Terreno di gioco per moltissime star internazionali e con un filo diretto a Berlino, insieme al Weather Festival, il party e la location a Port de la Rapée detta legge su usi e costumi di una nuova onda techno. A supporto di Concrete, la nuova arrivata Concrete Music rappresenta l’ideale punto di contatto con il mondo, diventando la vetrina perfetta per i nuovi talenti. Brice Coudert, attuale direttore artistico e tra i fondatori del progetto ha le idee chiare in merito all’etichetta, progettando un futuro al centro della scena per Parigi e per i nuovi artisti francesi di domani.
Cosa facevi prima di Concrete e Concrete Music?
Stavo nascosto nell’ombra in attesa del momento giusto per conquistare il mondo della techno. Scherzo… Mi occupavo di progettazione aziendale nell’ambito informatico, ma ero già un grande appassionato di musica e party: compravo un sacco di dischi e viaggiavo ovunque per sperimentare i migliori dancefloor.
Qual è l’idea principale dietro Concrete e cosa vi ha spinto a creare Concrete Music?
L’idea principale dietro Concrete è promuovere buona musica senza rimanere rinchiusi in un solo genere, mantenendo un focus particolare verso gli artisti francesi per aiutarli a crescere in patria e all’estero. La label è stata creata per lo stesso motivo. Ho sempre sognato di fondare un’etichetta e qualcuno dei miei soci lo aveva già fatto, così abbiamo deciso molto alla svelta. Sicuramente non è per far soldi!
Come ti senti quando Concrete viene indicato come uno degli eventi che hanno contribuito alla rinascita del clubbing di Parigi e come si inserisce Concrete Music in tutto questo?
Sicuramente mi sento molto orgoglioso, anche se sappiamo di essere solo nel mezzo di un grande movimento che ha fatto esplodere la scena 5 anni fa. Abbiamo lavorato e lottato duramente perché all’epoca i party techno non erano molto tollerati e le autorità erano spaventate. Piano piano siamo riusciti a farli accettare sia alle persone che alle istituzioni, virando verso una direzione musicale sempre più underground.
A settembre 2015 avete diviso la Concreto Music in 3 parti, ognuna con un tema ben distinto, ci racconti qualcosa in più e ci spieghi il perché?
Anche se non amo dividere per generi musicali, per i DJ era difficile capire la musica che facevamo perché proponevamo di tutto. Magari qualcuno a cui era piaciuta una release house rimaneva poi scontento da quelle più dark e techno. Per questo motivo abbiamo deciso di dividere la label in 3: “Concrete music [7am]” per chi ama le atmosfere deep, minimal e da after hours, “Concrete music [3pm]” per chi ama il funky e “Concrete music [4am]” per chi preferisce la techno. E inoltre grazie a questo, posso pubblicare il triplo di dischi.
Concrete ha sempre avuto una connessione con Berlino e il Berghain. Basandoti sulla tua esperienza personale, in che modo e quanto la scena tedesca ha influenzato quella francese? Possiamo ancora parlare di una scena francese quando si parla di house e techno?
La scena tedesca non ha avuto un influenza particolare su quella francese, ce l’ha sulla techno in generale, come hanno fatto quella di Detroit e quella UK prima. Penso che il Berghain abbia contribuito moltissimo a rendere la techno di nuovo popolare e la città è tuttora la mecca per la nostra musica. Berlino ci ispira moltissimo, ma ora dobbiamo trovare la nostra strada, anche se adesso è un po’ difficile perché grazie a internet, la musica e i gusti sono molto più globalizzati. Chissà, nei prossimi anni potrebbe arrivare un modo nuovo di fare musica proprio dalla Francia. Possiamo sognare un nuovo genere techno creato da Antigone, Zadig, voiski o Francois X. Oppure un nuovo modo di fare musica house sviluppato da Cabanne, Lazare Hoche or Lowris. Chi lo sa?
Il logo a forma di diamante è l’elemento più riconoscibile del vostro progetto, come lo avete scelto e qual è il significato del nome “Concrete”?
