in the studio when I was not on tour so if you wanted to hang, you’d have to come to the studio. Oliver $ was an obvious collaboration, we’ve been working together for so long. I brought him up through my different labels, I’ve been supporting him for like seven years. He’s also the funniest german I know. Brillstein is one of the funniest Americans I know, so I guess this whole thing was just collaboration of comedy. Brillstein lives in LA and has loads of great samples so it’s just really good fun to work with him. Then Playmode was living with me for awhile & I love his productions, he’s a great engineer. Chuck was doing another track and I got him to do this at the end of a session, I think the result was better than the other track we made that day. Arama I’ve been working with a lot on many projects and she always delivers but really all these collabs happened because I never left the studio, nothing was planned.
You are always quite busy remixing other artists going from strenght to strenght. Your last hits, Bob Marley’s “Sun Is Shining” and Rufus “Desert Night” are the proof. How do you approach a remix?
I approach remixes in the same way I approach sitting down and writing a track. I go into the studio and start playing with the parts and jam until I’m happy with the groove and then just roll with it. I guess that´s why some of my stuff feels really deep and other more primetime, it’s just based on the mood of the day or the influence I feel from what i’m working with. Again, I feel so lucky to be able to make the music I feel rather than feeling I have to do something in the same style every time.
One more question about it. What’s in your opinion the secret of a really good remix and, which are your fav remixers and/or remixes?
I think it really depends, sometimes when a mix completely changes the original, like Luciano’s remix of Tim Wright, it’s amazing and other times when Oliver $ did his remix of “Shake That”, it stays close to original but beefs the drums, it’s also great. Having no rules is the key!
What’s in the pipeline for the next months for your own label Play It Down?
Well, my album has just been released, then the remix album ‘The Whole Twelve Remixes’, then a new artist from L.A. Brillstein has his album coming in April and we have a compilation of all exclusive tracks from all the artists in May. It’s a busy time because we also release singles every month, coming up we have Ninetoes, Lewis Boardman, Christian Nielsen, O&A, Oliver $. It’s crazy and we are blessed with great artists who produce music I love.
What’s your own plans for 2014?
Well next up is the remix album “The Whole Twelve Remixes”. I got some of my favourite artists, from people like Mathias Kaden, Guti, Ninetoes, Sebo K, and Matthias Tanzmann to upcoming producers such as Ardalan, Christian Nielsen, and Victor Marso to remix each of the tracks from the album. That’s out March 12th. Then there’s more stuff on Play It Down from our exclusive artists Dansson, Christian Nielsen, Oliver $, O&A a bunch more… a mini album too from Brillstein who’s got two collaborations with me on my album, and a huge compilation in May of all exclusive singles from our whole roster. Last month I just started to get serious studio time and worked with a proper legend: Leon Ware. We’re working on some modern day funk/soul cuts. It’s been amazing to work with someone like Leon. That stuff will be released later in the year. Remix wise i just finished one for Ninetoes and I´m doing another one for Sweat It Out, the last one I did for them was the “Rufus” remix, which did really well in the U.K.
One last question. What about your collaboration with Henrik Schwarz on the Black Rose project? Shall it be reactivated in the next months?
Yeah we’ve been working on many tracks and a new single is due soon. The problem is we only work together in the studio, not over the internet so it means either i have to go to Berlin or he has to come to L.A. to make it happen. It’s always a joy to work with Henrik and when we play it out -only at special events like festivals etc, it has an energy that only happens when we play together. I love it![/tab]
