[tab title=”Italiano”]Con “The Night Is Young“, i 2 Bears sono riusciti in un’impresa non semplice, ovvero quella di produrre un disco che suoni moderno e classico già al primo ascolto. Un disco che si pone sia nel solco tracciato dalla tradizione anglosassone della scena dance dei primi anni ’90, vicino a nomi quali Orb, M-People, Morcheeba, sia all’interno della nuova scena locale, su tutti Kele, Kindness e Jungle. Abbiamo incontrato Joe Goddard poco dopo il colorato concerto londinese della band al The Dome di Tufnell Park.
Il tuo nuovo disco “The Night Is Young”, uscito a nome The 2 Bears insieme a Raf Rundell, suona assolutamente londinese: ovvero rappresenta bene quel mix di influenze derivanti dal multiculturalismo della capitale inglese. Che ne pensi, ti trovi d’accordo con questa definizione?
Sì concordo, hai ragione. Il disco rispecchia assolutamente questo concetto del melting pot londinese, cosa che amiamo e cosa che volevamo rappresentare in quanto 2 Bears. Ma su tutto, direi che il disco riflette semplicemente i nostri gusti musicali.
In che modo dunque Londra vi ha influenzati? Pensi che avreste fatto altra musica se foste cresciuti altrove?
Mmmh, è abbastanza difficile rispondere alla seconda parte della domanda, sono però sicuro che Londra abbia formato parecchio la nostra musica – anche perché sia io che Raf siamo in giro da più di vent’anni. Tutt’ora comunque la città continua ad ispirarci enormemente.
Dite che esiste una scena in città? C’è qualcosa a Londra che non esiste dalle altre parti? È quel meltin pot di cui parlavamo prima?
Esiste una scena, sì certo. Penso che Londra storicamente abbia prodotto una scena da sempre e che continui oggi a produrre musica interessante, soprattutto nella scena dance underground. Una scena frammentata che forse è il punto di riferimento globale quando si parla di musica dance…
Immagino che a Berlino non siano troppo d’accordo… ok, torniamo a voi: chi o cosa sono i 2 Bears?
Non esiste una specifica identità per quanto riguarda i 2 Bears: la musica che suoniamo rappresenta il nostro gusto come dj – è l’espressione di ciò che amiamo della scena musicale intorno a noi; ecco, direi che questo sono i 2 Bears.
House, pop, soul, 2 step, disco, rap e reggae, sono solo alcuni dei generi musicali che riuscite ad amalgamare nella vostra musica. Come riuscite a farlo così bene?
Sai che non ne ho mica idea come riesca a funzionare a volte? Lol. A parte gli scherzi, credo che un certo suono ‘comune’ in termini di produzione aiuti a creare un’amalgama in grado di unire i diversi stili musicali tra di loro.
Veniamo alla stesura dei brani, come li scrivete? Ho letto che The Night is Young è stato registrato a Cape Town, come mai?
Iniziamo a scrivere i brani partendo da campionamenti, da accordi o da un ritmo, e in base a quello sviluppiamo le nostre idee insieme o separati, dipende dai casi. Sì, abbiamo registrato un paio di tracce tra Cape Town e Johannesburg perchè invitati in loco dalla rivista Live e dal British Council a lavorare con gli artisti locali.
Nel disco, nel video del primo singolo “Not This Time” e dal vivo, ricorre parecchio il nome del collettivo londinese Sink The Pink. Potreste descriverlo brevemente per chi non lo conoscesse?
Sink The Pink è una serata gay incredibilmente creativa ed artistica organizzata da un collettivo di artisti, ballerini, cantanti e designer, che Raf (il cantante dei 2 Bears) ha conosciuto e con i quali abbiamo iniziato a collaborare durante i nostri concerti e successivamente nel video di “Not This Time”. La festa viene organizzata una volta al mese presso il super alternativo Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club.
Dal vivo qui a Londra, alcuni membri del collettivo vi hanno raggiunto sul palco. Come funzionano i vostri concerti?