Inizialmente organizzavamo un evento che si chiamava Twisted. Si chiamava così perché l’atmosfera era molto edonistica e decadente. Poi abbiamo deciso di fare qualcosa di più serio, professionale e stabile. Concrete, inteso come il suo significato, il materiale calcestruzzo ci sembrava una metafora perfetta e abbiamo deciso di utilizzarlo. All’epoca non sapevo dell’esistenza dell’italiana Concrete Records e pensavamo fosse originale…lol! Per il logo, volevamo qualcosa che fosse bello da vedere ma anche solido. Un diamante era perfetto e quindi siamo andati in quella direzione. Ad ogni modo, voglio congratularmi con Sandra Dubosq che ha creato tutto il design, spesso imitato ma mai eguagliato.
Come mai avete deciso di pubblicare solo vinile e qual è la tua opinione in merito al fermento dietro alla rinascita del disco? Chi è un cliente tipico di Concrete Music?
All’inizio ho preferito pubblicare solo vinile perché non mi piace l’idea che qualcuno potesse comprare le tracce di un EP separatamente. Per me un EP è un oggetto completo e a se stante con musica, grafica ecc. Pensare che ci sia qualcuno che compra solo la traccia più bella mi infastidisce. Dopo un bel po’ di discussioni ho capito che con il vinile puoi raggiungere solo i DJ o al massimo chi ha un giradischi e non mi piace nemmeno quest’ idea. La musica dovrebbe essere condivisibile con tutti, così alla fine sto seriamente pensando di fare anche qualcosa in digitale nei prossimi mesi. Ma continueremo a difendere il vinile perché è la base della musica house e della DJ culture.
Come responsabile artistico, cosa cerchi in un produttore o una traccia per la label?
Concrete Music non è la mia label personale ma bensì quella del club. Per questo motivo non pubblico solo la musica che mi piace ma anche quella che riflette i nostri gusti e i nostri valori. Non cerchiamo le hit e nemmeno di finire in testa alle classifiche. Pubblichiamo la musica che puoi sentire ogni volta che vieni nel nostro club e più di ogni altra cosa, musica fatta con anima e passione. Per le prossime release mi voglio focalizzare più sugli artisti francesi. Posso ancora lavorare con artisti stranieri ma voglio che ci sia sempre un francese nel disco. Voglio che Concrete Music diventi una sorta di piattaforma per la scena francese e aiuti gli artisti ad avere visibilità.
Per un produttore qual è il modo migliore per mettersi in contatto con Concrete Music? Accettate demo o preferite lavorare coi suggerimenti di amici o artisti che già conoscete?
Le persone che vogliono trovare il mio contatto per mandarmi dei demo suppongo lo possano trovare. Però preferisco avvisarli che non mi occupo solo della label, sto curando anche tutto il booking per Concrete e Weather festival, l’anno scorso ho fatto tra i 1200 e 1500 artisti quindi qualche volta posso essere un po’ lento nel rispondere. Ma la buona musica alla fine mi trova sempre.[/tab]
[tab title=”English”]Concrete is the club/event that more than any other represented the rebirth of the Parisian electronic movement in the last five years. Playground for many international stars and with a direct link to Berlin, along with the Weather Festival, the party and the location in Port de la Rapée rule the roots of a new techno wave. In support of Concrete, the newcomer Concrete Music is the ideal connection with the world, becoming the perfect showcase for new talents. Brice Coudert, current AD and one of the founders of the project has clear ideas about the label, planning a future where Paris is at the center of the scene alongside the new French artists of tomorrow.
What were you doing before Concrete and Concrete Music?
I was actually hidden in the dark, waiting for the right moment to take over the techno world. I’m joking… I was actually business engineer in IT, but already a big fan of music and parties: already buying a lot of records and traveling everywhere to practice the best dancefloor.
What is the main idea behind Concrete and what led you to create also Concrete Music?
The main idea behind Concrete is to promote good music without being closed in one specific genre and with a big focus on French artists, to help their development in France and abroad. The label concrete music has been created exactly for the same reasons. I always dreamt to create a label, and some of my associates already did, so we very quick to decide to do it. But it was not to make money for sure!
