Ciao Dominik, sei solito prepararti meticolosamente alla serata o vivi il party in modo spensierato?
Per me ogni set è una miscela di: preparazione settimanale, preparazione specifica per il club e spontaneità del live. E‘ importante per me includere gli impulsi che ho al momento mantenendo comunque il leitmotif della serata. Per me il messaggio musicale definito è importante tanto quanto l’assimilazione delle sensazioni e dell’energia della serata e della reazione che si ha. Questo aiuta ad ottenere il massimo da questa situazione.
Ti informi mai su dove suonerai, sul tipo di pubblico e di cosa tira in quel determinato club?
Direi di no. Se suoni 2-3 volte a settimana hai tutto ciò che ti serve con te. Di solito arrivo un’ora prima del mio set, cerco di assorbire il mood e so molto bene dove voglio portare il pubblico. Facendo questo è importante per me dare una connotazione molto individuale alla musica e non avere atteggiamenti da Dj prostituta.
Ti soffermi mai sul dj che apre la serata o preferisci entrare ed imporre il tuo sound?
Cerca un modo per creare e trasferire in termini di stile, ma non per ultimo non m’interessa molto cosa suona il dj prima di me, in quanto ho una visione molto chiara di come modellare i miei set.
Ti capita mai di pensare “voglio assolutamente suonare questo disco stasera”?
Si…certo. E‘ questo il bello del nostro lavoro. Mi capita spesso durante la settimana di ricevere nuovi promo o album che sono devastanti e non vedo l’ora di suonarli a tutto volume nell’atmosfera euforica di un club. Questo è sempre un enorme piacere ed anche una delle ragioni per cui questo lavoro è sempre divertente e sempre lo sarà.
Quando suoni dal vivo hai paura di sbagliare o sei sempre sicuro della tua performance?
Non sono mai preoccupato. Cosa potrebbe succedere?
Mi piace cercare di portare la gente in un viaggio eccitante, un viaggio che conosco molto bene…e non mi ci perdo mai. Errori… cosa sono gli errori? Gli errori sono una preziosa qualità umana. Preferisco mille volte di più eseguire una tecnica manualmente anche quando il beat non è al 100% in sincro. Questo crea tensione, intimità ed eccitazione nervosa. Per me è molto più interessante ascoltare un dj che scazza una transizione piuttosto che ascoltare un mix pre-arrangiato e syncato che mi fa addormentare.
Come ti comporti con i promoter e il pubblico, preferisci interagire con tutti o vuoi il tuo spazio?
Per me fa parte del lavoro interagire anche con i promoters prima e dopo il mio set.
Serve a creare una sensazione di mutualità e fa bene all’atmosfera. Inoltre il contatto diretto con la gente è importante. Questa è la ragione per cui non mi piace suonare con il laptop. Non voglio avere uno schermo scintillante che attira la maggior parte delle attenzioni tra me e il pubblico. E‘ di un’importanza immensa per l’atmosfera della serata, che l’energia possa confluire da uno all’altro senza interruzioni. L’intenzione è quella di fare festa e divertirsi e dimienticare il solito grigio tran tran. E questo succede solo se anche il dj fa festa e si diverte.

Hello Dominik, usually you prepare meticulously the evening party or use live carefree?
For me each set is a blend of: a weekly preparation, a club specific preparation and spontaneous live sensation. It is important for me to include current impulses in my set by still keeping the leitmotif throughout the the night. For me the defined music message is as important as the assimilation of the feeling and energy of the night and to actually react to it. It helps to gain the maximum out of this situation.
Do you need information about the place you will play, the type of audience and what pulls in that particular club?
Not really. If you play 2-3 times a week you are equipped with everything you need. I usually arrive one hour before my dj set, absorb the mood and usually know very good on which journey I want to take the audience. Doing that, it is important for me to give a very individual musical statement and not conducting any kind of dj prostitution.
Do you ever dwell on the DJ who opened the evening or would you rather go in and impose your sound?
I try in a way to create and transfer in terms of style, but last but not least I do not care very much about what the dj plays before me, since I always have a clear vision of how I shape my sets.
Do you ever think “I definitely want to play this music tonight”?
Yes…sure. This is the nice thing about the job. I often receive during the week new promos or records which are devastating and I cannot wait to play them in a club at full volume in an euphoric club atmosphere. This is always a great pleasure and one of the reasons why this job is always creates new fun again and again.
When you play are you afraid of making a mistake or you’re always sure of your performance?
Well, I am never afraid. What could happen? I always enjoy taking the people on a exciting journey, a journey I know very well… I never get lost. Mistakes… what are mistakes? Mistakes are a valuable human quality. I prefer it thousand times to execute a handcrafted skill even when the beat is not 100% synchronized at times. This creates tension, closeness and tense excitement. For me it is much more interesting to listen to a dj who has fucked up a transition than listening to a prearranged and synced mix, this puts me to sleep.
What do you do with the promoters and the public, you prefer to interact with all or you just want your space?
For me this is part of the job to interact also with the promoters before and after my gig. This creates a feeling of mutuality and is beneficial to the atmosphere. Also the direct contact to the audience is important to me. This is a reason why I don’t like to play with the laptop. I do not want to have a glimmering screen in between me and the audience that gets most of the attention. It is of immense importance for the atmosphere of the night, that the energy can flow from one to the other without interruption. The intention is to party and to have a good time and to forget about the grey daily grind. This only works if the dj himself is partying and is having fun and is not.