Si, sul palco siamo io e Raf ai synth e alla chitarra (occasionalmente) e alla voce. Mentre Tom Hopkins – già collaboratore degli Hot Chip e dei New Build, suona il synth e la drum machine, mentre Adelaide Mackenzie canta dal vivo con noi. Spetta ai ragazzi di Sink The Pink fare animazione durante lo spettacolo.
Sia come remixer che come remixati siete sempre molto attivi. Che nomi avete in cantiere per i nuovi brani di “The Night Is Young”?
Ce ne sono un paio pronti già usciti, uno di Henrik Schwarz di “Angel” ed uno ad opera di Seahawks per “Mary Mary”. Per quel che mi riguarda mi piacerebbe che Dennis Ferrer mettesse le mani su di un nostro pezzi e vorrei remixare Earl Sweatshirt.
Infine, una domanda che non potevamo non porti: hai indiscrezioni sul nuovo disco degli Hot Chip?
Sì, uscirà quest’anno per la Domino Records, e per ora suona che è una meraviglia… sono molto felice a riguardo![/tab]
[tab title=”English”]With “The Night Is Young“, The 2 Bears managed to produce an incredible record that mixes the sound of the early ’90s in UK, with the likes of M People, Morcheeba and Orb, with the new current sound of the Capital – names like Kele, Kindness and Jungle. We met one of the two bears, Joe Goddard, after the gigs at The Dome of Tufnell Park, for a brief chat about their new record “The Night Is Young”.
How would you describe your new amazing album? I have to say it sounds absolutely a spot for London, thanks to its mix of genres reflecting the multiculturalism of the British capital. Do you agree or don’t? If so, why?
It definitely reflects the multicultural nature of London- that is something that we love a lot and we wanted to represent that. Above that it is simply a reflection of the different kinds of music that we appreciate.
In which way London is related to your artistic background? Do you think your music would have sounded differently if you would have born somewhere else?
Thats difficult to answer, but I think that London has informed our music a lot as we have both been regularly going out to hear music in London for the last 20 years – London inspires us massively.
What do you think about the current london music scene? What makes it good and what makes it bad?
I think London is always producing interesting stuff, particularly in the more underground, fractured dance music genres – it kind of leads the world in some ways when it comes to forward thinking dance music.
Mmmh, not sure in Berliners would agree with your statements… Anyway, let’s move to you guys: who or what are the 2 bears?
There is no coherent identity for the 2 Bears really – the music just represents our taste as DJs – its an expression of what we love in the musical world around us.
House, Pop, Reggae, Disco, Rap, Deep and several others style: how can you mix so many different genres and make it work perfectly?
Sometimes I don’t know if it all works perfectly! I think a common ‘sound’ in terms of production helps to link the different musical styles together.
How do you guys write your songs? I read that your latest record has been recorded in cape town, why this choice?
We write by starting with samples, chords or drums and developing the ideas together or apart – we worked on a couple of the songs in Cape Town and Johannesburg because we were asked to go out there by Live magazine and the British Council to work with local artists.
Can you tell us a bit more about the collective called Sink The Pink? Collective that is involved in the video of your first single and on stage during your gigs.
Sink The Pink is an amazingly creative gay night which features a gang of performers, dancers, singers, designers- Raf became friends with Glyn and Amy from Sink The Pink and we decided to join forces on the 2 Bears live show.
Could you please tell us how your live show works? Are there other people onstage?
Yes, on stage with us is Tom Hopkins who works with Hot Chip and New Build, he plays synths and drum machines with us and Adelaide Mackenzie sings live with us. The crew from Sink The Pink is onstage with us for the visual effects.
What about remixes? Are new remixes coming out? Is there anyone in particular you d love to be remixed or remixing?
There is a Henrik Schwarz remix about to be released, and a great Seahawks mix of ‘Mary Mary’ coming. I would love to be remixed by Dennis Ferrer and I’d love to remix Earl Sweatshirt.
Finally, are there any news about Hot Chip’s new record?
It will be out next year on Domino Records and it is sounding good at the moment! Very excited about it![/tab]