How do you feel when Concrete is referred as one of the events that contributed to the rebirth of clubbing in Paris and how does Concrete Music fits into this?
Surely I feel very proud of this, even if I know we were just in the middle of a big everything that made the French scene explode 5 years ago. We worked and fought hard to build it. Situation was a bit tough at that time, as techno parties were not really well accepted and even feared by the authorities, but we managed to make people and institutions accept it more and more, with a musical direction more and more underground.
In September 2015 you’ve split the label in 3 parts, each of them with a different mood, could you tell us a little bit more about them and why did you make this move?
Even if I don’t like to differentiate labels on music genres, it was obvious that it was a bit difficult for DJs to understand the music we were doing, as we were really offering all kind of genres. And someone enjoying one of our house releases, could be easily disappointed by the next very dark and techno one, that’s why we decided to split the label in 3 parts: “Concrete music [7am]” for people enjoying deep, after hours and minimal atmosphere, “Concrete music [3pm]” for funky people, and “Concrete music [4am]” for the techno heads. And also, thanks to this, now I’m able to release 3 times more records.
Concrete has always had a connection with Berlin and Berghain. Based on you experience, how and how much the German scene has influenced the French one? Can we still talk about a French scene when talking about house/techno?
German scene doesn’t especially have an influence on the French one but on the techno in general, like the Detroit and the UK scenes did before. I really think that Berghain helped a lot to make techno popular again, and the whole city is still the world mecca for our music. Berlin gives us a lot of inspiration, but now we need to find our own way. That is a bit difficult as, thanks to internet, music and tastes are really more globalized. But maybe, in the next years, a special way to make music will come for France. We can dream about a new kind of techno created by Antigone, Zadig, voiski or Francois X. Or a new way to do house music developed by Cabanne, Lazare Hoche or Lowris. Who knows?
Your diamond logo is the most recognizable thing in your company, how did you decided to go for it and what is the meaning behind the name “Concrete”?
We initially organized a party named Twisted. It was called like this as the atmosphere was really hedonistic and decadent. After that we decided to create something more serious, professional and stable. Since the material Concrete was a good metaphor for this, we used that name. At that time I didn’t know about the Italian label Concrete records, so we thought it was a really original name… lol! For the logo, we wanted something nice to watch but that also looked very solid, and a diamond was the perfect object for this, so we took that direction. By the way, I would like to congratulate Sandra Dubosq who create the whole design. Often imitated but never equaled.
Why did you choose to release only vinyl and what is your opinion around the hype of a new vinyl era? Who is a typical customer of Concrete Music?
I initially preferred to release only vinyl because I don’t like the idea that people can buy some tracks of an Ep separately. For me, an EP is a full object with several tracks telling a story + a visual etc… Actually having someone just buying the banger track just piss me off. After a lot of discussions with people I realized that with vinyl you just share your music with DJs or at least people having a turntable, and I don’t like that idea neither. Music is supposed to be shared with everyone, so at the end, I’m really thinking about doing some digitals releases too in the next months, but we will continue to defend the vinyl format as it’s a base of the house music and the DJ culture.
From the A&R side, what are you looking for when you’re signing producers and tracks to the label?
Concrete Music is not my own label but the label of our club. I have to release not only music that I like personally but music that reflects all our musical values and tastes. We are not seeking for big bangers or looking to be on the top of the charts. We just want to release the kind of music you could simply hear in our club at any time of the day, and more than everything, music that have been done with soul and passion. The other thing is that for future releases I want to focus mainly on French artists. I can work with artists from other countries sometimes, but there will always be a French artist involved in the record. I want Concrete music to become a kind of musical platform for the French scene and helps artists to get visibility.
What is the best way for a producer to approach Concrete Music? Do you accept demo submissions or do you prefer to work with well-known artists/friends that can suggest you some new one?
People who want to find my contact to send me demos can find it, I suppose. But I prefer to warn them now that I am not just taking care of the label. I am also doing all the bookings for Concrete and Weather festival, and I probably booked between 1200 and 1500 artists last year, so sometimes I can be a bit slow to answer. But good music always finds me at the end![/tab]
